I went and did the shopping today - but before hand I went to HMV and bought 2 DVDs as part of a '2 under $50' deal. So I have had my eye on the X-men movie and B5's In the Beginning/The Gathering (redone version) for ages - we only JUST got a DVD player. So I had to be home by 2:30 and the silly bitch at the checkout took FOREVER. So I rushed through the packed shopping centre and down to the car - - where I basically threw the groceries into the boot. Put the Trolley next to a piller and got in and rushed home (for a delivery - which of course was late). I got home and straight away I went Oh NO! The DVDs!! They were hanging on the bar on the kid's seat on the trolley. I had forgotten to put the HMV bag into the car. FUCK! I rang the shopping centre - they rang back said noone from trolley pick-up, customer service or security had had them handed in or picked up. BUGGER As soon as the delivery arrived I raced back over - got exactly the same spot (believe it or not) and went searching (in vain) for the bag with the DVDs. No were to be found - I re-asked the trolley collection and several stores near where I parked. Nothing. Nada. Zip. Ziltch. FUCK! Complete bastards. Where is the Christmas spirit? How hard is it to hand stuff in - would they feel guilty? What if (and it most probably could be) Christmas presents!?! Urrgh! The thing that gets me is - noone LIKEs Babylon 5, noone WATCHES Babylon 5 - noone would know what it was and not a great deal of people would have DVD players to watch them on. GAH! So that's $50 down the plug-hole. I might as well have put the cash in the middle of the carpark and drove away. (THAT would probably have been handed in) GRR. Oh well. Well I know that this is probably a world away from most of you on the list, but I'm writing to talk about the bushfires that struck mid last week .. Well I'm exhausted! To say the least... My parent's place was lucky that we were there to defend it. The house is on a 5acre bush block in a valley between berowra HTS and berowra waters. 2 separate large bushfires came roaring up last week (starting from wed night going right through to the weekend). No fire fighters could come down to help us fend off the fire as there was only one access road as an escape route so it was too dangerous. So it was just us and the Elvis' (heli-tankers) left to defend the house. The whole valley is burnt out, and our neighbour's (thankfully unoccupied) house got burnt to the ground. I got dumped on by Elvis!! I was fighting off one fire front and it felt like a swimming pool had been dropped on top of me, followed by an immense amount of smoke ofcourse. I managed to escape with a few cuts and bruises, and only one small burn from a stray ember... and that pretty much went for everyone there. Friday was non-stop fire fighting all day as the main blaze roared through, then up until monday we were on patrol to put out lots of spot fires caused by embers blowing onto unburnt bush. So all in all an exhausting 5 or so days. All aching and mentally exhausted too, but the house is safe, especially after some rain we got on tuesday :) Though it is sunny again.. and summer hasn't even really hit us yet! too hot and dry.. If anyone is interested I have a few after-shot photos of the blackness and a bit of video.. Just thought I'd let you guys know. thanks for reading. Rala ;oD http://greetings.yahoo.com.au - Yahoo! Hey Rala, I can sympathise with what you went through. We lived in the Adelaide Hill during 1983's Black Wednesday bush-fires. :( HORRIBLE. I mean I was like - 3 or 4 - but you don't forget these things. I remember the smoke and the sky being red, and the sirens!! The sirens were non stop - and helping to hose down the house. When the water got cut off we had to start emptying the pool. Gooahaaahhh I can STILL remember it. The fires were racing down fern-tree gully right near us when it started to rain towards the evening. *getting all prickly here*. I remember the bush afterwards EVERYTHING was black. I remember going to kindegarten the next day or a few days later and it was spared - but everywhere around it was blacksoot. SCAREY And we had 2 years ago here in Brisbane, there is a lot of bush up behind us. The Chermside Hills Reserve - threatend all the homes near us. It happened so quickly. It was totally burnt out. The embers are the worst all around our place there were scorch marks where they had started little fires. The fire ripped down and right near all the houses that boarder the bushland across the road. All their fences were burning and luckily the Fire Brigade turned up. The embers though were being blown across to the houses on the other side and the guy who lives next door is a painter and all his drop mats in the roof of their garage which is like 2 meters from our house caught on fire!! My brother was up hosing our roof. Luckily again the Fire Brigade arrived. I was at the house on the other side of us which was being built - was just a timber frame - but the scarey thing was there was PAINT and large buckets of sawdust sitting EVERYWHERE and with the embers in sawdust - would have been like a mini-fireball - luckily nothing happened there. Still scarey. It's amazing how fast the trees and plants grew back though! You should do a few shots with your camera over time! So the fires this week must have been hell for you and I sympathise - and lucky for Elvis and his friends!! :) Did the water hurt!?! Even if it did I'm sure you wouldn't have cared! :) And aside: What really cheeses me off is the lack of controlled burning off!! Greenies go nutso about it happening - but that shows you how they know fuck-all about 'nature'. Learnt first week in Ecology 107 at Uni that this country has been slowly altered over the last several thousand years by the Aborigines. They burnt tracts of land for food - it flush out animals. The how country's flora changed as a result of this - the key example the Eucalyptus which needs fire to allow it to regerminate and continue the next cycle. When this is stopped you get a complete and utter build up of fuel. No 'patchwork' burning off is occuring anymore so the hazard grows and grows and grows until on spark can destroy thousands and thousands and thousands of hectares of bushland. Those animals that once would have been able to move to a near-by untouched piece of bush - now have nowhere to run to - cause everything is burning and the intensity of the fires is so much that it basically just overtakes them and burns them to a crisp. Controlled burning needs to return and needs to be done continually to stop the build up of large amounts of hazardous fuel. Greenies and that who appose it have no idea what they are talking about - Australia isn't Europe. They should learn simple history, biology, ecology and common sense.
