It's been a while since I read AG, but I really do think that Tori is *hugely* indebted to Neil for SW, and that AG and SW work very well together as companion pieces. Obviously Tori-Neil interrelation time: In AG's acknowledgments section we have this: "Mrs Hawley lent me her Florida house to write in, and all I had to do in return was scare away the vultures. She lent me her Irish house to finish it in, and cautioned me not to scare away the ghosts. Many thanks to her and Mr Hawley for all their kindness and generosity." In SW we have the song "Wednesday" (named after the AG character "Mr Wednesday"), originally titled "American God". The song is about a man who keeps secrets (as Mr Wednesday does to Shadow in two significant respects), and both deal with the mythology of America. In fact, both AG and SW are structured as journeys across and through America, celebrating and exploring it's history/mythology/physical + psychic landscape/"soul", from the point of view of a cypher-like character (Scarlet, Shadow), in an attempt to examine (and critique) what it means to be an American now ... and in the wider sense, what it means to be a person now. While AG is far from Neil's best work (I doubt if Neil will ever top Sandman, which is leagues above anything else he has written, and may be one of the best things written in the past 20 or so years -- certainly the most underrated) it is still a worthy read and pretty much a "must read" companion piece to SW. For those getting into Neil, it is his most approachable and coherent work ... he has certainly tried to find an "American" voice for this novel, which may be more accessible (but, sadly, it comes at the expensive of his wonderful and very charming "quaint Englishman" voice of previous work). Other Neil references include "Snow Glass Apples" (referenced in Carbon), a short story that finds its place in the excellent Smoke and Mirrors collection (which also contains the brilliant short story "Murder Mysteries" in which a young Lucifer Morningstar must play detective and solve the very first murder -- of an angel in heaven). "Snow Glass Apples" can also be read online here: http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/Lofts/6656/snow.html. And, of course, the reference to Desire in Another Girl's Paradise -- Desire being Morpheus (the Sandman)'s younger brother/sister from the Sandman series. That's about it without major spoilers, and off the top of my head. Sorry that the above was light on the analysis ... am suffering through a headache that will not take the hint and leave. Hope that was helpful. Enjoy AG! :-) Jules - --------------------------------- Yahoo! Hint Dropper - - Avoid getting hideous gifts this Christmas with Yahoo! Don't tell me you've already forgotten how much I love Neil Gaiman's work? Oh Roozi... *sobs* ;) (That being said, Roozi, if you do come across more extra-cheap copies of American Gods let me know cos I'd love to buy one off you. And have you read that article I sent you yet... *grin*) Jules then responded thus: "While AG is far from Neil's best work (I doubt if Neil will ever top Sandman, which is leagues above anything else he has written, and may be one of the best things written in the past 20 or so years -- certainly the most underrated) it is still a worthy read and pretty much a "must read" companion piece to SW." I disagree with the "far from" here. I actually found it a very powerful work, far better than his other non-graphic-novel work (Good Omens, Smoke & Mirrors, Neverwhere)... which is not to say the rest wasn't also amazing. Gaiman has this ability to be able to create completely believable characters of all descriptions (including non- human, like Matthew the raven) which extends far beyond his chosen genre of fantasy/graphic novel. Jules then continued: "For those getting into Neil, it is his most approachable and coherent work ... he has certainly tried to find an "American" voice for this novel, which may be more accessible (but, sadly, it comes at the expensive of his wonderful and very charming "quaint Englishman" voice of previous work)." Oh, do you have to use that cringeworthy word "quaint"?? There's nothing quaint or affected about it, he's just writing in his own voice/accent/dialect (and even in the Sandman that's scarce since a lot of his characters are not English). I don't know if you've read the "Books of Magic", but you sound like the American that John Constantine bumps into in the US ("Oh, you're *British*?? Sye, mite, owse about a point of eye-le end a styke end kedney pood?") And while we're on the subject of Gaiman's voice--there are some recordings