My Day: Went to work. Watched as a colleague had balloons, ribbons streaming from the roof to her desk, cake and presents and sing-songs for her birthday. Someone politely came up to me after lunch and gave me a small packet of Maltesers and said "Happy Birthday". Work was busy. Frantic. Hectic. Came home for the obligatory family birthday dinner. It began with dad getting angry with me for turning Home And Away off. It ended with me throwing chicken at my dad and everyone laughing except for my dad. And now I've just read through seemingly a million emails (haven't read them since Thursday), and all I can remember to comment on is: Yay lets get Tori on #1 for Net50!! Remembering, I guess, once she's signed to a new label they'll be paying attention to her new album's effect as to where they'll decide to tour for her next one. I mean, c'mon, how hard can it be? And what harm could it do? YOU KNOW YOU WANT TO!!!! (whether you realise it or not, I've decided you do). Ummm... Rachael was drunk? That's something out of the ordinary!! Did anyone tape the Bjork/Sugarcubes/Garbage thing on Rage? Speaking of rage, I was asked whether I was going "raging" for my birthday on the weekend!!! Hahaha.... and yes, I did reply "yep I'll be ragin' fer suuure!" ummm... that's all, I have to consume a bottle of wine before my friends come over to play pool! Shit! And have a shower! Oh my! Speaking of movies to watch on DVD's.... Run Lola Run - can't beat it. What a supercalafragalisticexpialadocious movie!! I forgot yesterday to tell you all that I went and saw A.I. on Saturday night. I went on my own... and I could hardly believe it, but I cried my little eyes out from about a quarter of the way through, all the way to the end!!! And then, when the credits were rolling, I just sat there in the cinema on my own, fucking sobbing my heart out, and then after the movie when I was walking to my car, my mum called me and I started bawling AGAIN!!! So I'm just wondering... did anybody else get affected like this during that movie? I couldn't believe how upset I was!! It must have really hit me somewhere that it didn't hit many others, because everybody I've spoken to who saw the movie couldn't understand why I cried so much. I suppose I was just really emotional. Anyway, bottom line, obviously the movie is a good one, but I don't know if I ever want to see it again. So go and see it, if you haven't already. "Miss Whack, I'd like to get a $30,000 loan to take a holiday" Pattie looks at the frog in disbelief and asks his name. The frog says his name is Kermit Jagger, his dad is Mick Jagger, and that it's okay, he knows the bank manager. Pattie explains that he will need to secure the loan with some collateral. The frog says "Sure. I have this" and produces a tiny porcelain elephant, about half and inch tall - bright pink and perfectly formed. Very confused, Pattie explains that she'll have to consult with the bank manager and disappears into a back office. She finds the manager and says, "There's a frog called Kermit Jagger out there who claims to know you and wants to borrow $30,000, and he wants to use this as collateral. "She holds up the tiny pink elephant. "I mean, what in the world is this?" (you're gonna love this...scroll down) The bank manager looks back at her and says.......... [where] Worldwide [contact] Mclibel Support Campaign ++44 207 713 1269 [email] info@mcspotlight.org [web address] http://www.mcspotlight.org - ----\\ [the full rave] file://---- McLibel Support Campaign CALL FOR ACTION ON TUESDAY OCTOBER 16th - WORLDWIDE ANTI-McDONALD'S DAY The 17th annual Worldwide Anti-McDonald's Day will be on Tues October 16th [UN World Food Day] - a protest against the promotion of junk food, the unethical targeting of children, exploitation of workers, animal cruelty, damage to the environment and the global domination of corporations over our lives. Last year, as always there were local protests all around the globe, involving most of the countries where there have been regular events in the past - of particular note were the widespread and large protests throughout Italy (eg at one store in Rome 300 demonstrators succeeded in getting it closed for the day). But last year also included demonstrations in Hawaii, Hong Kong, Phillipines and Colombia. As part of the global protests, there were also some events on Oct 12th - an annual day of solidarity with McDonald's workers. [In 1999 we monitored where the protests took place - we heard of 425 protests and pickets in 345 towns in 23 countries: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, England, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Malta, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Portugal, Romania, Scotland, South Africa, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, USA]. Over 3 million leaflets have now been handed out in the UK alone since 1990 (when the McDonald's Corporation served libel writs aiming to suppress the London Greenpeace leafletting campaign) and it is now distributed worldwide. Despite its strenuous efforts, McDonald's is widely despised, and its 'reputation' - along with that of the food industry in general - continues to sink ever further. As well as the mass distribution of leaflets by thousands of local activists around the world the global campaign against McDonald's has continued to grow over the last couple of years: - - many determined residents' campaigns against new stores, including a successful 552-day occupation of a proposed McDonald's site by residents of Hinchley Wood, S.E. England - - mass anti-McDonald's protests by french farmers, including a 30,000-strong demo - - new efforts by McDonald's workers to organise together to stand up to their bosses (eg. in the UK, France, Russia and Canada) - - protests at the Sydney 2000 Olympics against McDonald's mass use of refrigeration chemicals linked to global warming - - an international scandal over extreme labour exploitation in China for the production of McDonald's 'happy meal' toys - - a wave of complaints calling for a ban on their advertising to children - - protests throughout the US and elsewhere focusing on the cruelty suffered by chickens raised for McDonald's products - - growing concern throughout Europe and the US about the threat to human health posed by beef-related diseases (such as BSE) and genetically-modified animal feed - - McDonald's increasingly identified by a wide range of protestors worldwide as a symbol of modern capitalism - - recent fall in their global profits and corporate plans to close 250 stores And there's been continuing bad publicity for the Corporation as a result of the McLibel case, the longest in english history - including the collapse of McDonald's censorship attempts and some damning legal rulings against the company: exploiting children with their advertising strategy, deceiving consumers by claiming their food is nutritious, promoting food linked to a greater risk of heart disease, paying low wages and being responsible for animal cruelty. The McLibel defendants, Helen Steel and Dave Morris are currently taking the British Government to the European Court of Human Rights over oppressive and unfair UK libel laws. - - McLibel Support Campaign - ------------------------------------------------- Further information: www.mcspotlight.org contact details McLibel Support Campaign 5 Caledonian Road, London, N1 9DX, UK.
