Is it a case of 'once bitten, twice shy' for the appauling SLG? Tori's previous debuts, excepting LE, have all been top 10's: SLG: 7 TVAB: 6 FTCH: 8 BFP: 6 UTP: 5 (LE peaked at 14 for anyone who still cares :P) So what went wrong? Severe lack of promotion? Worse still - SW came in one spot lower than Nikki Webster's ironically titled "Bliss" album, debuting at #19. Also SW is at a lower position than Kylie's "Fever", which has been in the charts for 56 weeks... (what does that say about the music 'tastes' of Austraaaaaaaayans?). The our-career-is-really-over-but-our-record-company-which-also-happens-to-be-Sony...-of-which-Epic-is-a-division-of..-keeps-buying-our-stuff-so-it-debuts-higher-than-it-otherwise-would Killing Heidi's 2nd album debuted at 12. Nirvana debuted at #1 with an album full of already-released stuff except for one 'new' (although it would have to obviously be at least 8.5 years old) song. Yes, the charts don't really mean 'squat' from 'our' point of view - as long as Tori puts out 'quality product'... But I wonder how her record co. will feel about this? (admittedly they probably won't give a fuck about Australia.. and SW's performance in the US will be all that really matters). SW is looking like debuting in the low 20's/even 30's in the UK as well - her worst chart placing for an album there also. Yeah, I agree that the major downer is that it diminishes the (already very slim) prospect of a tour ... still there *are* worse selling artists who still make it out here (and still have sell-out performances). And I think that a lot of the blame for the poor entry position has to do with the fact that SW didn't arrive at many retailers until Monday afternoon or Tuesday, and has yet to arrive at some (I notice Grace Bros doesn't have it yet, even though it has a fairly large CD section, for example, and neither does Fish Records). Also, Sony really has done *nothing* to push the album here. Nothing. Less than one tenth of what Warner did for the inferior SLG. I've heard rumour that Sony will be making a big push soon, so maybe SW will buck the trend of good-entry-position-then-quick-drop-off and become a modest-start-but-climbing-to-sleeper-hit-status album. It has the quality and the accessibility to become that. Fingers crossed. :-) Jules Will Johncock wrote:> 20 on the ARIA Charts :( i suppose theres good and bad points to tori not charting in australia. its bad because if she doesn't sell well here she'll never tour again. but on the good side it means if she ever does tour here tickets will be a fraction easier to obtain...also quite frankly it doesn't bother me at all that an artist i love and respect isn't a chart topping one... it's all good :) - --------------------------------- Yahoo! Severe lack of promotion? In a nutshell - yes I think (I wrote tink a la Kendra) that that is it. The number of (7?) Music shops that I went into a week before Scuzzy came out - who had NO IDEA that it was being release was a pretty good indication. No posters. HMV in the city didn't even have one of their little "Tori's new album" Empty CD cases in the Tori section until a few days before. Actually I just rang HMV than and asked how it had been selling. The lady was REALLY nice and said, yeah it sold well last week - but looking on the Computer it wasn't SPECTACULAR. She says they didn't get any posters (OK they don't have anyone to hang them there but still). And the posters in peculiar positions - like billboard posters have been few and far between - like on that one I saw at Chermside was put there Last week. And it's next to a condemned Petrol Station - so it'll prollay be pulled down. Not happy Epic/Sony. Maybe Tori's Management need a nice letter? Let's all write letters - we can all help each other - cause I for one have sent a grand total of 4 letters or something like that! :) And those never 'official'. They just never taught us such things at school. They though it would be better to review a 1980's video in English class.
