LOL - the same thing could be said about the Sex Pistols imitating the Rolling Stones. Genuine talent? I think entry to the piano place qualifies for that - that and her 6 albums! (who > incidentally, i've never heard). Dan baby... (literally ;) j/k). Tori LIED. Here are a few select 'Tori on Kate quotes' to prove that Tori's a liar ;) from MUSIKEXPRESS/SOUNDS Magazine: About Hounds Of Love Tori says: "I love the second side of this album. I was in Los Angeles when I heard this record for the first time. I was hanging out in the rock chick scene. Thigh-high boots, gigantic amounts of hairspray, and everything. I had encountered nothing but rejection for months, nobody liked my piano stuff. And I was in a band that did something completely different. Then I found this record, and put it on, listened to side one, liked it OK, listened to side two, listened to side two again, and again, and again and again (sings): "You can't hear me, you can't hear what I'm saying, you didn't hear me come in, you won't hear me leaving." This turned me inside out. It changed my life. I decided to leave the man with whom I shared an apartment; I left the man I was living with because of this record." from KEYBOARD It doesn't matter how many chords you can bring into a song, but rather it depends on what you make out of every single chord. One of the best songs of this kind that I've heard in the past few years and that has absolutely no predecessor is "Running Up That Hill" (by Kate Bush). KEYBOARD: Many critics have compared you to Kate Bush. TORI: Yes, but I think that has nothing to do with my songs, just my voice. They hear these high sounds (sings) and immediately think of Kate Bush. KEYBOARD: But your song concepts are completely different. TORI: Yes, she works with other structures. But her songs are very original, and that's what matters. from BMG MUSIC CLUB MAGAZINE: "I'll never forget the first time I heard about Kate," Amos recalls. "I was playing in a club, I was 18 or 19 and somebody came up to me, pointed their finger and said, Kate Bush. I went, Who's that? I wasn't really familiar because Kate didn't really happen in the States until Hounds Of Love. I was shocked because the last thing you want to hear is that you sound like someone else. Then people kept mentioning her name when they heard me sing, to the point where I finally went and got her records. When I first heard her, I went, Wow, she does things that I've never heard anybody do, much less me. But I could hear a resonance in the voice where you'd think we were distantly related or something." So you were never influenced directly by her? "Well... I must tell you that when I heard her, I was blown away by her. There's no question." Did you sing along with the records? "Absolutely. But I knew that I had to be careful, so I didn't voraciously learn her catalogue. I left the records with my boyfriend at the time, because I didn't want to copy her." BMG: Now that you're playing music with a band, the comparisons to musician Kate Bush come up even more frequently. What do you say to those comparisons? TA: Those comparisons have come up since before I was 18. She's always been there. She came before me. You respect those who've come before you and she was great at what she did. I feel I took control of my record this time like she did too. When I walked into the studio the first day, I asked the engineers about all the buttons they had on their machines. "Do they do stuff?" So "stuff" was something I was ready to do. After "Boys for Pele," when I took the piano and harpsichord to the church to record, I knew I was ready for this bigger experience. Plus Tori recently said on an on-line chat that she has Kate's "The Sensual World" CD and had "The Red Shoes" but gave it away to someone. She was also photographed with her record collection in some magazine a few years back with Kate's "The Whole Story" best-of CD on display. Tori's also done a few lines of Kate's "Running Up That Hill" within her live version of the Cure's "Lovesong", and also within "Bad Company". I think Tori denied having listened to Kate around the time of Little Earthquakes because she was compared to her in pretty much EVERY review, and she still gets the 'Kate Bush copycat' thing today. As for not having heard Kate before, lil dan.. I guess you might be able to be excused since her last album came out when you were 7... lol. But you should 'check her stuff out' some day. FYI, IMNSHO (gotta love all these abbreviations), I think Tori sounds at her most "Kate-esque" on: - -the 'loaded' in "got all your crosses loaded" line of In the Springtime of His Voodoo - -the backing vocals of Doughnut Song during the verses ("you told me... over your shoulder... come in Houston"), and the "something's just keeping you numb" lines. - -the vocals Tori contributes to Tom Jone's "I Wanna Get Back With You" on the chorus. Very "Don't Give Up"-esque ;) - -the "I could have, I should have" lines of Icicle. Nathan. . Find the one for you at Yahoo! In about 96%+ of right-handed people, and 70% of left-handed people (plus a further 15% of lefties who have bilateral hemisphere language dominance), the part of the brain which comprehends language (Wernicke's area) is dominant in the left hemisphere.. and since lefties are perhaps better developed in their right hemisphere with some functions (well, writing at least), maybe they aren't as 'good' at picking up speech sounds they hear because the right hemipshere might not be as 'specialised' for this function as the left. As for my hypothetical "PhD".. I'll write a thesis that somehow incorporates you into it Jas.. Aussies & UK peeps tend to stress the first syllable - ie, the "A", and pronounce the second syllable as "moss" (ie, the stuff that rollings stones do not gather). Whereas Americans tend to pronounce the second syllable as 'mus', like the 'mas' at the end of Christmas. And it just sounds WRONG and too close to 'anus' IMSNHO. Oh and just a reminder about night people who want to see something that will be supposedly spectacular - I've done it the last few years... 3:30 am and later at 4:00 (but twilight will ruin the impact) the Leonids meteor shower (they are predicting a storm this year and next year - but next year there will be a full moon)... and anyway get up and watch this - two years ago I saw some spectacular "shooting stars" I know that at the same time two years ago the southern states had a lot of cloud cover. So Brisbane time 3:30am and to the north east and about 30 degrees above the horizon... in the radiant is the constellation of Leo - hence the name Leonids. LOL... Got a huge discount on a new doona and some blankets...something like $50 less than what it should have been!!!! Hee, hee, hee... Dylan >K-MART!?!?!?!?! The last time I looked at getting music from K-Mart I >realised they were stuck in the nothing ever falls below it's original >29.95 price. Bah. Is this some sort of special sale? new release cds are 20 bucks at kmart (top forty) and not normally more than 25 for anything else (unless a double) - they are very cheap, especially for singles. plus they tend to do what all big stores do and not mark stuff down at all until they decdie to clear it and make it extremely cheap... i recommend checking out your local kmart... > >Faithless - hmmmmm tell me if you are going to get any more copies I might >get one! let me know if you want one and i can get it ($15). don't know if they have more than one more copy, but i haven't decdide if i want one myself yet Roozi ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 17 Nov 2001 15:53:19 -0800 (PST) From: Nathan R Subject: Re: [oztori] Hello Mrs Crocodile (Dylan!LOL) Dylan Plant wrote: > Hee, hee, hee...couldn't resist!!! > > Just watched Tori doing the aforementioned song > (isn't that the coolest > word?) You could have got an even greater discount had you shoplifted the abovementioned (thought I'd mention a word you may like) items. As for muzak in K-Mart.. I've often wondered WHY they bother to order in all that stuff.. I mean.. WHO normally buys their muzak from K-Mart?! No, Nathan, I'm not left-handed, but a righty. However I wish I was of the sinister sort, as most left-handed people I know are the most charming and creative people due to their above-average use of the right side of the brain. This means that although, as you point out, they are not particularly adept at attention to detail, on the other hand, they do not spend their lives nitpicking at the more obscure points of grammar and spelling in a certain fan email list like *some* right-handed people whose company I ermm, 'enjoy' online.
