["Will Johncock" Subject: [oztori] Ok, this is a serious post. Um, I nearly forgot to post this - in all the sillyness of Nina's Parsnip! :-) I went around to my brother's this evening and his fiancee's sister works in a Vets. Now this isn't the happiest of stories - but it could end up being a happy story. OK, here goes. Does anyone want a dog, or knows anyone who is looking for a dog. Maybe they've recently lost a dog etc.? The story is that Sally (my brother's Fiancee's sister that works in the Vet) Had these people come in the other day with a puppy. They bought it and now they don't want it. They were going to dump it. Instead they brought it to the vet's. If the Dog doesn't find a home, it'll be killed. FUCKING BASTARDS WHO DO THIS TO ANIMALS NEED TO BE BEATEN. Huh hmm. Anyway - currently Sally has it at home for a lil bit - but her parent's can't look after it all the time. The little dog is a blue heeler but the problem is. he's deaf. I would take him home in a heart-beat - but I still am at home and we don't have the yard - only a small patch of grass and a pool. Not great for a dog like a Blue Heeler or such dogs - working dogs. (((There are fucking arsehole behind us who have a boarder collie. It continually barks at anything. If you close a window it barks etc. it's because its in a small area and Boarder collies are working dogs - but that is another story.))) Anyway. If anyone here who can take this pup, know someone who would take him - ANYTHING and are in the Brisbane Area - shoot off an e-mail. Don't let this poor animal be incinerated at the council pound. If I ever met those people who wanted to dump that dog I would seriously think about exacting out some sort of physical violence on them - ratbags. Ok, this is serious - so if you can help - please let me know. (If you install LAME, it will also make MP3s.) You should use EAC if you actually care about the quality of the WAVs/MP3s that you make from CD, since it avoids the errors usually associated with digital audio extraction. (Errors associated with digital audio extraction are also why you should NEVER EVER burn a CD on-the-fly.) It's also had CD burning capabilities added to it, but since I've only recently acquired a computer with a burner in it (yay IBM for finally giving me a bloody laptop!), I haven't played with it yet. /nm ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 18 Nov 2002 13:37:04 -0500 From: "Nadyne Mielke" Subject: Re: [oztori] A New Idea "AndrewR" said: > How about we poll our most favourite (available) > Live MP3's/tracks that are out there (that people > have) and work out the track order, and then burn > them and send them round to each other!?! After you've installed EAC, get a zipped LAME executable from and unzip it to the directory to which you installed EAC. Haven't really listened to anything of the album, never DLed any mp3s ('cept for ASF ages ago), so the whole thing is fairly new to me. It's not really something I'm in the mood for lately, I want something more upbeat right now but it's not a bad little album. I like Wednesday. I liked that the first time I heard it on JJJ's 2002 program a few weeks back now. Strange I like. Crazy I also like, it just sounds like something else, can't think of what, but I'm definitely hearing another song in there. (it's the guitar, definitely ripped off from another tune, have to figure out what) Sweet sangria sounds like it belongs on Choirgirl - anyone get that? I think pancake is going to grow on me and maybe become a favourite but right now i'm indifferent about it, the drawn out vocals put me off. i can't see New York left a nice impression on me. Mrs Jesus is unreal. So is Taxi Ride. Like them both a lot. Another girl's paradise I also liked. My CD player doesn't seem to like gold dust, it started jumping. Bah! Track I don't like is don't make me come to Vegas. The songs near the end of the album seemed to leave a better impression on me, dunno if this is because the feel of the album grew on me and I got more into the album or if those tracks actually are better *shrug*. Have to listen to it again. But I'm going back to listening to the CD that seems to be stuck in my cd player for the last few days. Its footprint is bloody huge, and it eats up resources like no-one's business. To be fair, this is based on the last time I used Trillian, about a year ago. Maybe they've fixed it now. Since I only use ICQ for instant messenging [1], I use an ICQ clone on my Win boxen. It's called Miranda, has a tiny footprint, and allows nifty plug-ins for other cool functionality. It's open source, so you don't have to deal with the bloody adware of the current official ICQ Windows client. http://miranda-icq.sourceforge.net/ /nm [1] That's not entirely true. We have an internal instant messenger, which hooks up to AIM. I do have an AIM ID, but I almost never remember to login. