At certain times of the day I would say in reguards to JJJ - Lunch and Midnight to Dawn - have a bit of lee-way don't they? I guess they have a certain percentage of songs that are play listed with a small percentage up to the descretion of the DJ/set aside for requests etc. Actually I think internet radio can make it a bit bigger - I met a friend from school the other week and he has his own radio show - i.e. him playing mp3's requested by him. + mucking around etc. It's quite hilarious. Basically he just runs it over winamp and spams the irc chat channels he's always in that his show is starting and people can tune in and request stuff - he's put up a web-page of his song lists. It's very informal - but It's NOT too BAD!! LOL! It's very silly - but I didn't mind listening to it for a while. I didn't like all the songs but I did request Bjork and PJ Harvey doing a duet of "Can't get no satisfaction"! heheh - I hadn't heard it before. The quality isn't too bad either. They needed something for Sam, Frodo and Gollum to react to/endager them along the way - Shelob - but that would leave nothing for RotK - except a firey trip through Mordor. They needed to show Faramir. It tempts the Kings and Queens of Elves and Men, why should Faramir be so immune - just because he is noble. What he did was very much in the character of Faramir - in that he has lived under the shadow of his Brother and his is always trying to get in his father's graces. Threatening Frodo and Sam's mission - not by just a beast but by having them removed from that mission gives a direction to their part of the movie, instead of them just stumbling along through Ithilen with no 'shape' to their story in the movie. (Frankly - The parts with Frodo and Sam in the BOOK were the most difficult to push through when I read it. I just wanted it to go back to the others. and stopped reading it for quite a while). But I'll argue that we are not seeing the range of music that we once did. This is certainly true for US radio, and it's true for the albums that get released. And then let's look at touring. In the US, far fewer people are attending concerts, but more money is being made. The Stones got US$200 per seat. I couldn't afford to go to see Peter Gabriel -- one seat was US$131. Bruce Springsteen was lauded for his low ticket prices -- he charged a mere US$75 per seat. Compare that to the US$18.50 (including TicketMaster fees!) I paid to see Tori in 1994. Sorry, but you can't convince me that expenses have increased -that- much between 1994 and 2002. It all comes down to less music available to fewer people. Record companies are releasing fewer albums by fewer artists. Radio stations play less new music, and their playlists are highly repetitive. Tours visit fewer places, and are damned expensive. > I think the thought behind it was.. maybe at one point > record companies could 'rig' the charts by releasing > 10 different formats of every release - eg. some > Garbage singles in the UK had 3 different CD's... then > others have 12", 7", cassette, poster-pack, > whatever-stupid-freebie-they-can-think-of-to-help-sell-it > pack... etc. Yeah, but it never particularly worked. Even in the UK, where singles are way more popular than pretty much anywhere else in the world, multiple releases for one song (a regular CD single, a limited-edition CD single, maybe a cassingle or a vinyl) didn't translate to measurable gains in the charts. So why bother to bitch about it when it doesn't make a difference? Oh, right, 'cause it's the record industry and they're all flaming morons. Sorry, I forgot for a bit there. > To throw in Tori content - then you get the likes of > Tori who chastises her over-eager fans for downloading > songs early & thinks she can miracurously stop > downloading by glueing CD players shut (admittedly it > seemed to work OK) & enticing ppl to buy the original > thing with stupid gimmicks like 'trinkets' and a > web-site which from all reports sounds so shit I've > not even bothered to look at it almost 2 months after > I got the CD :) As far as I can tell, Tori is a control freak. I can understand that, to a point -- after all, there are some -amazingly- bad bootlegs and pirates out there. And I can understand the argument that the album is a whole package, with the songs and the liner notes and all the rest. But that has buggerall to do with the promotional release of the album. Her little glued-CD player trick may have meant that her techno-savvy fans couldn't download the tracks early, but it also meant that she couldn't get that much press in advance 'cause essentially no-one got to hear the whole album. Go back and look at the SW reviews: almost all of 'em are based on the six-song sampler. Paranoia about the album falling into fans' hands early meant that it didn't get into anyone's hands before the commercial release. What good does that do? Y'know, I never intended to get into my generic rant about the music business here. ;) /nm ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 27 Dec 2002 09:06:05 +1100 From: "Rachael" Subject: [oztori] Bye hello, we're off to albury for a few days, then back to Manchester on monday, so i probably wont have net access til i get back to work the monday after (though i *am* taking my computer back with me, this time!!) so please dont post too many messages while im away! lots of love, rachael xxxx ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 27 Dec 2002 09:57:38 +1100 From: "Dylan Plant" Subject: Re: [oztori] Two Towers - if u haven't read the books, don't read this email. OK, the bit with Faramir - that's the way it was written!!!! Its part of the theme of the book - good/noble can overcome evil - Faramir was very tempted by the Ring and says so, but realizes that he can't control it. Its not nobility its common bloody sense!!!! And I will say that the ending of the Two Towers the book was a much stronger ending than the movie - but I still enjoyed it, and I will most certainly be seeing it again!!! One of the things I liked about the movie was the intercutting between the various plot threads - it works much better than the books did (given it was one plot thread then switch to another etc.) Although I am wondering just how Merry and Pippin get to Gondor and become a member of the Gondor Guard or whatever its called! (its been a while since I've read the books) So nyah! LOL I did really like the movie...just a couple of (valid IMNSHO) criticisms that's all. Anyway, that's all folks! POSSIBLE SPOILERS HERE 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 I hadn't read the books for a year, so my memory as to what belongs where may be a bit hazy - so please correct me if I get it mixed up! But I'm glad they left the reunion between Pippin, Merry, Gandalf et al. in Isengard for the next film. It will make a nice entrance I think. Unless, of course, they've chopped it out. But I don't see how they can. No worries about the whole Osgiliath/lack of Shelob thing. The Ents (while visually slightly disappointing) were great. As much as its my favourite part of the book, it is long winded and I think the film captured the essence of the Ents perfectly. Being broken up with the alternate storylines is brilliant. I think having to watch the entire Helms Deep battle in one go would have been too much. Yay Elves! Gollum rules. He is so cool. Overall - better than the first. The first is a better book (the second falls down through splitting the Frodo narrative into its own book) but the second is a way way better film. Epic is a perfect word to describe everything in it. xoxo Dan ===== I want a table - no, just for one. But I know you do! I can see some from here! Okay, then say for two...no, there's only one. And what Jackson/Boyens is saying - and changing I guess is the emphasis on Faramir's nobility/power against the ring. I mean Galadriel and Gandalf were tempted to take the ring. And we find out that Faramir is Boromir's brother who nearly got the ring and claimed it for himself - What would you think if you were Frodo - or Sam? Faramir's decision was aided in Sam's passionate speech to Frodo. I mean - that's all he had to go on - Boromir saw first hand what the ring was doing to people - and he still thought he could control it - who has more common sense there!?! :) >And I will say that the ending of the Two Towers the book was a much >stronger ending than the movie - but I still enjoyed it, and I will most >certainly be seeing it again!!! >One of the things I liked about the movie was the intercutting between the >various plot threads - it works much better than the books did (given it was >one plot thread then switch to another etc.) >Although I am wondering just how Merry and Pippin get to Gondor and become a >member of the Gondor Guard or whatever its called! I hear it first - or as in the case with Tori - if I wasn't on the net I'd rely on seeing advertisements like posters in music stores. I only ever saw one - in one shop. (little story about that too). So many people I'd heard of not even knowing there was a new Tori album out - - and they were fans. ------------------------------ End of oztori-digest V2 #386 ****************************
