Mostly because I've practically finished my degree and need some time to kill whilst I discover what I'm going to be doing for the rest of my life... I have nothing to say about SW because I'm still waiting on my dad to give it to me ("he will supply"--Tori content) & he's waiting for the Sony rep to give it to him ("she will supply"--more content) so I'm trying to be patient (absurdly, I think I'm anticipating seeing what charm I end up with more than the new album... and btw, if anyone needs a stable link to see these things, try http://www.thedent.com/charms.html and YES there is a bus) enough from me, for now... I wonder if her lowly debut position of #20 was even helped a 'tad' by Sony buying their own product to gain a higher chart placing? Possibly.. but then I guess why do they really care what # Tori debuts at, and also her albums with Atlantic did better, and they are't quite as bad riggers as Sony are. Hi everyone, I apologise for this epic post in advance. I don't have a website to put it on and I wouldn't have the faintest idea how to make one! If you want a somewhat vague initial song-by-song review of SW, read on. If not, scroll on! I finally got the album yesterday. My LE has yet to arrive but I'm just so happy to get the actual album! I had such a rotten week last week and this is the perfect start to this week! Andrew, it would not be a mistake for you to put the album on right now. You'll love it, no matter where you are. The first listen was a bit overwhelming and I couldn't separate the songs properly. But, on the second listen (with my b/f) I was quite taken! Songs that jumped out at me then were 'Carbon', 'Pancake', 'Taxi Ride', 'Your Cloud' 'Sweet Sangria', Virginia' and 'Scarlet's Walk'. But, they're all just so delicious! And quite special if you listen at night with a candle (that's just quirky old me though). I also strongly recommend that you go to the Dent and check out the SW 'bio' there, if you haven't already. It explains EVERYTHING behind every song. ***** Let me first say that one of the best things about this album is the backing vocals. They are sublime! I'm so taken by them. They all work so well! I have a lot of respect for artists that do their own backing vocals. Bjork is another artist who does her own...There are probably more and they totally rock my world. **Amber Waves Not quite sure how I feel about this song yet, but I like the story behind it. I thought it would actually be slower... ****A Sorta Fairytale I really like this -it's kinda sweet and I love the chorus. ***Strange This is a mirrorball song I think! I imagine being on a merry-go-round, or one of those round-about things you find in a park (like the one in the American Cornflake Girl video). Something that revolves anyway! *****Carbon This song is quite personal for me because a person very close to me also suffers from manic depression (or bi-polar illness as it's known these days). I love it to bits. I especially connect with the lyric 'keep your eyes on her'. The effect that is used on Tori's voice during parts of the chorus is great. I love all of the experimental effects and echoes used on this album. ****Crazy The beginning is gorgeous! The woman has some great control over her voice...wonderful. Wampum Prayer Wow, this was almost spooky with the candle on the second listen! Again, fantastic voice control acapella style. **Don't Make Me Come To Vegas This one hasn't really jumped out at me yet... ****Sweet Sangria She's a beauty... 'yeah you think about that' -chills! The guitar is quite different from most of the other songs -an interesting new sound. ****Your Cloud Dreamyness! I think this song is a sort of turning point in the Walk...it's the feeling I get. Which way is Scarlet gonna go now? The part that starts 'if there is a horizontal line...' is great. *****Pancake God I love this one! It's a strange song for me lyrically and I'd love to hear Tori's take on it on 'Scarlet Stories'... My favourite part starts at 2.20 when she speaks to Zion. I wanted it to last longer! *****I Can't See New York A tear formed when I listened to it for a third time by myself. Not only for the Sep. 11 victims, but for all the other atrocities and bloodshed that has been going on recently. I felt that Scarlet/Tori was looking down on everything going on that day from high in the sky (I know she's supposed to be on a plane but that's not essential). It's very beautiful. I'm not sure why but at 2.34 and 5.57 reminds me of a Metallica song! Maybe the guys talked her into it... The piano gave me chills -similar to 'Happiness' which was my fave on SLG. I wanted more of the piano on that song, but I got my feed on ICSNY. **Mrs Jesus Another one that hasn't jumped out at me yet... *****Taxi Ride Totally in love with this song too. I love the voice effect here... 'I'm glad you're on my side' CHILLS!!!! 'Riot Poof' was one of my faves on Venus too. If I had a car, I'd put it on and playfully drive through the city. Volume at a very generous level! ****Another Girl's Paradise Love the chorus...I'm not sure what else to say about this one! ****Scarlet's Walk ****Virginia ****Gold Dust These last three are a very poignant finish, as someone pointed out before. The lyric 'what do you plan to do with all your stories?' jumped at me because I love writing and I have many I have written and have yet to write about Japan. The beginning of Virginia reminds me of the live version of 'Bells For Her' on the live. Still Orbiting CD. Very pretty. Gold Dust is very similar to ASF, but it does close the album very nicely...According to the bio, this is where Scarlet gives birth! Thankyou for your patience! I'm completely worn out... Enjoy! Go for it Andrew! Helen :) xoxox P.S What is an Arp? Which songs did Tori play it on? _________________________________________________________________ Surf the Web without missing calls! I experienced a simliar 'phenomenon' with my CD player when I got SW - hence the "SW broke my CD player!" or whatever e-mail I sent to the list. My CD player, although nearly 9 years old now, has a triple laser-beam reader or something, and so in the past, it has sometimes had trouble reading bootleg/poorer quality CDR's, as it tends to pick up 'faults' that other CD players don't.. (which is a bit of a pain in the arse/ass at times!). It usually goes all 'static-y' sounding when there are probz. Although... about 2 weeks before I got SW my player was having trouble reading a CDR that it was previously reading OK.. so I don't know if the problem was just with SW, or if my beloved stereo is going kaput :( Atm, SW is a bit 'hit and miss'. It usually works OK if I've played another CD BEFORE putting in SW... But if I just switch on the power and put SW in str8 away, it probably has problems more than 50% of the time :( I don't think it's a copy protection thing either, as I have copied SW onto a CDR for my car. Also have a similar problem with the US-pressed SW (from the "limited" edition pack thing), so for once it can't just be the crappy Ausraaaaaaaaaaaaayan record company's fault (as much as I'd like to be ;) Nathan. ===== "They don't expect boys to pretend to be nice, but they do with girls, and I'm not a nice person!" - Siobhan Fahey. _______________________________________________________________________ HotJobs - Search new jobs daily now http://hotjobs.yahoo.com/ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 4 Nov 2002 22:10:41 -0800 (PST) From: Nathan "®" Subject: Re: [oztori] Warning! review of the Walk commencing... So did the "limited" edition chart then (outside of the top 50)? But I don't buy that reasoning totally... since if the "limited" edition was really *that* limited, there wouldn't be enough copies around to significantly reduce sales of the 'regular' pressing. > Too much emphasis is placed on the charts, which are > easily rigged > anyway and really no indication of the true > popularity of current > releases. :) Mmmmmmmyes... But generally one would assume the albums charts (excepting the recent Shakaya incident) are less susceptible to 'rigging' than the singles charts - simply because it's a lot more expensive to mass-buy a $25 product than a $5 one.
