Okay, I'm gonna go through this song by song, album by album. I'm starting with From the Choirgirl Hotel. 1. Spark: 11 June 1998 (Hamburg, "Hamburg Swirl"). Flawless. You can actually hear her heart breaking. Very close runner up: 1998 Frankfurt Radio performance. 2. Cruel: her performance from 30 April 1998 (Chicago, IL). It's a really powerful performance, and her loud wailing thing (where it sounds like she's speaking in tongues) is just perfect. For me, that part is the litmus-test for Cruel. Speaking of Cruel, the TVAB live CD performance is easily her worst performance of that song I've ever heard. 3. Black-Dove (January): the Later with Jools Holland performance. I love the bit where she lets out a really loud, ferocious "said" to cover the fact that she has just dumped a bucket-load of drool over the Bosie. There are plenty of nice Black-Doves out there though ... 4. Raspberry Swirl: the 1998 Frankfurt Radio performance. Honorable mention goes to the 1998 Pinkpop performance. That performance made me love the Swirl Girl. 5. Jackie's Strength: 29 November 1998 (Columbus, OH). Tori does this wonderful echo thing with her voice that just works perfectly. And the ending is very touching, as her voice soars. 6. i i e e e: so many good performances of i i e e e, and no perfect ones. Believe me, I've looked. And looked. And looked. The Sessions at West 54th is probably the only technically flawless performance, but it still lacks a certain something. The 1998 Frakfurt Radio performance has that "something", but it's not flawless (missing a really good whyyyyyyyyyyyyiiiiiiiiiiieeeeeeeeeeeeee, but she recovers well). 7. Liquid Diamonds: 29 November 1998 (Columbus, OH). Hands down. The improv at the end in incredible. I wish she would add it to the end *every* time. 8. She's Your Cocaine: the 28 November 1998 (Akron, OH) performance is very fun (her voice is all electronic, and she's very catty), but I think I'll give it to her 1998 Frankfurt Radio performance (definitely in the running for best Torgasm ever -- you WILL need a cigarette after). 9. Northern Lad: I dunno. I *love* the studio version (I'm prolly the only one who *does*), but I don't think she's ever been able to top it. She's done quite a number of *good* performances, but no *great* ones. So I'll just list the three best quality recordings where the performances are decent: 28 April 1998 (Toronto, ONT); 28 July 1998 (Ames, IA); and 13 Octobr 2001 (Philadelphia, PA). 10. Hotel: I quite like the 7 November 2002 (Tampa FL) version. Go get it from hereinmyhead.com *now*. Otherwise I'd go for the PPV performance, but there's only so many times I can hear about the "beautiful Mr Chris". 11. Playboy Mommy: I quite like the performance of 21 July 1998 (Cincinnati, OH). 12. Pandora's Aquarium: It's pretty damn hard to beat 29 October 1999 (London), but she's come close on occasion. Still, she hasn't topped that one. Yet. So there. The best performances from the best album from the best artist ever. :-) J - --------------------------------- Yahoo! I wuv this one. The new one on www.hereinmyhead.com/sounds/index.html is bewwy nice also. * Father Lucifer/Tubular Bells/Smalltown Boy from the 25/3/96 Berlin show. * Smells Like Teen Spirit - the very 'dark' sounding piano bit she does between the first "hello, hello" and "I'm worse at what I do best". Although I feel she's ever so slightly 'watered it down' a little in recent times - so I pick a '92-'96 version. * Landslide live from Y100 Sonic Sessions - yes, a clear recording that is devoid of annoying audience cheering/coughing/chatter. * Lovesong/Running Up That Hill live on the harpsichord - have a reasonably clear mp3 of this from April '96 & also some very murky-sounding ones. * River - new 2002 version is very nice. * Live To Tell 22/8/96 - might be here if a clear recording of it existed :( * I'm On Fire - 2001 version * Purple Rain - piano version [wow, notice they're (nearly) all covers so far?] Of Tori's actual stuff: Guess maybe Mother, Horses (solo), Cool On Your Island (harmonium '96 version), Precious Things (lol typed 'Previous Things' at first.. solo or 