"The Underwear Is Black" was written b/w YKTR and LE.. and, as you could imagine from the title, more of a YKTR than a Tori Amos song. > Also, there is the one song off the original LE > demos - Learn To Fly (Nayth > feel free to correct me) or whatever it was called > that I don't think has > seen the light of day. Yep you're actually right. "Learn To Fly" was on a tape of early LE demos which Neil Gaimann should in theory have heard/have a copy of. But it's never seen 'the light of day' though. Nathan. . There's quite a few errors in it (not to mention the featured photo is from a different show), but thought you might like it anyway. TORI HAS FANS ON THEIR KNEES Tori Amos - Apollo, Manchster American singer-songwriter Tori Amos has always been a challenging and demanding listen - and last night's sell-out show was no exception. She first arrived on the scene in 1991 with Little Earthquakes, a captivating collection of songs which deal with subjects such as rape and prostitution. Her swooping vocal style seemed a little at odds with her material. Her infrequent live appearences were suitably intense affairs, but over five albums, she drew a large and loyal following. Last night was more love-in than concert - at the end, fans were kneeling rather than standing. If her aim was to make the audience feel they were in her front room watching her, she succeeded. She performed songs from her album Stange Little Girl (sic) - a series of oddball covers of songs by men. Accompanied by just a grand piano, all stops of her career were visited. The highlights were the hypnotic Caught a Lite Sneeze and Tom Waits' Time. As with all the covers, all its original characteristics had been excised. Her own stamp was indelibly marked on it, just as it had been left on a thoroughly entranced audience. - - Mike Barnett ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 9 Dec 2001 02:43:18 +1000 From: Becc Subject: Re: [oztori] Fw: Manchester review from the Evening News On Sunday, 9/12/2001 at 2:23 AM, Rachael Chrisp quoted: RC> Last night was more love-in than concert - at the end, fans were kneeling RC> rather than standing. How the hell did this guy ever get his job? Sounds like he wrote this whilst thumbing through a well-worn copy of 'So, You Wanna Be A Concert Review Writer?' and following every rule to the letter. Luckily, there were only about 5 people in the queue at the box office, so we didnt have to wait too long. The doors opened just after 7pm, and i managed to smuggle my camera in by putting it in my pocket. (worked for Tool, it can work for Tori too.) I got around the girl finding film in my bag by saying that i remembered film, but forgot the camera, which made her laugh. ;) We went to Merchandise then, and i bought a program, SLG Europe tshirt, and a choker. Oh yeah, there were also a tshirt for sale that said "Tori Amos 1991-2001" and had her discography on the back, sort of a retrospective. We went to find our seats then, and when Paul found them, i couldnt believe it, and insisted on asking one of the door staff to show us our seats. Sure enough, we were 5 rows from the front! (a big thankyou to Zac for helping me choose my seats). We were quite (shall we say) "amused", at the amount of "older" men who were there by themselves. Hmmmmmm. There were also quite a few older couples, some with daughters as young as 10! There werent nearly as many fanatical fans as there are at the American shows, luckily. Probably about half the audience were over 25/30. There were a few female fans that we found ourselves cringing at, however. Anyway, the support came on at about 8:30pm, his name was Ben Christophers, and i swear he had an Australian accent. Quite a nice voice, i think he covered PJ Harvey's "The River", as well. Tori came on at about 9:30pm. For those of you who don't know, i took my boyfriend, Paul to the show with me. Paul has *always* been anti-Tori, but i managed to convince him to come along. It was amusing to watch him go from arms crossed at the start to holding my hand and looking quite relaxed, mesmerised. :) Anyway, onto the songs. '97 Bonnie and Clyde - chilling as usual, i hadn't heard it since it was going around on the internet before SLG came out. Real Men - Tori came out wearing a pink sequined top (sheer at back), and satin flare pants, split at the knee with clear fishnets (i only noticed this when i was leaning on the stage later). Anyway, the song. It was a really great way to open the show, set the mood nicely. Silent All These Years- Really beautiful. At the "years go by" bit she had a pre-recorded adlib playing underneath. I think it was about here that she had a chat with us. She mentioned that "this city has a real vibe to it" and "look, i wore my party shoes" showing us her strap-y courts. She then went on to say that last night's Glasgow show was "intense", as the ghost of her Grandmother was haunting her. And then "do your Grandmothers hassle you like that?" to which the crowd cheered. Then she tells us a story about Mark bring home an Arsenal kit for Tash to wear. She refers to him as "Husband brings home". Tori says to him "what if she doesn't like Arsenal?" and Mark goes "She will". Someone at the back then yells out "Here in my head" and someone else "Precious Things!" to which Tori comes back with "What am i, a jukebox?" Everyone claps at that. She finishes with " the girls are all out the back trying on different outfits, so we'll just have to see which want to come to the party." Caught a Lite Sneeze - This was one of the better versions i've heard, really lovely. Cool On Your Island - Played on the keyboard, really beautiful rendition, people were screaming when they realised what it was. Northern Lad - i wasnt expecting this, and it really hit me, its always been a special one for me. she really emphasised the "fucking cold" bit. Here. In My Head - she introduces this with "lets give the girl her song", plays the first couple of bars, stops, looks towards backstage and goes "you do realise