of him reading his own stuff around on the net (dunno where they are exactly) which are well worth downloading. He is a great reader. Ah, yes, I *did* say something very much like that ... but I don't see how that makes me an SQQ ... Anyway, my official position: I'd much rather something in good quality than in shitty quality. Like, duh. A 64kbps mp3 is fine, but a 128kbps or 192kbps mp3 is definitely superior (and therefore preferable). If you can't tell the difference between a 6kkbps and a 192kbps mp3, you need your hearing checked. Okay? But I'm not one of those people so obsessed that I will burn up all my bandwidth quota downloading 1 shn, when I could get 5 of 6 good quality mp3s for the same. Similarly, I like soundboard recordings better than shitty audience recordings where the mixing is way off, there's crowd noise/hissing, and you can hear people eating potato chips (have you heard the "Clean" bootleg??? ... it sounds like an ad for Pringles!) or blathering on mindlessly (reminds me of one boot, don't remember which, where there is this stupid exchange "can you see?", "yes, can YOU see?", "yes, are you SURE you can see?", "yeah, I CAN see, and YOU can see, so we can BOTH see, right?", "yes, if *I* can see, and YOU can see, then it must be that we BOTH can see!" etc etc (okay, a liiiiiittle exaggerated)). But if *that* makes me a SQQ, then I'll just have to be an SQQ ... Jules (will request Sound Queen/Horses if Tori ever hauls ass to Oz) - --------------------------------- Yahoo! Gaiman is a genius, and even his worst work (and AG is *not* his worst work) is still pretty bloody brilliant ... my one problem was that I found his style a little ... cold. I thought the "Coming to America" sections were truly inspired ... vintage Gaiman ... and I liked the murder mystery element of the main plot, but there were two main problems with AG for me: (i) gone was much of Gaiman's wit and playfulness with language ...I've always felt that Gaiman's characters talk not how people actually talk, but how people *should* talk in an ideal world ... and (ii) once again we had a rather empty protagonist (the "Alice" type character). Morpheus' "emptiness" was masterfully resolved in Sandman, but Neverwhere (which I also *love*) and AG both suffer from protagonists who are never as interesting as the people around them (even if this is, largely, the whole point in both stories). Coraline shows that he's learning ... pity, however, that Coraline ended up being the *only* interesting character. lol. >Oh, do you have to use that cringeworthy word "quaint"?? Sye, mite, >owse about a point of eye-le end a styke end kedney pood?") You really misunderstand me here ... I love Gaiman's "quaintness" ... I don't mean it in a pejorative sense *at all*. What I am getting at is just that Gaiman has a real relish for language and words and wordplay ... and I love that. I should also have you know that my dad and his fam are English (he lives in one of the *quaintest* villages in Northern England) and I am known to speak, on occasion, in a very "quaint" way myself ... So there ;-P As for John "walking English stereotype" Constantine ... I've never really understood the point of this character (even though I have a JC action figure!!). Warren Ellis wrote him as a fairly decent character, and Brian Azzerello had a decent bash, but few writers (and not even Gaiman!) can actually make him as interesting as he should be. :-) Jules - --------------------------------- Yahoo! Lol, if you're loving "Preludes", then you're in for a treat ... it is far and away the weakest of the Sandman volumes ... You must understand that Sandman was pitched to fill a very specific niche in DC Comic's publishing schedule ... it was supposed to be their new "horror" book, and Neil is labouring under quite heavy generic and house style restrictions. What's more, he expected the book to be cancelled by issue 8 (not uncommon in the comic book world, unless your comic is a Batman or X-Men tie-in), so he wasn't really trying to build the tapestry as artfully as he does in later arcs. In the Doll's House, we begin to see Neil find his voice and stretch the limits of the book. By Dream Country he's pretty much flying. Then we get Season of Mists and the woefully underrated A Game of You (co-dedicated to one Tori Amos), and things really hit high gear. If you're not a life-long fan by the the time you get to Brief Lives and Fables & Reflections, then you need some serious help. And World's End is great, the Kindly Ones probably the best of all, and the Wake one of the most poignant endings ever written. Okay, I'm now in a Sandman