I think this album is really about Tori's obsession with trying to cross America by buying her way across as a drugged-out prostitute/hooker. "A Sorta Fairytale" - something she want's to do but knows it'll probably never happen (like going back to Australia) Amber Waves is about one night where she made double her usual after participating in some golden-shower work. Pancake is where on night in Kansas City she was involved in a 'pancake' threesome where she was nearly squashed flat by a couple who's combined weight exceeded 700lbs Taxi Ride is where she managed to pay off a $500 fare from Boise, Idaho to Chicago, Ilinois by performing sexual acts for the driver. Crazy is what she went after trying some 'Gold Dust' at a party in San Francisco, California. :) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Jul 2002 21:14:31 +1000 From: "Lavenda" Subject: Re: [oztori] DAMN Tori for naming her album something which can be abbreviated as SW! > Lavenda wrote: > > > OK, here's a question: What are your thoughts on > > Datura as an > > anti-established religion song? > > Yesh couldwellbe indeed. Especially the bit about more blood from the tip of _your_ star (putting Tori on a pedestal, somewhere she doesn't want to be) directs it towards fans. Totally relevant with what peeps have been saying about ASF, it being a happier sounding song, and they want her sadness and pain in her songs. I just want to say that I for one want more of the happy songs! A Sorta Fairytale is totally fucking brilliant. Even my *brothers* like it and that is really saying something! Now, here's where I have to ashamedly admit that I just passed 'Datura' off as a drug-fucked bit of nonsense that nonetheless sounded pretty damned good (and then had to battle with my own inconsistencies, in that I generally gripe about songs that have crappy or meaningless lyrics). I really like this interpretation, especially given that I've been reading about the religious use of peyote tonight by American Indians -- the hallucinogenic drug references in the song finally make sense. I feel idiotic for not having realised it before. ~Becc :) - -- www.crappism.org ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Jul 2002 22:08:16 +1000 From: "Lavenda" Subject: Re: [oztori] DAMN Tori for naming her album something which can be abbreviated as SW! > I just want to say that I for one want more of the happy songs! The only thing I can think of as to why people want to keep expressing pain is because they can relate to it. I guess also aside from all the 'my lover left me/he don't love me/heartbreak' songs, pain isn't something normally addressed in songs these days (as far as teh charts are concerned anyway). AMBER WAVES: Reminds me of Elton John trying to be all boohoo. Pretty, without being dazzling. THEN the drums come in...and the backing vocals...and its actually quite boppy. Then back to the verse, which is pretty. Then drums again for more verse. Not a brilliant song (except for the fun parts) but could be a grower. Musically it could have fit on Under The Pink...although its a bit too produced for that feel. A SORTA FAIRYTALE: Y'all know this one. First new bit - the verse, just piano, bongos and a bit of guitar. A nice bit of variation, but doesn't actually change the song any. Slides back into with some drums, few more backing vocals and then into the chorus. 2nd new bit - free vocalising over backing vocalising of the "riding along side" bit. Vaguely annoying - it has a more 'alive' feel than the rest so doesn't quite fit. But overall - I really like it. PANCAKE: Feels a bit like Rattlesnakes, with the organ, and with some drums. Not enough variation to make it really interesting. Sounds like it should have been on SLG which kinda says it all really :( But when it finishes, you remember it being better than it is when you listen to it. CRAZY: Sadly, not a cover of the Britney Spears song. Tori on the rhodes only is boring. There, I've said it. But vocally, its good. Especially the backing. What is it with her backing vocals that are so good? Similar feel to Pancake - only better. Pretty ending. TAXI RIDE: Now we're looking up! Those last two had me worried. Don't want to describe it, just download it. I really really like it. Mmmm... :) Lush vocals. Really like it. GOLD DUST: Fabtaculous introduction. Fabtaculous arrangement. Will be crap live the way I'm thinking of it - its all strings and orchestra. So pretty! So pretty! Oh wow. Wow. Just download it. Now! Thats an order. My god this is beautiful. Overall: 50/50. We'll just have to see I think. Still, its all looking up :) Note: The files are all to big for me to post on a website and too big for my email server so I'm sorry I can't send them to anyone!
