Is this a good thing for artists, or not? For the most part, bad I think. It will be entirely up to the artists to fund their recording and releases. Not so bad for someone who is used to it and has set herself up that way (eg - Jane Siberry) but in an interview I read with her, apparently her sales from her website/record company (www.sheeba.ca) are about 2% of what they used to be - as she runs it all herself, and is self funding, the only tours she does are small club tours of canada and the US, and there is very little promotion happening of the albums outside of her website and jane fans themselves going "yay jane" to people (eg - me and jason). but for major artists who aren't used to doing it all themselves it could be bad. but then they will probably hire people to do it for them - an advantage as they could be marketed the way they want rather than have to filter ideas through a record company. but even this is problematic as the artists may not know what will sell/what won't sell. also it will take time/resources away from the artist who is ordinarily focused on doing the music rather than having to promote and such as well off his/her own bat. also new artists would have to start from scratch which will mean a million little artists lying around the internet that a few people will see while the already popular people will just keep getting more popular because all the other people don't have the already established fanbase/public profile to keep the momentum in their career. >and most importantly, what is going to happen to cover art? *scream* NOOO!!! this will be up to the artists' personal tastes i suppose then - if they think cover art is important for that album (eg - slg artwork is almost necessary in the understanding of the idea behind it) then they would probably put something together. but again this would depend on their committal to the idea and the resources at hand. and whether anyone would buy it. >is this a good thing for consumers? or not? On one hand - it will be cheaper and (internet accessibility depending) easier to get hold of. On the other hand - the process of buying a recording will be dependant upon the technology they have at home - if you don't have a CD-R or portable MP3 player or a cable modem, then digital downloads are pretty much a waste of time. these people would be buying the actual CD - i think, until portable digital technology becomes amazingly cheap, CDs will still be the major force behind music sales. >Do you think it will ever happen? Soon? Its likely at some stage to become a larger option (Jane is already selling her out of print 1st album off her website as digial (sadly only mp3) downloads), but i don't think record companies have anything to worry about for a while. wow! some actual discussion! xoxo dan ;) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I Have a fish nailed to a cross on my apartment wall It sings to me with glassy eyes and quotes from Kafka. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ OzTori - http://www.oztori.org For all your Australasian Tori Amos needs. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 21 Nov 2001 15:22:30 -0800 (PST) From: Dan Stapleton Subject: [oztori] There's a frog on my tyre - --- AndrewR wrote: > At 16:05 21/11/2001 +1100, Lavenda wrote: > >Nothing is a sad as a burnt baby koala though. :( > Damn Ash Wednesday... > > > >X > >Lavs - --- AndrewR wrote: > > Woah Lavs... that came out of left field and hit me > square in the eyes! > OUCH! I have come so close on occassion whilst stopped at a red light (at an intersection, not a brothal), after having seen a smoker casually drop their cigarette out the window, to walk over, pick up the still lit cigarette and flick it back into the car saying "Here, you dropped this." Is it the caffeine? (You know you can buy no-doze tablets!) The image? Those oh-so-cute polar bear ads? Surely it can't be the taste -- the stuff tastes like *dirt*! I was only ever going to get one tattoo, and that was going to be it - - Tori's autograph somewhere on me (like on my hip or something). But then I ended up getting a small tattoo of butterflies on my hip instead. Of course, if Tori toured, maybe I'd consider doing this anyway... You know, another cool tattoo would be the first few bars of a song! I was trying to get hold of the Doughnut Song sheet music, but didn't find it before I got my sweet little butterflies. And guess what.... if you met me in the street, you would seriously not think I was the *kind* of person to get a tattoo. Of course, that would only be if you were the kind of person into sterotyping others. Each to his own.