mood big time. :-) J - --------------------------------- Yahoo! It was in a church in Berkeley, California. It was utterly fantastic. I was there with a friend, and we just curled up in the pew and read along in our copy. I recall that Neil said in his journal afterwards that he wished he had done this reading before he recorded _Coraline_ for the audiobook, since this gave him a chance to learn where he should add emphasis and pause and so on. I hate how Americans say "I'm going to write *insert person*" WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH the little harmless word known as 'to'? *Grammar hysteria end* [demime 0.97c removed an attachment of type application/ms-tnef which had a name of winmail.dat] ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 Nov 2002 15:05:15 +1000 From: "AndrewR" Subject: [oztori] ASF lyrics and OPP lyrics OK, after having played the single about 100 times I decided to look at the lyrics on the web (For ASF). The one's I found were inaccurate so I updated them myself what do you think: The bracketed parts are the backing vocals (I can't make out the backing vocals in the "And I rode along side" bit yet) And incase the lyrics in the album are different - this is what she actually Sings - cause sometimes the printed lyrics are different. A Sorta Fairytale (101 Mix) On my way up north Up on the Ventura, I Put back the hood And I was talking to you, and I Knew then it would be A life long thing, but I didn't Know that we We could break a silver lining And I'm so sad Like a good book I can't put this Day back A sorta fairytale With you A sorta fairytale With you A sorta fairytale With you (Oohha a-ahh) Things he said that day Up on the 101, the girl come undone (Girl come undone) I tried to downplay it, with a bet about us (About us) You said that you'd take it as long as I could (Long as I could) I could not erase it And I'm so sad like a good book I can't put this Day Back A sorta fairytale With you A sorta fairytale With you A sorta fairytale With you (Oohha a-ahh) And I ride along side And I rode along side And then, and then I Rode along side Till you lost me In the open road And I pulled along side Till the honey spread Itself so thin For me to break your bread For me to take your word I had to steal it (Oohha a-ahh) Way up north I took my day All in all was a pretty nice day, an I Put the hood right back where He could taste heaven perfectly (You could taste heaven perfectly) Feel all the sun and breeze Didnt know when we'd be back and I (Didn't know when we'd be back and I) I don't, didn't think we'd end up like (Oohha a-ahh) this And I'm so sad Like a good book I can't put this Day Back A sorta fairytale With you A sorta fairytale With you A sorta fairytale With you (Oohha a-ahh) A sorta fairytale With you I could pick back up Whenever I feel (Oohha a-ahh) A sorta fairytale With you (Oohha a-ahh) A sorta fairytale With you A sorta fairytale With you I could pick back up whenever I feel THEN I did just then Operation Peter Pan. If that's a figure of speech, it's one I've never heard before. Also, referring to a "he" a bit further down makes it sound as though a guy has been referred to previously in this verse, which makes me wonder if my initial mis-heard lyrics were so mis-heard after all: I thought, when first I heard it, that she was singing "Way up north, I took my date". *shrug* ~Becc :) - -- www.crappism.org ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 19 Nov 2002 21:17:13 -0800 (PST) From: Nathan "®" Subject: RE: [oztori] I ain't gonna eat out my heart anymore (ot) AndrewR wrote: > I also LOATHE some Slang words from the last few > years. > > One I'm SURE is from Melbourne "Grouse" ARRGH "Grouse" is hardly from "the last few year" - more like, began circulating in 1986 and has not been heard since 1988. Get with the times, Andrew! > I hate how Americans say "I'm going to write *insert > person*" ...like the lyrics to Bananarama's (wow originally the Supremes') "Nathan Jones" - "you never wrote me, you never called... Nathan Jones you been gone too long". (yeah you know me!)" ;) AndrewR wrote: > And I'm so sad > Like a good book > I can't put this > Day back Tori's enunciation is *so* bad in this part. No. You're about 6 months late. And you made some mistakes in ASF and the official lyrics are available for anyone who has actually *opened* the CD ;) (not to mention the album version also has a whole extra verse). I think she probably wanted to say something like "I spent my day" but that sounds abrasive on the ears in there. So she's opted to use a word that sounds nicer and sacrifices meaning in the process.