i've fucked it up for them now?" everyone laughs and she continues, very emotive. Sweet Dreams - She played this on the piano and the keyboard, both at the same time, which still amazes me, how she can do that. People were clapping along to it, and she finished it laughing. Raining Blood - The on-stage lighting went red for this, it wasnt too bad, it was quite creepy. Concertina - Again, this was played on both the keyboard and piano, really pretty, had people singing along, she changed a bit of the first chorus. Tori was swaying along with the music while she sang. Leather - brought a lot of cheers when the first few notes were played. She was writhering around quite a bit on this one, im sure the old men loved it. ;) She was really emphasising words and you could hear the mic cracking and hissing. Cruel - This was played on the Wurlitzer organ, and it took everyone a while to work out what song it was. It was totally stripped back, really pretty, a lot better than the "plugged" version. That was another thing i noticed throughout the show, she's lost a lot of the "roughness" in her voice on this tour, perhaps it was meant to be for the rock band image? Mother - one of the surprise additions, this got the most applause yet. i've never been a *big* fan of the song, but this won me over. Me and a Gun - could tell straight away what this was going to be by the way she was sitting. So could everyone else, the whole theatre went silent as soon as they saw her facing us. She sang it really slowly, hunched over, whispering parts, her voice breaking a couple of times. I think this was the song that really drew Paul in, i was waiting for sarcastic comments, but none came. Time - a good choice to follow MAAG with, it sort of relaxed everyone a bit, and led the way to the encores. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 8 Dec 2001 17:51:04 -0000 From: "Rachael Chrisp" Subject: [oztori] MY review (part 2) ENCORE 1 Tear In Your Hand - during the break, a lot of people rushed to the stage, but were pushed back by security, so they ended up *kneeling* in the aisle, right by our seats, so i thought "fuck it" and climbed over Paul to join them. i gave him the setlist id been writing and grabbed the camera. Anyway, the song. really good, ive always loved this song, and it certainly lived up to my expectations. Cooling - at this point, we all rushed forward to the stage, i managed to get right to the front leaning against it, as there were only about 10 of us there at that time. Tori looked over at us, smiled, and says "its okay, calm down, everything will be fine!" to which everyone laughed. Now, Cooling. Another song that seemed to take people by surprise, i was surrounded by crying boys! quite an odd experience, but by the end i was crying myself. I got talking to the guy next to me and he was all "she's played my favourite song now!" (the only two songs i wanted was Sugar and Take to the Sky) ENCORE 2 At the 2nd break, about 50 more people joined us at the front. Rattlesnakes - Tori played this on keyboard and Bose again, had everyone at the front singing along. Doughnut Song - This really shocked me, i had no idea she was playing this live. I really started crying during this, and she sang the majority of the song facing *us*. She improvised the "its over, its over" bit and added in the"come in Houston" part which had people puzzled, but i remembered the recent conversation on oztori about it. This was probably the highlight of th show for me. 1000 Oceans - i was expecting Doughnut Song to be the last one, so this was an added bonus. she played this on the keyboard, and i can understand now why Daniel and Roozi like it so much. ;) i was getting a bit concerned by this point, as id left Paul sitting by himself, and he didnt want to be there in the first place. At the end of it she came over to hug people, but didnt come to our side (we were in front of the Bose). :( I made my way back to Paul, hugged him, and then burst into tears. I havent cried at a concert since i saw NIN and became slightly hysterical during Hurt. Afterwards we made our way out and realised they were putting up barricades by the buses, so Paul asked me if i wanted to stay, and i was like "yes! are you sure you dont mind?!" at this point it was raining lightly and was about 1 degree (it was 11:00pm). i was surprised to hear him say "i dont mind", and we waited til 12:45am,when she finally came out, signed a few autographs, and left. i could only see the top of her head, but Paul was able to lean over and take some photos. i asked him what he thought and he goes "it wasnt bad", which for him means "it was good, i just dont want to admit it". whilst waiting for her to come out, we were entertained by an old drunk shouting "all this for some silly bitch who plays the piano" security werent doing much about him, just standing there with him. There were some American girls right at the front who really pissed me off, they knew Steve, Tori's guard bloke, and were all "Steve, steve, have a great tour" and "steve, steve, have a good journey" they were making me sick, theyd met her about 5 times already and wouldnt let anyone else get to the front. Anyway, we got a taxi back home at about 1:30am, and ended up paying #14 (about $40) for a 10 minute trip. So now i only have #10 left for food until Friday, so this should be fun. :/ But anyway, yeah. hope this review was okay. love Rachael xxxx ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 8 Dec 2001 12:19:25 -0800 (PST) From: Nathan R Subject: Re: [oztori] Oops I didn't know I couldn't talk about phallic bookworms!?! LOL..useless shiite I know... *ducks before flamage arrives* (whoops, accidentally typed dicks...hmmm...freudian slip there...) And I'm very proud that I didn't make it on to the most annoying person on OzTori poll...hee,hee, hee...I voted for Dan H...cos Dan you do post a lot of shiite... anyways...ciao all Dylan ------------------------------ End of oztori-digest V1 #286 ****************************
