Let me just start by saying the woman is amazing. Absolutely freaking amazing. Setting the scene.... M Bar/Restaurant in East Sydney (often mistyped by me as Easy Sydney, which is not entirely incorrect!). Lots and lots of annoying 2dayFM contest winners waiting around outside. Especially annoying ones wearing teeny tiny denim skirts that probably stunt double as handkerchiefs. Was waiting for ages by myself, b/c got there early. Saw the guy from Warners who got me guest listed and spoke to him for a while, told him how glad I was to be there, how grateful I was etc. He said to just have a great time, that I deserved it... for what, I don't know. Not caring much either! Kate then arrived with John, who seemed nice :) We chatted for a while and I told Kate as soon as those doors opened and they started letting the guest listed people in, I was audi. And indeed I was... sorry if it seemed rude m'dear! Inside, it was smaller than I'd expected. The bar took up a big hunk of space on the left, and then on the right in the middle at the back was a semi-circular stage upon which there were two giant candle stands with about seven white candles on each. Along the back of the wall facing the stage was a white bench type thing upon which were lots of little white candles (you know, the kind you put in an incense burner). There were also lots of them on the bar... surprised the place didn't go up in flames! Anyhoo, back to the stage - two chairs, one stool in front of which was a microphone. I firmly positioned myself slightly to the left of the mic - not so left that i wasn't directly in front of her, but enough so that the stand wouldn't obstruct my view. I refused to give up my spot for anyone. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 26 Mar 2002 19:15:46 +1100 From: "Renee Hill" Subject: [oztori] Lani showcase last night - PART 2 - OT There were a couple of loser cameramen to the left of me who wanted to film the 'popstars' (yes, the awful beasts were there... the new popstars - so full of themselves) and practically wanted to stick their cameras in lani's face, but then the artist manager person from warners came over and told them that it wasn't going to happen, that alanis didn't like cameras right in her face like that. The cameramen were all like, "but we have to film two songs, you see, the popstars are over there"... and the warner chickie was all like, "guys, this is alanis morissette. i don't care who they might be, but you're not filming alanis for two songs with the camera in her face". They got into a bit of an altercation and eventually the Warner chickie conceded and said they could film one song and one song only. But they weren't getting any closer as long as I was there! I think we were waiting for roughly an hour once the doors opened for lani to come on, and I was there all by my little lonesome so I started talking to this really nice girl on my right. She was there with her boyfriend, who wasn't really a fan or anything but they won tickets from the radio... don't know her name, but she was nice. The event (did I mention it was acoustic?).... At about 5 past 8 (ish) some important guy hopped up on stage after all the setting up had been done (setlists, harmonica taped to mic, water & lani's tea etc) and said all the usual stuff about how glad they were to have alanis (and he said her name the proper way...) in the country and it was so great to have an artist of this calibre doing a showcase like this etc etc... and then she walked on. She was wearing a pale terracotta-meets-peach colour blouse that was high necked, with ruffles at the neck and sleeves. It was transparent, and she was wearing a black v-neck kind of singlet thing underneath. Her skirt was ankle length black cotton, with black embroided flowers up the top, and a bit of a frill down the bottom. On the feet were a pair of pointy calf high black boots that laced up. Her hair was relatively straight and fell down past her bottom.... looked a little ratty at the ends, but I can forgive that :) She sat down and just kinda introduced the band, then said something about being happy to be here. Someone yelled out "oh god, it's god" and lani giggled and repeated it, then said "no, you're all god..." in her usual semi-annoying but endearing way. I think someone else then said "no, i'm god!" because she laughed and pointed at him and said "i like your sense of self estimation (?)". Can't remember the exact word she used. But it was cute. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 26 Mar 2002 19:15:55 +1100 From: "Renee Hill" Subject: [oztori] Lani showcase last night - PART 3 - OT Then she started singing. She did Precious Illusions, Hands Clean, Head Over Feet, So Unsexy, and Utopia. After Precious Illusions, she announced that it was "hot as fuck up here" and commented jokingly about her pretty, now sweaty blouse. Hands Clean was amazing. Absolutely unreal, everyone knew it and cheered and loved it... During Head Over Feet she looked radiant. That's really the only word for it.... she was smiling and laughing and just looking generally happy, which was nice. She played the guitar during the chorus... And she's learnt how to play the harmonica! AT LAST! It sounded really good, and everyone cheered really loudly when she picked it up. Her grin was huge. So Unsexy was waaaaay better than the album version, especially without that multi layering vocal thing. Just before Utopia she spoke about coming back to tour at the end of the year, because apparently she'd been told she'd "be such an asshole" if she didn't. She said she'd been told that by about ten Aussstralians that night. I typed Australians like that because of the way she said it, can't really get it across via email. She said she'll be back though! YAY! .... Utopia was fantastic (made me a little bit teary!). Her voice was just in such great form. She had to study the lyrics a little before she started, which I thought was kinda amusing, but once she got into it, it was beautiful. She still can't really sit still, her hands always need to be doing something (she had the worst colour nail polish on, a boring caramel colour, blech)... Then she was done and she did her group kiss thing with her hands and bowed, and walked off. