But 'twas only a single in the US. "It would take a strong, strong man to ever give you up" or something like that (might have been "let you go" rather than 'give you up'??). Look, I also could have included "My Arms Keep Missing You" (double a-side with 'When I Fall In Love'), "Move Right Out" (follow-up to 'Cry For Help'), and "The Ones You Love" (released in 1993) - but didn't want to "show off" the sheer amount of Rick Astley knowledge I possess ;) > but i also thought i herad that like a prayer sold > more than anything in the > 80s... have herad it of "do they know its xmas" too Well I don't think (from memory) that "Like A Prayer" was #1 here for even consecutive weeks. I think (again from memory) it spent 5 weeks at #1 - but there was a weird period in 1989 when the #1 song was something different each week for 9 weeks in a row (between 'Like A Prayer', 'She Drives Me Crazy', 'Eternal Flame', 'Wind Beneath My Wings'.. and.. er, something else.. 'The Look'?). > eitherw ay, the biggets hits of the 80s (none more > than double [platinum) > pale compared toi teh 90s and since... Really? But then... 'back then' you didn't have 2-part CD single releases, etc. piling up the sales tally. Or the 'flog it on radio for 6 weeks before it's even released so we get a #1 debut' thing. Or the 'Popstars' thing. BUT to get a gold sales award here up until 1989 you had to ship 50 000 copies (only 35 000 now), and 100 000 (only 70 000) now for platinum. > Roozi > *who just realised that "poison" by bardot outseold > any single released in > asutralia in the 80s* OMG that is so sad. Where didya get this info from? Even 'You're The Voice', 'Locomotion' et al? "Poison" only spent something like 12 weeks in the Top 50 here anyway (and only 6 of those in the Top 10 I think). OK, I'm off to consult my 'chart books' from that era.... Like A Prayer (single) debuted on the ARIA charts WE 19/03/89: 3-1-2-2-1-2-1-1-2-1-2-7-6-14-14-18-23-34-31-40-42-47 So it "only" spent 5 weeks at #1 - 2 consecutive :) > however, like a prayer did end up with 7 weeks on > top and was the top single > of 1989. Biggest single - yep. 7 weeks at #1 - nope :) > wbmw and eternal flame were not inolved however... Eternal Flame *was* involved excuzes moi - this was the song that knocked Like A Prayer off #1 on its last week atop the charts. And then Eternal Flame alternated with Wind Beneath My Wings. > this is all true, plus singles wree less used as > promotional tools for > albums and more as untis in tehir own right and were > thus more relatively > expensive (still less than they are now but not > really when inflation is > considered) More relatively expensive????? I remember cassingles back in the day were $3.99, and albums (well cassette ones anyway) retailed for about $19.99... so effectively singles were one fifth the cost of albums. Nowadays singles are often $8.95 or $9.95 are they not? And CD albums can be anything up to $30.95 (at greedy bastard shops) - so they're nearly a third of the price of albums. Plus 'back in the day' you were more likely to get b-sides (well one b-side I s'pose). These days you get about 7 mixes of the same fucking song. > >BUT to get a gold sales award here up until 1989 > you > >had to ship 50 000 copies (only 35 000 now), and > 100 > >000 (only 70 000) now for platinum. > > i'm pretty sure that was changed earlier than > 1989... maybe only about 88 > though... "If I Could Turn Back Time" was certified double-platinum... though this was towards the end of 1989. It was listed on the best-selling chart of 1989 as double platinum. > > > Roozi > > > *who just realised that "poison" by bardot > outseold > > > any single released in > > > asutralia in the 80s* > > > >OMG that is so sad. Yes, but platinum accreditations are based on *trade* sales - NOT over-the-counter sales. So really that just meanst that the shops ordered in excess of 140 000 copies. Whether they all sold or not could be another story altogether.
