OK, Hi guys and gals, this is a general non-tori related e-mail to reintroduce me into the world of current computers. Yes, I've FINALLY got a new computer! *ringing of bells* Tis great, and I'm just getting my way around Windows XP. Is it just me or was Windows 95 just a lot more simple (well interface wise) although I'm sure there are a lot of cool things about Windows XP I'm yet to discover. I have some requests. 1. Burning CDs. Now, what is the best software to download (that someone could give me ;) ) that is the best for burning/copying/organising/compiling my music? 2. DVDs. I have a DVD player, but I heard that if you play a certain region in that player for a number of times it locks into that region. Now in the future I want to be able to purchase some region 1 and region 2 DVDs and play them, but I won't be able to if they are locked out. Now I know there are DVD players that are regionless - but I want something for my computer DVD (the only DVD player I have). I heard that there is software out there that will unlock the player permanently so that I'm able to be region-free forever!?! Can anyone give me any info on this!?! Special thanks goes out to computer Guru Zac Ariel who helped me when I thought my adventure at installing a network card into my old computer (to transfer files etc) had blown up in my face. I happily have my new computer chocked with assorted Tori performances. Now I can here more "Yesss, I said"'s than ever before! Andrew P.S. I'm mentally compiling my first Music compilation!! I heard >that there is software out there that will unlock the player permanently >so that I'm able to be region-free forever!?! Can anyone give me any >info on this!?! Okay, this is what I know: Some DVD-ROMS are all region, but most (and most recent ones) will lock to one region after a certain number of switches (usually about 5 switches). What this means is that you can change the region of your player 5 times, and on the fifth time, it will become permanent. There are, of course, ways to get around this, but the method varies from manufacturer to manufacturer and model to model. For some, a simple software patch will do it. Others require a more risky firmware patch (that 'flashes' and resets whatever part of the DVD-ROM is responsible for the region locking) which may work or may destroy your DVD-ROM forever (and void your warranty in the process)! And some DVD-ROMS (like, alas, mine) don't have any patches available, and you're stuck with what you've got. There was a really good internet resource that I consulted a while back that listed every DVD-ROM model currently available, and listed what patches were available, and their prospects of success. For a recent list, try entering "DVD-ROM" and "region" as your search terms in google. Hope that helps. Jules - --------------------------------- Yahoo! A few of my best friends work for, have worked for, or are applying to Mallesons. While they all speak generally quite well of the place, I have heard many a horror story about what they do to paralegals. Still, it's the price most are willing to pay for being among the Mallesons "chosen ones". Being a former-Mallesons employee is much like being a Freemason, or, to a lesser extent, a Baldwin. It opens many doors that would otherwise be forever closed. Many are willing to suffer for that privilege. And hey, it's a lot less painful than having Billy Baldwin for a brother. Burning software - Nero, keys are easy to come by on DejaNews ;) I don't know what you mean by 'organising' precisely but here's my story... *screen goes wavy* Decided I was tired of having cds stacked all around my room, on the floor, in the bathroom, in my bed (I'm sure you all have the same problem ;) so I digitised them all. It took about four days to do but was well worth it - now I can just think of a song and *click* I'm listening to it. Step 1/ You need enough harddrive space - I have 17GB totaling 200hrs of music. Step 3/ You need to be careful, to get everything right. Step 2/ You need to download this program: http://www.exactaudiocopy.de/ It will rip perfect wave files of your cds and title them for you. Step 3/ You need to decide what encoding format you are going to keep your music in. Mp3 is getting a bit long in the tooth so I went with a relatively new format MPC: http://www.mpegplus.de/eng/index.html that has really amazing sound reproduction. Step 4/ The slooooowwwwwww bit. Put in the CD - rip the CD - take out the CD - Put in another CD - rip the CD - take out the CD... Did this for a while and then let the computer churn away overnight encoding the CDs. Step 5/ Cue them all up in Winamp and marvel at the wonders of a modern technology that allows one to have thousands and thousands of songs at one's fingertips and yet still think that one has nothing to listen to. :) Step 6/ It has other advantages too - I can store my cds away safely now and be sure that they won't be stolen. >2. I remember seeing on some 'music is the devil' > Christian site a page on Tori where they site this > lyric as an example of her 'badness' or whatever.. and > then say that the use of an expletive there is totally > unnecessary (which.. I think I may slightly agree with > them there). > and then: > But the most annoying thing I find about *those* > forums is that it always takes so fucking long for the > pages to load thanks to everyone's stupid signature > (sp?). > I think I may slightly agree with Nathan that his use of the F-word was totally unnecessary there... unless of course he is prepared to realise that "It gets so-o-o cold" (or worse, "it gets so blinking cold" or "it gets so Murray Buck-ing cold") just doesn't have quite the same ring to it. (Interestingly in Nathan's case, "it always takes so-o-o long" might actually work better, particularly if borrowed from the Beatles' "Daytripper"--"it took me so-o-o long to find out but I found out") She took me half the way there, Henry. too much of a diary: http://2much.livejournal.com/ this is not a conclusion no revolution just a little confusion - ------------------------------------------------- Get your free @Elvis e-mail account at Elvis.com! http://www.elvis.com ------------------------------ End of oztori-digest V2 #267 ****************************
