It's only been out nearly 1 1/2 months. - --------------- The Advertiser Edition 1 - STATETHU 12 DEC 2002, Page 063 By Ben McEachen TORI AMOS Scarlet's Walk (Sony) Apart from sounding like Kate Bush, Tori Amos always sounds so, well, Tori Amos. While her floating choral cries rise above rock-pomp piano playing in gifted ways, it can be difficult to remember an Amos tune. Her seventh album, Scarlet's Walk, often suffers from this exasperating lack of distinction. Amos isn't about catchcries, but her 18-song tapestry of the US post-September 11 is hindered by its own insoluble weaving. As the walking Scarlet, Amos wanders the States to be inspired by American Indians, porn stars (Amber Waves, a cool Boogie Nights extension), shattered romance in Las Vegas, innocence lost and cagy hope. Uplifting Your Cloud, croaky Pancake and plaintive I Can't See New York are Amos escaping the opulent similarity of this grand work. These moments of clarity breathe air into a cohesive, sometimes oppressive ``sonic novel'' of rich detail. * * * Illus: Photo: cover of cd 'scarlet's walk' BIOG: AMOS TORI Column: guide new music music Section: FEATURES Type: Record Review ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Dec 2002 12:45:31 +1000 From: "Holly Williamson" Subject: Re: [oztori] What the hey.... But it's all good now. No, am longer at the Sunshine Coast, I'm now at Rockhampton in Central Qld, moved here about 6 weeks ago for a promotion... so far it's hot and kind of annoying, but going ok. Course I remember Nayth!! :-) xx hol _________________________________________________________________ Protect your PC - get McAfee.com VirusScan Online http://clinic.mcafee.com/clinic/ibuy/campaign.asp?cid=3963 ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Dec 2002 12:53:24 +1000 From: "Holly Williamson" Subject: RE: [oztori] What the hey.... Yay! You do remember!! And Bindy, yep, this is *that* holly, and not Holly Valance. Cuz I gotta keep ya down boy. I would really love to come to a Brisbane meet, but now that I live further up north instead of just on the Sunshine Coast, it's a little difficult. It's a 7 hour drive to get down there now... But I wish I could! How many BrisVegas or Queensland toriphiles do we have on here now? xx hols _________________________________________________________________ The new MSN 8: advanced junk mail protection and 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/junkmail ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Dec 2002 13:00:58 +1000 From: "Holly Williamson" Subject: Re: [oztori] SW review today in The Advertiser The review in the Advertiser: Let me start by saying: DUMB DUMB DUMB. Although, they DID give it three stars which is better than 2.5 or less. >Apart from sounding like Kate Bush, Tori Amos always sounds so, well, Tori >Amos. Wowser. There's a new observation from an obviously unmusically orientated (or country-music loving) reviewer. Grr. Kate Bush?!? She doesn't! Kate has her own distinctive sound, as does tori. Hm. And funny that Tori Amos always sounds so... Tori Amos. That's a surprise. >it can be difficult to remember an Amos tune. Uh-huh. That's why it's almost impossible to get Sweet Sangria out of my head at the moment. Because it's difficult to remember an Amos tune. >Her seventh album, Scarlet's Walk, often suffers from this exasperating >lack >of distinction. YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!!! Lack of distinction?!? Huh??? OK, that'll do with all the obvious comebacks to that silly, stupid review. Ah well, everyone's entitled to their opinion. ;-) hols. _________________________________________________________________ STOP MORE SPAM with the new MSN 8 and get 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/junkmail ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Dec 2002 14:53:57 +1000 From: "Holly Williamson" Subject: Re: [oztori] SW review today in The Advertiser Jas Said: >she's back and running rampant mailing to the list. > >hi hols! > >Jas Hey Jas!!! Yeah but occasionally the 2 do intertwine - vocally when Tori's in her upper register (well when she could still hit her upper register: see pre-1996 :P). > Ah well, everyone's entitled to their opinion.
