["Divine Miss M" Subject: [oztori] Don't project, don't connect, protect, Don't expect, suggest. Hello everyone Having just (perhaps for the first time since I signed up) excitedly scrolled through the latest digest I can now yet again contribute to the Numb thing. Everyone was tremendously excited by the release of Numb, as it was the first single off Zooropa (hence the #7 chart position). Never mind that it was a video single--the radio stations had their promo CDs & the bemusing song was played repeatedly. (I can remember being glued to JJJ the weekend before Zooropa was released, Michael Tunne teasing me with the odd preview track every so often...) Since Rattle & Hum, every first single released off every new U2 album has sold like the proverbial hotcake & generally gone to #1 (the most recent example being Beautiful Day)... doubtless if Numb had been a "regular" single it would have received the same treatment. But since some of you dare to doubt my expert U2 knowledge, I am just now browsing the web for some sources... from the official U2 site (u2.com): Numb Video. Release date: June 1993 Notice, please, no mention of "single" and/or "CD"... From the fairly extensive discography of u2wanderer.org: "The first single off of Zooropa wasn't released as a regular single, but only as a video single. It was released worldwide. The Australian release was a limited edition numbered release." (See http://www.u2wanderer.org/disco/50.html for more info, cover, etc.) As Daniel pointed out, the only way to prove this is to produce a genuine commerically-released single of Numb. Which would be pretty difficult since such a thing doesn't exist... Regards, Emma. P.S. Unfortunately I have bad news for Nathan: you're wrong about Outbreak of Love being video only, as I have a cassingle of it... P.P.S. Rooz: since I have come to the conclusion that everything to be done musically has already been done to death & the last true innovators were the Beatles, I think everything since the White Album is "overrated." So you'll have to try harder to bait me. ;) (Something like "Bono is fugly & can't sing for shit" *grin*) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 04 May 2002 17:59:04 +1000 From: "riot poofter" Subject: Re: [oztori] possibly maybe? >>I don't know what your exact source was, but I'm >pretty sure Thor wasn't part of the Sugarcubes... But can you really argue that they weren't one of the most talented & influential artists of the latter half of the 20th century? Objectively, I mean, not just because you don't like their music personally or see them as having a priveledged status in society. Interesting. I wonder if it is possible to write a revisionist music history where the Beatles are at the bottom of the heap and some obscure (preferably female & non-white *wink*) artist could be shown as being the root of all popular music today... Objectively, I mean, not just because you don't like >their music personally or see them as having a priveledged status in >society. Roozi's opinion of the Beatles proves that he is no better than most of the people he ridicules for having closed minded thoughts. He firstly thinks their music is boring. This is a personal opinion and is fair enough (I disagree entirely). However, is inability to see what they did for the music rocknroll industry as a whole, and to see what they achieved with the recording equipment they had (one of his other arguments is that they are badly produced albums). Roozi raves on and on if anyone has missed how Madonna has influences the music industry, yet wont even listen to someone trying to explain why the beatles were even more influential. He is adamant to hate them, and refuses to change his views. The fact is, there was no one doing what the beatles were doing, with what they beatles were doing it with, at a time when the beatles were doing it. Especially the early, pre recording days of the beatles in germany, anyone who was at any of those shows will vouch for the a head of their times performances they gave, and this, it needs to be remembers, is with amplification equipment that probably wasnt a lot more powerful then most peoples surround sound amplifiers. They essentially invented modern rocknroll and popular music in general, musically, lyrically, and performance wise, and having a blinded view of saying they are boring is one of (but definitely not the only) the most hypocritical points of view roozi has. The only reason I can come up with as to why he does hate them, is because they dont include a black lesbian angst female vocalist. >Interesting. I wonder if it is possible to write a revisionist music >history where the Beatles are at the bottom of the heap and some obscure >(preferably female & non-white *wink*) artist could be shown as being the >root of all popular music today... Perhaps punk ("Cool, the Sex Pistols >hate the Beatles!") was the closest to such an exercise?
