OK two things. I just caught a promo for next week's Leno and Conan on thecomedychannel and Tori Amos was mentioned! WOOHOO! I gather its a Leno performance? Anyone know which day? The second thing is I was at the local shopping centre yesterday and browsing through one of those book sales that are on tressel tables in the generally roomier areas of the 'malls' anyway I was flipping through a book on 'rock' like a guide or chronology of many many artists. (no it's not that black-looking book rock discography or what ever) this was (I THINK, I'm going to have to go back and recheck this) one of those DK books - it was paperback/novel size and a paperpack. It was quite thick and of course I opened to Tori (the book seemed to be released in 1999 and only had up to FtCH details. Basically it is a short chronology of each artist or band. I.e. had Born Myra Ellen Amos, born to Scottish/Cherokee Indian descent... Daughter of a methodist minister etc. etc. Baltimore yadda yadda yadda. Then I saw an interesting entry around 1996? about a single 'peaks in the UK charts at #48' a song "In the Clear" or something (I said I'd have to double check) and it's bee-side was a cover of ?? I think it said ?? A John Lennon song!?!? WTF is this release!?! Still, that's an odd way of putting it: "I believe in Christ but I'm not a Christian." (Goddamnit, I just wrote "christain" too!) I'd be more inclined to use the name 'Jesus' to express that sentiment: if you're not a Christian then you don't believe that Jesus IS the christ, so to call someone 'Christ' is a bit strange. If muslims see Jesus as a prophet and not their god's son, they wouldn't refer to him as 'Christ' either. I myself can say I believe there was a Jesus (Jesus scholars are pretty much certain of that, at least), but this Christ fella? Who's that? As far as I'm concerned, there IS no Christ. I believe that Jesus was Christ - aka Jesus Christ, and I believe that he loved us and died for mankind... but I'm not necessarily a christian. Because I believe that religion per se is the root of all evil.... My view of Christianity, Catholicism, Anglicism etc is that to be one, you must 'spread the good news'. However, I choose to quietly have my own beliefs and not really practice any religion at all. Sure, I pray sometimes but I still live my life the exact way I choose to, and that means drinking, smoking, having sex with people I love, making money, gambling, swearing, but also having my morals (live a good life, give to others, respect, don't kill or steal, etc etc.) Religion must be one of the hugest grey areas in existence, therefore, who can have the power to say what is right? And people who practice religion usually believe without a doubt that THEY are right... which is why I don't believe in Christianity or religion. I just don't. Just voicing my opinion here, because I CHOOSE to!! Love youse all! Is this just a > complete 'we've just pulled > this out of our arse to beef up the word count' or > is it a misplaced entry > maybe for Mori Tamos!?! OR have we/I never heard of > this? I'll tell you what it is: "In the Clear" was what Boys For Pele was originally going to be called, hence it being pressed on clear vinyl in 1996 (as the book correctly mentions). The publishes or the book just forgot to change the title from 'In the Clear' to 'Boys For Pele' on their databases, and hence this little boo-boo in the text. Secondly, as for this peaking at #48, there are 2 theories regarding this, both of which seem feasible explanations: 1) Boys for Pele is generally credited as peaking at #2 on the UK albums chart.. however, "the truth" really is that it only made #48... but East West managed to wrangle it around to #2, through paying out a large sum of money to the chart compiling company to give Tori the more prestigious peak position. 2) The chart researcher responsible for noting this seemingly incorrect position was participating in a research project investigating the effects of wearing special glasses that make everything appear upside down on printed numeral perception. The researcher, when consulting the printed chart archives, saw Boys For Pele listed at #2 in the Top 50, although since he saw it upside down, he thought that Boys for Pele was 2 up from the bottom, and hence noted that it peaked at #48 instead of #2. As for the John Lennon-credited 'bee-side'.. Tori has mentioned that John Lennon really should receive credit for writing Hey Jupiter, since his ghost apparently appeared in the mirror singing this song to Tori as she took a shower without turning on the fan. However, money-greedy Tori didn't want to hand over any $ to the alturistic Yoko Ono, so she decided to deviously leave Lennon's names off the credits... however, a handful of early promo copies of "In the Clear" (later renamed "Boys for Pele") managed to surface (they now fetch more $ than the original 'Baltimore' 7") which featured the correct (Amos/Lennon) songwriting credit on Hey Jupiter, which was originally featured on Side B (hence being a 'b-side) of the clear-vinyl record. OK, since I never got 'round to submitting my all-important 'review' of SLGs, this is what I think: Excellent: Real Men Rattlesnakes Time V.Good: Raining Blood Happiness Is a Warm Gun (I really like this now, 'k?) I Don't Like Mondays At first seemed scary but now I've become 'desensitised' (to quote a very bad/annoying Invertigo tune) to it: '97 Bonnie & Clyde OK: Strange Little Girl I'm Not In Love Fair: New Age Heart of Gold Crap: Enjoy the Silence > I need some emotion - where is my tape of Tori on > Letterman doing 'Time'. That 'twas a very nice performance indeed. I do wish Tori could sing that well *all the time* when she plays live. I KNOW THIS SONG! Memory is a powerful thing - this song takes me right back to 1983 (I have no idea when it came out) but I just remember it being played on the radio - and I have memories of our old home in Adelaide where we lived at that time. It's so wierd - I was only 3... but sometimes when I listen to this song I get taken back and can vividly see our house, and my room etc. etc.! Wierd huh!?! Apart from that the track by Tori is so fekking good, it's sorta like she's back to a sort of wierd cross between the feel of UTP and the FEEL of BFP - It's good to be back there! I just feel that FTCH and BFP were sort of barren albums - well some tracks... Enjoy the silence is a VERY FTCH feeling song... sorta fits around Liquid Diamonds. >> with '97 Bonnie & Clyde... > >NOVELTY. > Yes! I still think it's a good track - but it has no staying power - or maybe I heard it so much on mp3 I skip the track. It did freak me out though, when I first heard it. >there ya go Andrew, some nice agreeance for you! > >l'il dan Whyyy thankee l'il daaan! ;o) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 11 Nov 2001 22:11:01 -0800 (PST) From: Nathan R Subject: [oztori] Wanna go on a date? And wasn't Dan S born in Jan '86? Nathan - walking calendar with head full of dates (not the fruit). . That e-mail I wrote about Boys for Pele supposedly being called "In the Clear" was a load of BULLSHIT! lol. Although, there were two 'truths' in it - one highly dependant on whether or not you believe in ghosts: 1) BFP did make #2 in the UK 2) Tori did once claim that John Lennon's ghost appeared in the mirror and sang Hey Jupiter to her while she was taking a shower with the fan off... hence the very subtle and clever Beatles reference in Hey Jupiter - "your apocolypse was FAB, FOUR a girl..." if you change 'for' to 'four', as the Beatles were widely known as the "fab four". Plus.. John Lennon was shot in front of the Dakota building where he was staying... hence the "Dakota Version" remix of Hey Jupiter. But the rest I just made up... tee hee hee. Pity it's not April Fools' Day. Nathan. .
