I too usedta spend my 'hard earned' pocket money on cassingles back in the day (which is why my collection is full of such 'treasures' now) and muzak magazines. Though I was much more stingy with CD singles (bar ppl I collect) - $10 was (and still is) waaaaaaaaaaay too much for a damn single IMNSHO. I too am not one for buying cd singles other than absolute fave artists unless second hand, just looking I noticed 'the key the secret' by urban cookie collective. Now that I think about it, I changed the words of that to something else and that's probably why I bought it, but there is one mix on there with additional lyrics and flutes and stuff and is reminiscent in that respect of SIIS. Tis damn funky. Actually, I never even bought a SIIS single either... OOh, which reminds me, one time when I was working on 2NUR (Newcastle University's radio station) I found an album by the Reggae Philharmonic Orchestra which provided the strings on SIIS songs. I can't recall what I got instead (twins... you have to get exactly the same thing, just different colour, etc). I think our first cassettes were Sweet and Sour (soundtrack?) 'Takeaways' (mine) and Ghostbusters soundtrack (sisters). Flashdance and Fame followed closely after. Our first purchase (joint of course) was Michael Jacksons "Thiller". Can't figure out whether I'm shamed by that or not. I still have all my 'Hits Hot' 84/85 etc. Actually there weren't as many as I thought, but I was plobably thinking of sister's ones too. My first cd purchase was a Bob Marley box set. We didn't even have a cd player at the time!
