Its only acceptable because so many people do it you seeee. Its "standard". It wasn't derived from an Italian word. Its from the French word "fort" or "le fort" which sounds like "for". So it really should be "le fort".. la la la. Shouldn't be an English word. Point is, if you say it, you're probably saying it wrong, but in my personal opinion its safest to go for "fort".
