Has anyone noticed the number of "Baby's" Tori sings in these songs. Ohhhh the part where the 'instruments' cut out and its Tori singing "a little more fayth baby yeee oowww" is good too! Is YKTR better than SLG!?! Maybe Tori doesn't have to RE-RELEASE YKTR (although I don't know why not) but she could rerecord the album in her current 'style'!?! I do quite like the piano bits in Fayth.. and Tori does sound tres sexy - spesh when she rolls her r's after the "How do you keep the romance there when a little French Maid lives downstairs?" line. It always makes me snicker to myself recalling a review of YKTR in one of the earliest Take to the Sky fanzines, where the reviewer said something like.. "On the verses of Fayth, Tori sounds not unlike.. dare I say this.. Wendy James!" [singer of Transvision Vamp for those of you who don't know - they of late 80's fame]. > Has anyone noticed the number of "Baby's" Tori sings > in these songs. Yes - that was because I think Tori had a miscarriage just prior to recording YKTR, and so the frequent reference to 'baby' is merely Tori alluding to her miscarriage. (lol.. I'm "just kidding" here for those of you gullible enough to believe... in Dent forum-esque interp). Actually.. not too detached from reality.. Could Tori's line "But she couldn't keep Baby alive" in Spark be a reference to the failure of YKTR? I mean - practically every second word on the brill YKTR LP is "baby" - and she def. couldn't keep the band alive, could she? ;) And "maybe next I'll give Judas a try" could be a reference to "well, Y Kant Tori Read's style of music failed.. so maybe next I'll go one better and try and be Judas Priest" (old spandex metal rocker). I mean, she DID go and pen "The Underwear Is Black" after YKTR bombed.. before doing a full 180 and writing Little Earthquakes. > Is YKTR better than SLG!?! SLG ain't got a 'Fire On the Side' going for it... But then YKTR ain't got a 'Real Men' going for it either. I think... a really good album could be made from compiling the best tracks from SLG and YKTR.. and ditching the sub-par ones ;) "Y Kant Strange Little Girls Read", anyone? PLUS.. the YKTR outfit could be worn by one of the "SLG characters" ;) Tori wouldn't even need to think of additional costumes. > Maybe Tori doesn't have to RE-RELEASE YKTR (although > I don't know why not) Atlantic would probably do it if they could be arsed to release anything of Tori's properly. I thought it was "She's so FUNKY, yeah!" forever until I read the lyrics on line and saw that it was that (French for "games without frontiers"). Erm, Tori co-wrote "Party Man" (note: NOT a cover of the Prince tune from the Batman film ;) with him which appeared on the 1995 soundtrack to 'Virtuosity' (or something? Relying on memory here). But Tori didn't appear on the track. Wasted opportunity. > But maybe her next album will be some > isicathamiya or mbaqanga > beats (hehheh there's some words to look up). Shouldn't that be there're (as in 'there ARE') some words to look up? Since it's plural. Tsk tsk ennui not getting your noun-verb agreement correct.. I have seen some SHOCKING abuse of this in the local 'news'paper in just the past few days.. I think a national education campaign about this should be made. Nathan. . I have a question... on the word "commoner" not the noun but the ?adjective? I would always and have always written "more common" but since doing science and reading a few journals - I have come across an annoying lot of "commoner"s being written instead of "more common" when did this practice come into being!?! or has it always been accepted. It just sounds ludicrous and lazy. I HATE it. Even the frigging lecturers say it - that really isn't much when I had one lecturer spell family as famely (or something similar). What REALLY bugs me, is last night I was reading the Appendix E of the Lord of the Rings - about the pronounciation of names - especially those in Quenya and Sindarin - anyway I see Tolkien uses "commoner"! Arrrgh - does this give some legitamecy to the word? Did he really write this? Was it a typo by the publishers? I have seen a few spelling errors in the appendicies, especially Noldor (the high Elves) being written "Nolder" - there were a few others, but I can't remember them off the top of my head. Those could probably be excused, cause any proof-reader might catch it, since "Noldor" isn't exactly a common word. Andrew P.S. OK, do people here not like China?? or is it Mother?? I think Mother is fucking fantastic!! And so is China - but Mother is better. They beat the pants of 1000 Oceans, that is for sure. P.P.S. I have another question this time reguarding accents on letters. Can someone tell me what the different accents do? I'm pretty sure from doing French that the 'acute' accent creates the long vowel sound and the grave accent shortens the vowel sound. Anyway what does the circumflex do again? Then what about those other 'wierd' accents/letters. The A with the circle, what sound does the umlaut give letters (the two little dots)? In "Bjork" it's pronounced "Bjerk" isn't it. What about the 'beta' sign in german is it really a 'b' sound or 'fs' or 'is'?? What about the 'ae' dipthong - like in 'Encyclopaedia' and 'aesthetic' - I thought that this was more of an 'eee' sound - or is it just 'ay'? as in hay. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 23 Jan 2002 18:06:24 +1100 From: "riot poofter" Subject: Re: [oztori] YKTR - Nayth "On the verses of >Fayth, Tori sounds not unlike.. dare I say this.. >Wendy James!" (or should that be "I too"? ;) It's only listed as a noun in my "Pocket" (sic - I'd like to see anyone with pocket big enough to fit it in) Oxford Dictionary. I've never heard it used as an adjective. But then I "don't get out much". > Even the frigging > lecturers say it - that > really isn't much when I had one lecturer spell > family as famely (or > something similar). Well on one of my student placement assessment forms, the stupid bitch made not one, not two, but THREE spelling mistakes - "concious", "begining", and one other I can't remember. > OK, do people here not like China?? or is it > Mother?? I think Mother is > fucking fantastic!! 'Mother' is in my "top 4" Tori songs. I think it's def. the most emotional song on Little Earthquakes. Well.. sincerely emotional. China is a mite on the 'fake emotional' side of things ;) ...which is why I think people may have 'issues' with it. I think China is OK. I love the video to it (which some people seem to hate?). China is certainly better than 1000 Oceans anyway IMNSHO. It's just.. maybe.. a tad too much like something an 'easy listening' radio station would play. Maybe the China-bashers will grow to appreciate it once they hit 45. > And so is China - but Mother is > better. They beat the > pants of 1000 Oceans, that is for sure. Oh as does anything.. Even 'All the Girls Hate Her' and 'Over It' have better lyrics than 1000 Oceans ;) > What about the > 'beta' sign in german is > it really a 'b' sound or 'fs' or 'is'?? It's a double s. I don't think it's pronounced any differently than a normal s.. but I could be wrong since I only took one semester of German in Year 7 with a teacher who spent half of the lesson (plus) out of the room having coffee in the staff room. > What about the 'ae' dipthong - like in > 'Encyclopaedia' and 'aesthetic' - I > thought that this was more of an 'eee' sound - or is > it just 'ay'? as in > hay. The vowel-spelling system in English is STOOPID. There are 18 vowels (inc. diphthongs) in Aus. English, for which a mere 5 letters are used to represent.. and even then it's not consistent. The 'ae' in Encyclopedia is an 'ee', and in aesthetic it's a neutral 'schwa' vowel (like the 'e' in 'chicken' or the 'a' in 'above' - non-stressed and neutral). It's like that 'classic example' or whatever that appears in text-books - "fish" might as well we spelled "ghoti" for what it's worth ['gh' from 'enough' for 'f'; 'o' from 'women' for the 'i'; and 'ti' from 'station' fro the 'sh'].