'plugged'), Concertina solo piano, et al... As I understand it, the SW lyrics were transcribed by Daniel Nolan from the SW lyric booklet (is that correct, Dan?), so are as official as we're ever likely to get. OPP is guesswork, but I concur with what's there. One "official" lyric I *do* diagree with, though, is in Don't Make Me Cum. The lyric sheet says: they called him the prince Prince of Black Jacks and of women and of anything that's slipped into his hands but I *swear* she sings "slipped into his legs", which is a much funnier (and more fitting!) lyric. Jeff from the Cockroaches used to visit our old next door neighbours (These are the old neighbours from our old house - not our old neighbours at this house who did shady deals in the Middle East and once Ran a Brisbane Strip Club!) all the time - like their family would drive up from NSW on holidays. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 21 Nov 2002 00:06:21 +1000 From: "AndrewR" Subject: [oztori] Immediate first thoughts As I listen to each track. Is the legend to anyone else's map blurry? Amber Waves: Nice ASF: Fucking awesome Wednesday: Kooky Strange: Nice-but has a lazy SLG quality to it - even though it's infinitely better. Carbon: Ohhhh nice opening! Tori leave the drums - you don't need them on every fucking track. OK snare ok - tom-toms NO. Crazy: nutty instrumentation - what is that muffled synth noise? Play the fucking Bose Tori!! Nice song. WP: beautiful! DMMCTV: more tom-toms. but they sorta fit here. Is that rhythm a beguine!?! Like it! Sweet Sangria: Groovy - literally! :-) Nice chorus. Your Cloud - Lounge Bar! :-) Lovely chorus. Love that little backing vocal bit. Pancake - starts growly and great! There is an underlying piano riff there that sounds like something from Choirgirl - BD(J) maybe? Or end of Hotel I think. where it pulls up at the end (of Hotel) ICSNY (got a bit of Kate Bush there - that song about the nuclear weapon from the best of) AMAZING! WOW! A new favourite? Mrs. Jesus. OMG OMG OMG OMG!!!! OLD TORI She's come home! *swoon* Mix it a lil differently - more strings lil less on the vocals. Her voice is a bit more gravelly now-a-days? No? GREAT SONG! Taxi Ride! WOO! Funk-ay! This is where the band works (but not on every friggin track! :-)) Has a bit of a Choirgirl feel? But Better? :-) Love this song! Love it! AGP: NICE!! Nice start. Cool! Like it - has a tiny SLG element in the chord progression?/key? Jasmine Fucks me in her WHAT!?! :-) Like the chorus!! It would be awesome if this track was really heavy - i.e. Tori more angry or something?? Not more band. Oohhh didn't know there was an actual track "Scarlet's Walk". Eerie start! Doesn't need that bass at the start. Cool song! Who is the guitarist - better and less annoying than Caton. (Caton wasn't bad early on but I think from Choirgirl on wards he just wasn't working) OOHOHOHOH! VIRGINIA!! LOVE THE START SO FAR! AWESOME! Loved it! GOLDDUST OPENING - CHOKE- BRILLIANT - CRY!! OMG STRINGS!! STRINGSSSSSSSSSSSS MY PRECIOUSSSSSSSS!! OMG THIS IS OLD TORI! *cry* LOVE IT!! *screams* WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! She still has the touch people! *cries* THIS track takes the cake. That was beautiful The album was GREAT! I *need* some cake! :-) Andrew ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 21 Nov 2002 00:08:01 +1000 From: "AndrewR" Subject: RE: [oztori] Melbourne Meat Up >we arrive in Melbourne on the 3rd of December My birthday. Yeah, that was the only other thing I could think of when I read that original post: 'Tyoozday'. But mm, I tried it out a few times and just couldn't say it without laughing at myself. >There is no 'g' pronounced in 'ng' anyway. Just uses 'g' b/c it's like an 'n' >produced in the mouth where 'g' normally is. Did I say "pronounced in there", you anal bastard? No! I was looking at the *spelling* of "onion". If there'd been a "g" in there, it'd've been pronounced the way my brother and I were saying it, but there was not. But thanks for the trivia. :-P~ ~Becc :-) - -- www.crappism.org ------------------------------ End of oztori-digest V2 #347 ****************************
