I don't think SWLE will be worth as much, simply b/c it's been available in AMERICA.. which means lots of copies musta been pressed. And b/c any 'new' Ltd Edn things Tori releases these days aren't nearly as difficult to obtain as the *truly* limited stuff from her first 2 albums (eg. UK Ltd Edn CD singles). I'm surprised MP (don't think I've seen anyone abbreviate More Pink to that before) sells for what it does these days.. I saw heaps of 'em when it was out. And it only propelled UTP back to #44 on the albums chart here, so it can't have all sold out str8 away.. even though she was touring here at the time. Yet for all its graphic freakishness, A Sorta Fairytale, the first single from Scarlet's Walk, is one of the finest, catchiest songs the singer has yet produced. As with most things Amos does, there is a grand plan behind this album, presented as a picaresque journey through America, narrated by Scarlet-Amos-Everywoman and partly related to September 11. ``Scarlet is me sometimes, she's a drop of blood sometimes, she's the land sometimes,'' says Amos of her quest for answers. An interesting if cryptic premise, perhaps, but for most listeners this is simply the latest Tori Amos album -- nearly an hour and a quarter of new, fairly traditional, intense piano- based material. Scarlet's journey begins in LA with Amber Waves, about a young woman ravaged by the porn industry yet given a glimmer of hope by our protagonist. A Sorta Fairytale is a relationship lament that introduces Amos's fascination with her Cherokee roots. Each song is connected to a road trip traced on a map, with further information and dreamy photographs posted on Scarlet's Web at www.toriamos.com. The multimedia angle might be a bit of a gimmick but the album, with its otherworldly tracks such as Carbon, Pancake and Gold Dust, and the slightly funkier Don't Make Me Come to Vegas and Sweet Sangria, has the power to stand alone. I was recently at a conference where nobody assumed anyone's gender until they themselves had declared it (and if it wasn't either M or F, that was fine also). The world did not fall apart, we did not spend half our day trying to figure out each person's gender (as you would have it); in fact most of us were able to spend our time far more productively by being able to get on with other things instead of worrying if other people would assume our gender in/correctly. I would say that just about everyone who does not comply with normative standards of behaviour, appearance, sexuality, etc. etc. would find that generalisations become a hindrance at some point in their lives. > > > and can never > > be > > "accurately" made, and much harm has been done in > > their > > name. If we are > going to be "non-generalising" here. > Name the studies that haven't :) The very nature of empirical scientific research means that generalised judgements are made on the basis of a sample which may or may not reflect the population at large, and the degree of error involved means that some percentage of that population will not comply with the expected results. (What follows is lengthy and definately OT, but an interesting read & a genuine example of how generalisations can fuck people up.) But to give a specific example... "The current treatment for people born with intersex conditions is for medical professionals to decide the sex a child shall be raised, and then surgically and hormonally reinforce that choice. This treatment paradigm is based on the work of Dr John Money, who hypothesised that: 1. All children whether they are intersexed or not are psychosexually neutral at birth, and their gender can be successfully assigned until the age of two; and 2. The gender assignment of a child can be successfully made if the sexual anatomy is made to look normal and if the parents treat their child in what he considered to be the typical way for a child of that gender. (ie pink room, frilly dresses and dolls for girls, and blue room, rough and tumble play, and toy trucks for boys). Dr Moneys theory was universally accepted as the treatment paradigm for children with intersex conditions with amazing ease. There was no empirical evidence to support this theory, except for the Twin Case which was subsequently discredited by Prof. Milton Diamond and Dr Keith Sigmundson." (from the Androgen Insensitivity Support Group, Australia website, http://home.vicnet.net.au/~aissg/) Despite this discreditation, thousands of babies with ambigious genitalia and/or intersexed conditions have their genitals surgically altered before the age of 2 in order that the child has a "normal" appearance; because according to the dominant medical discourse, if a child does not look like normative notions of what a boy or girl should look like, s/he will grow up horribly maladjusted & never fit in. In fact these children often have a far worse time in adulthood when they fail to feel they fit into the gender they were raised as (because it seems birth has a stronger role to play in gender than socialisation). Despite that most intersexed individuals who had their genitals surgically altered grow up very dissatisfied with what happened to them as a child, and the UN and AMA rulings that such surgery is genital mutilation & should be banned, this surgery still contines in Australia today because doctors are more willing to work with the generalisation (based on a failed experiment with a sample size of 2) that it is essential for children to grow up with the normative physical characteristics of "boy" or "girl". Not only is 'discourse' an acceptable word in the context, it is actually the only really correct word. I think medical LITERATURE is what Henry really should have written. I don't know - I just have personal 'issues' with the word 'discourse'... It reminds me all too well of sitting through lectures on "discourse assessment following traumatic brain injury"... emphasis on the TRAUMATIC ;) All a pointless exercise really if you ask cynical moi. I also hate 'literature' as well, for that matter. so :P Nathan. ===== "They don't expect boys to pretend to be nice, but they do with girls, and I'm not a nice person!" - Siobhan Fahey. _______________________________________________________________________ U2 on LAUNCH - Exclusive greatest hits videos http://launch.yahoo.com/u2 ------------------------------ End of oztori-digest V2 #328 ****************************
