I think that was his name - the pink octopus thing from "Secret Squirrel") * Bugs Bunny (well drag queen - seemed to like dressing up as a gal too much; always seen gnawing on elongated objects; "what's up" doc could be interpreted ambiguously...) * Yo Semite Sam - just the 'stache. * Bananaman (spandex & the name says it all) Nat. _______________________________________________________ HotJobs - Search Thousands of New Jobs http://www.hotjobs.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 9 Aug 2002 01:23:34 GMT From: Rebecca Appleton Subject: RE: [oztori] lord of the rings - ot of course On Thu, 08 Aug 2002 00:21:29 -0700 (PDT), Too Much wrote: >I haven't seen the movie so I can't comment on whether >Bevan is "stretching things too far" (what "things" I >wonder?? heheh) but I did notice that Andrew & Bindy >are straight & therefore somewhat more likely to be in >consensus on the matter... > >I say, you damned straights should stay out of it. ;) > Ha, I'm afraid I'm gonna have to rock the boat here and be the gay one siding with the straights... lol I know I've bitched and moaned on this list before (when Jodie Foster came up) about this apparent need by the queer world of queer role models. I understand it, and I can appreciate the positives of having celebrities that everyone loves (etc) coming out as queer and maybe opening a few minds in the process... but why queer people need/want to see similar things bothers me still. Looking for signs of queerness in everyone you find intelligent/attractive/etc just seems so awful, so "we need reassurance that we're okay". And again I can appreciate that that may be something that some people need... but I wish they didn't. (I wish that, if people wanted a role model, they could look past shit like gender, orientation, colour, etc.) I thought the relationships in LOTR were pretty well communicated, considering the amount of stuff in the books that could have been much more "gay-looking" by society's standards (ie, that close males have to be getting it on). They managed to convey what was written in such a way that it could even (gasp!) be understood that the hobbits were, amazingly enough, *just friends*! No small feat! Certainly far more difficult than looking at the movie and saying, "They're so gay!" :P ~Becc :) - -- www.crappism.org ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 9 Aug 2002 09:00:48 +1000 (EST) From: =?iso-8859-1?q?Dylan=20Plant?= Subject: [oztori] Stuff Hey everyone, Was in Voyager Video in Ivanhoe yesterday and noticed Sessions @ West 54th DVD's for sale...Vol 1 seemed crap, but Vol 2 had Ben Folds Five and Jane Siberry? (I >wish that, if people wanted a role model, they could look past shit >like gender, orientation, colour, etc.) I dunno... I don't think it's necessarily a bad or unhealthy thing to pick up on queer subtext in culture that others might not see. They talk a lot at uni about queer reading practices, and the special place cinema holds as a site of (sort of 'impossible') desire. In the academic studies it's kind of just assumed that queer readers (which doesn't mean every non-hetero person every viewing) do appropriate things for their own meanings - like adopting marlene dietrich, jodie foster, bob the builder, xena etc as gay icons, regardless of their actual sexuality. They don't really talk about why, but i guess you could interpret it as some form of political action (nobody else'll do it - most str8s would try to ignore homoeroticism if it wasn't mentioned) or just as fun? Personally it adds to the viewing pleasure to imagine something more than perhaps was directly intended. I don't think it's productive to insist that the characters are gay, but nobody's really doing that here. It's just a bit of FUN! :) _________________________________________________________________ Send and receive Hotmail on your mobile device: http://mobile.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 8 Aug 2002 20:55:35 -0700 (PDT) From: Nathan "®" Subject: Re: [oztori] the whole world's gone gay The other NR of the list, nina riddel wrote: > >Bert and Ernie - still going strong, what a great > couple :) > > did you know they're introducing an hiv-positive > muppet on the south african > sesame street? if it works, it'll be introduced > everywhere! i wonder if > he'll be a friend of ernie and berts? It's just a bit of FUN! :) Indeed. I just don't think it really is that apparent with Frodo and Sam like Rebecca said, Peter Jackson/Sean Astin/Elijah Wood brought the characters to the screen as the best of friends not two gay guys on a lembas-fuelled jaunt to Middle-Earth hot-spot/gay night-club "Mount Doom" :) ------------------------------ End of oztori-digest V2 #231 ****************************
