Yes. You can usually upgrade the firmware to do this, though there is an element of risk here (you could permanently wreck your drive.) A good resource is http://www.firmware.fr.st/ I bought a Pioneer DVD-116 the other day, and upgraded the firmware on it so it's now region free, and had no problems. I vaguely remember reading something that says you have to set a region on your drive before you can make it RPC-1 (region free) There are some other drives out there that are either RPC-1 by default, or can have utilities available that allow the region to be changed an unlimited number of times/be disabled without firmware upgrades. The Asus drives can be made RPC-1 merely by removing a jumper. It's best to look up the websites of local PC shops, see what they stock, and then see if anything can be done with that drive. Not many new drives ship as RPC-1 by default. Plenty of old ones do though, and if you want to play dvd movies, then the old ones might be preferable, as they spin slower (less noise) Also, you either need a relatively grunty PC (nothing less than 400Mhz) if you want to use a software decoder to play movies, or you'll have to shell out for a DVD decoder card ($150ish) and that'll play dvd's flawlessly on a pentium 166. (You also need to make sure your decoder card is region free/changable too - see the digital ddgest guide at: http://www.digital-digest.com/dvd/articles/region.html ) Now that I've probably confused you, I'm going to piss off. I don't think Tori would have much say to be honest. Also, anyone who is anyone eventually has a 'compilation' of sorts.. why not for Tori? As much as you may hate the idea, it's probably a good way for people who may have heard 1 or 2 of her songs and liked them, but who don't quite want to risk buying a whole album of hers yet, to hear some of her stuff. That's how I 'got into' Kate Bush, f'rinstance. And if Technotronic and Ricky Martin can have Greatest Hits, Tori sure can too. > #2. Has anyone noticed a pattern of decreasing > number of singles with every > Tori Amos album? Now it's reached the point where > more than two months out > from the album release no one is even sure if there > will even be a single at > all! Yes have noticed this. Combination of record company not giving a fuck when it comes to promoting Tori, and possibly also Tori's lack of recording b-sides lately? I think the stoppage of UK singles is a main cause though.. back 'in the day' we used to get 2-part CD single releases with 3 new b-sides on each.. *sigh*. Also, blame it on the fucking success of Tori's Pro Widow remix.. Grrrrrrr gimme b-sides over remixes any day (unless they're shite ones like half the Boys For Pele bees - *obligatory BFP b-sides bashing for this e-mail*). > BTW, I wasn't aware there was a "1000 Oceans" single > release in Australia > (I'm sure there wasn't!). I was running late for work today (I was house sitting for my sister in the city.... slept in.... took me ages to get to work in peak traffic....) and I was 'fishing' for a tape to put on in the car, when I pulled out one of my Tori tapes. Well..... I noticed a few things; A) It'd been ages since I'd listened to a whole lot of Tori at once B) It'd been even longer since I'd heard Manha de Carnivale C) Tori really soothes the frustrated/irate/angry/furious/sleepy driver in peak hour traffic (damn trams... trucks... boom gates.... trams.... trams....) So, YAY! Tori Rulez : - ) Someone said... "Tip: They can't book you for going 10% over the speed limit. So keep it under that if you must speed." *makes game show noise for 'wrong'* It's up to whatever the police-person sets their speed camera to take the photo of, but there is a 6% margin for error on speed cameras. For radar, it shows the speed for any targeted car (ie: mine, for instance) and they can book you for whatever. And no, I didn't have a chance to see him - he was hiding on his motorbike in the bushes. Funnily enough, people who sit in the cars all day by the side of the road with the speed cameras aren't actually policemen - they're public servants now (well they are in Victoria anyways! Hmmmm... I really AM a good driver! However... if you do happen to see me charging down the road - don't say you haven't been warned *evil grin* ~Andrew~ ------------------------------ End of oztori-digest V1 #269 ****************************