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 19 Nov 2002 12:08:03 +1000 From: "Daniel Nolan" Subject: [oztori] "The Press" review of SW (4 stars!) The Press Edition 2SAT 16 NOV 2002, Page 004 SOUND CHECK By Kelly Andrew Source: INL TORI AMOS Scarlet's Walk (Epic Records) * * * * The publicity material describes this epic 18-track album as "not so much a collection of songs as a sonic novel". It's based around a symbolic journey across America, but apart from the mention of cities like Las Vegas, and New York, it just seems like a bunch of songs. But, they are very good songs. Amos' voice is wonderful in a variety of styles, from fragile folk, to growling rock and feisty pop. The sound is richly layered with her trademark rippling piano, as well as deft percussion, and strings performed by the Sinfonia of London. It's hard to pin Amos into a music genre, she seems to do her own thing, regardless of fashion. Wednesday has Beatles-ish jaunty rhythms, the dramatic I can't see New York, reminds of Kate Bush, and Taxi Ride has commercial radio hit written all over it. The album can be pretentiously melodramatic in parts, but overall it's an enjoyable ride. --Kelly Andrew Copyright, The Christchurch Press Company Limited 2002, All rights reserved. Well maybe it's a "twicky" word to say, because it has 2 consonant blends in it (st, and sk), has 3-syllables, and one of those twicky 'r' sounds in the middle ;) Still, not as appauling as people who are 'grown ups' and say "aks" (pronounced "arks") for ask... While I have your attention, I really don't understand people who think China has no value. Would somebody care to explain why this song has apparently no artistic merit? Likewise, what is wrong with TVAB Live? I really like that CD, must have played it on repeat over & over many a time. In fact I wouldn't be able to contribute to a "best of live" compilation because it's the only live stuff of Tori's that I actually listen to (have got some bootlegs/mp3's but I don't listen to them very often... this seems to be a trend for me generally though with live stuff, I have about 100 recordings of various U2 concerts live which all used to be played heavily when I was younger, so much younger than today... but now I find I've changed my mind & most I just ignore, except for NYE 1990 which is great to play on New Year's Day & I have this tradition of playing U2's "NYD" on NYD every year anyway...) With SLG, I actually played it on repeat for about 2 weeks when I first got it (so I would have heard it more than 15 times), even though now half of it makes me cringe & I think the last time I played it would be well over 6 months ago (I can remember what the songs sound like, that's enough for me.) I was far too fond of the original versions of Enjoy The Silence, Happiness is a Warm Gun (bad mistake to cover a Beatles song, not even U2 could make their cover worthy of the original), Heart of Gold, Real Men, I Don't Like Mondays not to consider that Tori somewhat ruined these songs when she messed around of them (especially Heart of Gold, she really tore the soul out of it)... and the rest are interesting, but even then I tend to agree with allmusic.com's assessment: " it's very hard to tell what she's trying to say with these songs. Is she the fat blonde actress in the Velvet Underground's "New Age"? Mother Superior in the Beatles' "Happiness is a Warm Gun" (recorded with an anti-gun recitation from her father)? Is she the chair in Depeche Mode's "Enjoy the Silence"? How does Tom Waits' "Time" fit into the equation? Tori never tells us, either lyrically or through her musical arrangements witness the bizarre deconstruction of Neil Young's "Heart of Gold," another song that doesn't seem to fit her theme, so she dresses it up in flanged guitar and neo-trip-hop beats. Tori's sexual politics are so poorly constructed, appearing almost nonexistent, that the music by default rises to the forefront and it almost meets the demands. ... it really is nothing more than another, pretty good Tori Amos record, only not quite as interesting because she didn't write the tunes." (Their review of SW is very sharp & to the point, too.) I am the chair in DM's "Enjoy the Silence"!
