Science fiction writer Douglas Adams's unfinished final novel is to be published next year, according to reports. A Salmon of Doubt - the sixth episode of Adams's Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy series - will hit book shops next May on the anniversary of the writer's death, reported the Sunday Telegraph. The publication will reportedly be edited but remain unfinished following its recovery from files on the novelist's computer. Adams died suddenly in May in Santa Barbara, California, following a heart attack. He was 49. A Salmon of Doubt is said to have been found by his widow Jane Belson and his personal assistant Sophie Astin. Adams's novel was turned into a BBC series Adams is believed to have been working on the novel for almost 11 years. His agent Ed Victor told the Sunday Telegraph: "We have pored over Douglas's hard drive. There were so many different versions of the novel. "He would take it and then revise it repeatedly so there were many files. "As soon as he wrote anything he would say, 'Oh, God that's terrible'. He was a very, very self-critical author and so had a lot of trouble writing. He was a perfectionist." A Salmon of Doubt will reportedly be published as part of a collection of Adams's final writing, much of it previously unseen. The collection is said to include magazine and newspaper articles, lectures, writings from his website and his work with BBC Radio 4. It will also include the screenplay of the Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Adams became a household name when the cult science fiction novel was turned into a BBC TV series. His other novels included the best-selling titles The Restaurant at the End of the Universe Life, The Universe and Everything, So Long and Thanks for all the Fish and Mostly Harmless. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Nov 2001 08:56:52 +1100 From: Daniel G Subject: Re: [oztori] wowee another email! The BBC series was actually turned into the novel. It tells >you this in the introduction of the hitch hikers guide to the galaxy omnibus >(first 4 books in 1). Just thought I'd point that out :) Okay, if we're getting picky, it was actually the BBC RADIO SHOW that was turned into the novel which was then turned into the TV show. And, IMHO, the radio show is the far superior of both novel and tv show - although the novel is different from the radio play so can't really be compared properly. But don't get the old LP version - get the BBC release CDs - the LP is just a dramatisation of the book. In other trivia, I actually own the 7" single of Hitchhiker's Guide To the Galaxy "T.V. Theme". I found it somewhere for $2 and had to get it. >Apart from that, I'm looking forward to this release, even though I wasn't >particularly fond of Mostly Harmless. Although it doesn't explicitly say everyone died. But I was disappointed that, no matter how amusingly she disappeared, Fenchurch was gone. But I'm glad Zaphod went. he was annoying, and only good for the sequence in Life, Universe and Everything where he drinks a lot and watches trillian sit on her own lap. >Ever read "The Long Dark Tea Time of the Soul"? Now that one is good :) I prefer the first one (although it unashamedly rips off two of the Doctor who series' he wrote - City of Death and Shada). But the 2nd one does have its moments - the penguins, showering the gunk and the i ching calculator especially. okay i'm done raving about douglas adams now. xoxo dan ;) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Nov 2001 13:53:22 +1000 From: Holly Williamson Subject: [oztori] TORI RINGTONES Hey Folks.... inclusive of those who are adverse to 'Folk Music' - I may refer to you as 'folk', but this does not necessarily mean I endorse folk MUSIC. TORI AMOS - Under The Pink BJORK - Vespertine KATE BUSH - The Dreaming LISA GERMANO - Happiness (4AD issue) JANE SIBERRY - The Walking (canadian LP version) SARAH MCLACHLAN - Mirrorball (it has all my "omg yay" tracks off fumbling, plus some gems from surfacing. bummer about the lack of touch and solace tracks. unless i count the DVD. screw it, i'm counting the DVD - i need my "Vox"!) COCTEAU TWINS - Stars and Topsoil (it was hard to pick, so i had to go for their best of) THROWING MUSES - The Real Ramona PJ HARVEY - Stories from the City Stories from the Sea TORI AMOS - To Venus and Back (if i have to pick one disc - Orbiting) COLDPLAY - Parachutes this one i had trouble filling...either Bjork's "Post" or Jane's "When I Was A Boy". I just can't decide. of course I just use the CD case to carry my fave cds of the moment now...sometimes my faves ever just aren't the right mood. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Nov 2001 15:04:16 +1100 From: Daniel G Subject: RE: [oztori] TORI RINGTONES I programmed the intro to Father Lucifer on dad's phone once...then someone went and deleted it.