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 26 Mar 2002 19:16:10 +1100 From: "Renee Hill" Subject: [oztori] Lani showcase last night - PART 4 - OT I grabbed the setlist but didn't have an opportunity to grab much else... she took her guitar pick and harmonica with her, and they were the two things I had my eyes on. Then I went to see the Warner fellow who listed me and gave him the absolute biggest hug in the entire world. What a legend. Going wine hunting at lunch for him. Shortly after that I left because I didn't really want to hang around all by my lonesome, and I couldn't see Kate outside so I put myself into a cab and went home! And that, people, was the end of my night. The only thing that really annoyed me the whole night were these "FANS" who wanted everyone in the world, including poor lani, to know they were "FANS" (yes, capital letters, folks). They mouthed the lyrics to every song. Not just mouthed. They exaggerated every word. It was just really, really embarrassing. For them, I guess. I was embarrassed for alanis, and for them. Why would you act that way? I consider myself to be one of her biggest 'fans' (much as i hate that word) ever, and yet i could do nothing more than stand there completely awestruck. Why would you spoil seeing lani by making sure you were singing along obviously enough so that she could see? Good thing was, she never actually looked down at them. So ha. Anyways, that's enough for now! I'm sure I've bored the hell out of some of you..... ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 26 Mar 2002 18:28:35 +1000 From: Rebecca Appleton Subject: Re[6]: [oztori] conversation piece... Chem class was the most HILARIOUS class I had... in year 12. Cause I wasn't too bad at it - and wen't OK in the exams - the teacher really didn't care what my friends and I did... so we graffited a friend's text with the most sick/piss funny things ever. Through large amounts of wet paper towelling around the room and once when we were doing an experiment - they had this 'idea' of putting all the chemicals that we would be needing in this little wire basket - like those old milk-bottle holders - anyway we were a little bored so I chucked our test-tube contents down the sink and added a few of those chemicals... I think I mixed some sort of sulphur compound with the water sitting in the s-bend of the sink... it was the most vile 'fart-gas' around! - It stunk out quite an area ;o) My friend raised the ire of the chem teacher in one similar experiment, when we really couldn't be fucked what was going on - and the experiment had failed, the teacher came around to our bench and asked what did he think had happened in the reaction to cause we we saw... and he just said (ok this sounds silly now but it was funny then) he put a dog in it - the teacher was bewildered and then miffed. The expression on her face was priceless - cause the friend's response was so stupid, yet so... spontaneous - and he said it in such a dead pan way. Oh well - not that funny now, and the way I'm telling it - you just had to be there... ;o) The 'druggies' - the few that were in our class were periodically snatching the chemical equipment from up the back to use as bongs - you know... all that glasswear they have in the chem labs! ;o) > >> and >> having the teacher >> looking at me and my friend > >*gasp* you actually had one? ;) > > >Nathan. > >. >Yahoo! These sort of things happened in our chem lab too... things just got sooo out of hand half the time... but the 'fuckwits'/'tgs'/'jocks'/'morons' got thrown out - when the people who actually knew the stuff could stuff around all we liked - which annoyed the dickheads who were outside! Instead I used to sit writing notes in this girl's diary.. and discussing pistachio ice-cream with her (she worked in an ice-cream parlour at the time). I used to 'borrow' her Chemistry questions that we had to do and "summarise" them and submit them as my own ;) Well - stupid VCE - the teacher never read them or anything.. just made us flick through our books to see that we'd done them, and we got an "S" (Satisfactory). Its the 2mins of pure crap that goes on and on that is my problem with that song... as for it being just done like it live? - Ahhh..? no... it done live is (usually) quite stunning & breath taking. the album version (like most versions on the album) - lack... pretty much everything that comes across at a live show. dan. dan@danhirning.com www.danhirning.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 Mar 2002 14:27:34 +1030 From: "li-siren" Subject: [oztori] OT Mr. Nice Blatantly OT, but this just cracked me up way too much to keep it all to myself! http://www.columbia.edu/~sjt59/mr_nice.swf ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 Mar 2002 14:57:06 +1100 From: "Lavenda" Subject: Re: [oztori] Cassingleicious > "Partners in Crime" by Robbie Nevil and "Do Anything" by Natural Selection > are just two of them and it just gets worse from there! Aw, but 'Do Anything' was funky. And I always found myself singing it in biology (something to do with 'natural selection' me thinks ;) Any more threads like this and I'll be pulling out my tapes (I told you I was too cheap to buy cassingles didn't I?). "Knockin' Boots" and "16" just came to mind. Both which I recall got covered in a most crap way. Much like Wendy Mathews doing "If only I could". It was U2 in the other ear anyway, can't remember the particular song. Oh, and exchanging lists of lyrics with a friend to see how many we could correctly guess the song. Oh yes I was only talking about how awful that Wendy Mathews cover is the other night when I was watching some old videos I'd taped off Rage wif a friend - including Toni Pearen's "In Your Room" (!), Mick Jagger's "Sweet Thing" (!!!), and Girlfriend's "Bad Attitude" (!!!!!!!!!!!!!). My video collection even puts my cassingle collection to shame. Roozilicious wrote: > >Which 2 Mariah ones? Although 'Someday' at the time had the highest note ever commited to record on it at the time (well according to the American Top 40 or whatever I heard it on). > >>I think it was much more economical (and slightly > less > >embarrassing) to buy compilation CD's rather than > >umpteen cassingles at the time :) > > yes but by the time it was ona compilation i was > usally over the song in > question...
