Well B-sides are what made me buy the singles... didn't they get that? You wouldn't buy just one song on a CD... you'd get the mp3. If the CD had the song + bee-sides (And not just remixes) then you buy the single. If they are just going to have one-tracks now - they should bring back the cute little 3" CD singles. The following, however, has nothing to do with my reply: >If they are just going to have one-tracks now - they should bring back the >cute little 3" CD singles. (Even they had enough room for one b-side). The idea I read was that they were hoping to re-introduce the US$1 single. The idea being that it is such a small sum of money that people will pay it for a song they kinda like, rather than just get the mp3. To keep costs down, of course, these singles will be just that, *singles*. No extras, no easter eggs ... and no b-sides. Of course, whether people will actually go along with this or not is another story. At least with b-sides, you had legion EWF willing to buy a song they already had, just so they could get a new song on top of it. Hmn. Jules - --------------------------------- Yahoo! You can comfortably fit 20 minutes of 'music' on them though - so they only reason I guess they were replaced with the 5" CD single is that most CD consumers are size queens who prefer 5 inches to 3. If you've got a top-loading CD player you can easily play them - you just put 'em around the middle circle as per 5" CD's and they play. With open-out CD players, you can still play them in the 'smaller' ring around the middle (yes, it has a purpose). Even if that fails, you used to (still can somewhere probably) be able to get 'converters' that you could put on 3" CDs so they would become 5". You're running a risk using anything but standard size CDs, as utterly cool as those little business card CDs are. :( For the record, minidiscs are totally different -- the disc is in a square cartridge-type thing that you push into your md player. Besides the question of bitrate, I'm wondering what kind of sound system they played it on. There's a significant difference in the sound on US$20 speakers and US$200 speakers and US$2000 speakers. /nm ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Aug 2002 12:23:35 -0500 From: "Nadyne Mielke" Subject: Re: [oztori] Bee-sides BS said: > The idea I read was that they were hoping to re- > introduce the US$1 single. If I'll pay US$1 for a Coke, why wouldn't I pay US$1 for a single song? It's definitely an impulse-purchase sort of thing. > To keep costs down, of course, these singles will be > just that, *singles*. No extras, no easter eggs ... > and no b-sides. I don't see how bee-sides would increase the production cost of the single. The cost to press a CD is the same, regardless of whether you put 4 minutes or 40 minutes on it. 3" CD singles aren't completely gone. There have been a few released. R.E.M. did some limited edition 3" singles in the UK for their most recent album, for example. /nm ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 21 Aug 2002 08:19:20 +1000 From: Mr Andrew Rayfield Subject: Re: [oztori] Bee-sides BS Yeah but, limited edition 3" singles aren't exactly main-stream. Hee hee, totally off topic, although Tori would make an excellent Elf... Go to theonering.net and you can see my first contribution to that website!! Woohoo - I scanned in (crappily I might add, but hey - it was a newspaper article) a small clipping from the Courier Mail yesterday about the World premier of TTT (The Two Towers). It mightn't be a big deal to a lot of you - but I thought it was pretty cool. I can't believe the Courier Mail actually had some 'world first news'. Andrew P.S. My 'handle/nick/name' might be coming up as Andrew Rayfield cause I'm at uni - using my.uq web-based e-mail thingy... cause I got here early. :) I actually got on here to look up a word, and now look what I do! :) AndrewR ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 21 Aug 2002 13:30:15 +1000 From: "Lavenda" Subject: Re: [oztori] Bee-sides BS Well haven't we become all official!
