Speaking of Oprah - even though it is self-indulgent pap most of the time I did happen to catch it the otherday - where it had on different immigrants and how they had come from places of dire hardship and made something for themselves in the US... I must say it was quite emotional - anyone catch it!?! A boy/young man who grew up in a small village in eithopia - was driven out with his family - he was 3... they trekked across the desert - to refugee camps in the sudan, where they lived for another 3 years - he nearly died. They eventually came to America - they knew no English... he basically worked hard and got accepted into Harvard (or Yale) and went on the make the commencement speech at his class graduation at Harvard. All that in 13 years. AMAZING! Or the lady from Cambodia where - you may have heard of the killing fields - - when the Khmer Rouge took over - they killed everyone that was a doctor or a scientist or a lawyer or a politician or an engineer - anyone that was educated... even people that wore glasses! How fucking horrific! She said that her and her 13 family members (not including her father who was taken) trekked across 200 miles of land-mine infested jungle to get to the thai boarder - ended up living in camps... her sister got to go to the US - and they were dumbed back in Cambodia - some how... after ending up back where they started they got a letter from the sister in the US, where they could all go and live there... but they again had to flee the country across those similar 200miles of jungle to Thailand - to begin with! The miracle is that they even GOT the letter - considering the country had no mail service and they (the family) was moving about the entire country! She is now an author in the US. She said that she had to save her allowance for months for the ability to just HIRE one book - she couldn't believe the amount of books when she got to the US. Yes... and then today's stories - how to get your life together and gain spiritual riches from differentiating between the things that you need and the things you only want... It was - *sniff!* - so moving! *wiping away a tear* :P The new style of the show, though, is what grated on me most. I have to admit the last time I watched it before today must have been in about 1998 or 99. The style of the programme wasn't half as ooh-look-at-how-inspiring-we-are then. I couldn't get over the mush surrounding each ad break, now: hideous overuse of soft-focus footage with a liberal dose of smokiness added around the outside... hmm. Maybe she genuinely inspired people > at one stage, but > how could she continue to do so now when the show is > so blatantly > cashing in on this reputation? Gawd that show is awful. I remember they used to have weekly shows subtitled "Changing Your Life" or something (??? I know it wasn't that, but something along those lines.. Oh that's it, "Recapturing your Spirit" or something). Pur-lease! The show is somewhat amusing though - you get to see what new depths Americans will stoop to on television - - eg. the couples having marital problems where they discuss their sex lives (or lack thereof) on TV and then some woman in the audience breaks into tears and gets up and says "the same thing is happening with my husband". God. I personally would think I'd end up with *more* problems over the embarrassment of having burst into tears on international TV. Also, you gotta love how when they have "musical" guests on (eg. Mariah, Shitney, etc), and they "sing" and Oprah pretends she's singing along to, but has no idea what the words are :) Plus she's the biggest hypocrite. If she's all for "loving yourself", then why does she feel the need to pile on all that make up, which still makes her look god-awful anyway? And then there's here weight issues - I remember circa 1994 she was having shows on her running marathons (supposedly), and how she was content now she'd lost all that weight.. and then she goes and stacks it back on. Oh, and I had to "LOL" @ the episode I saw a few years ago where people were talking about being "carbohydrate addicts". LMAO. I think everyone on that show is a "pseudo self-help addict". Oh, and Dr Phil and John Gray PhD just totally rock... Nathan. .
