To my long lost friends at Oztori, Hello! I decided to come out of the woodwork when I read Holly's email. She made me realise how much I miss posting to this list, and then Mark Endacott emailed, so I thought, okay... I have been meaning to for a heck of a long time, but then lots of new people appeared on the list and I got all shy! Anyway, my name is Helen and I think I first joined the list three or four years ago. I was known as 'Spacedog Hel' -I'm not sure if I should still keep that name, but you can just call me Hel if you want! Please forgive me for this epic email, but I've had severe withdrawls and there are lots of things I have to tell you. My English has also gone down the tube a bit, as I have been living and working in Japan for almost two years teaching English. So, I hope I can write something readable. Here goes! First of all, welcome back Holly and Mark and hello to everyone I haven't 'met' before. I actually come from Melbourne, but I moved to Tokyo for work. I'm having such an exciting time here, and will probably stay for another couple of years. Unfortunately, I don't have enough time to regularly check my emails, as I don't have a computer and the internet cafes here are rare and pricey. I will try to post more, but if I don't, please understand that I'm sill here. I'll be 24 on the 1st of October and SLG has been a lovely early prez. Anyway, it's lovely to be posting again. I am listening to SLG right now and I really love it. I bought it from Tower Records, though they only had one cover, which was 'Happiness'. It wasn't my first choice, but I was so eager to hear it that I bought it ayway, and 'Happiness' is one of my favourites, so... I saw the 'Strange Little Girl' and 'Raining Blood' covers in Virgin yesterday, but no sign of 'Time'. I would love the 'I Hate Mondays' cover, but that will have to wait till I get back to Oz I think. My boyfriend and my co-worker regularly sing 'I Hate Mondays' at karaoke, so when I read that Tori was covering it, I was more than interested in hearing it. The original is much faster, and I don't think you really take in the lyrics properly. When I heard Tori's version, I was very teary. I think it's eerily beautiful (if there could be such a thing!). We sang it again the other night, but I found it really hard. A lot of the bands/artists that Tori covers on SLG are in most karaoke songbooks, but the songs are different. The ones I've seen, (but not sang) are 'Happiness', 'Heart Of Gold' and I'm Not In Love (I regularly sing this one!). Just a bit of karaoke insight! Anyway petals! Here are my favourite strange little girls: 97 Bonnie and Clyde: I haven't heard Eminem's version, but I don't think I want to! Tori's voice is perfectly haunting here. At first I didn't know what to make of it, but then I listened to it through headphones, and I got a very ticklish chill up my spine! I do wish there was more piano in the song -I can imagine what it might it sound like. But, at the same time it's kind of interesting to listen to it and strain your ears to try and hear more piano. My mind started inventing more piano, cos in the beginning I was getting really frustrated! Strange Little Girl: This was playing in the Virgin store yesterday - they have 'Virgin Radio' which I think originates from America, but occasionally they play J-Pop (Japanese Pop music). I was actually leaving the store, but I had to stay! They also have SLG on display at the little listening areas - - very exciting! Every time I've been in, someone's been listening to it and it makes me feel tempted to chat with them! I voted for the song at the Net 50 site a few minutes ago ;) I'm Not in Love: Interesting sound! I have Olive's album 'Trickle' which also has a fantastic cover of it, but I do like Tori's version too. It is a bit of a nasty song, hey. It goes well after 'Enjoy The Silence'. I have Depeche Mode's 'Violator' album and I think the version on that is also quite nasty. Rattlesnakes: I'm obsessed too! One of the best things about Tori is that she sings her own backing vocals. She has such a beautiful, versatile voice and I'm so glad she uses it. I love what she's done on this song too. I even have a friend called Jodi! I'd love to hear the original. I've seen Eve Marie Saint in a few old movies, but I definitely remember her in 'North By Northwest'. Ask your dad about her!! 'Time': I have yet to hear Tom Waits, but Tori's Time is beautiful and melty.... Please read the reviews given on The Dent about Tori's Time performance on Letterman if you haven't already. Made all teary again. 'I Don't Like Mondays': As I said before, I didn't really take in the lyrics at karaoke, but after a first listen to Tori, it hit me pretty hard. The version at karaoke has a lot of piano in it, so I just assumed Tori would play lots of it in her cover, but I just love the keyboard in it -for me, it's more fitting for this project. 'Happiness Is A Warm Gun': Wow. This song probably gets inside my head the most and fulfills Tori's pupose for the album (for me I mean). I imagine the image of the Happiness character (especially at the start of the song) just sitting in my lounge, casually watching me, knowing that I'm taking it all in. She doesn't say a word, but then she doesn't have to. It's almost like she's reading my mind, and she might even raise her eyebrow at me, her head cocked at all times and leg crossed over. I read the article in 'Alternative Press', and in it, Tori mentions that Mark David Chapman told the escort to 'be silent'. I undertsand the character so much more, and I think she's my favourite. I absolutely ADORE the piano in the song. The first appearance of it is just so delicate and hair-raising! Very evocative in my mind. Goodness, I hope everyone is still awake! I've babbled on so much... Ah well, it's all in the name of Tori and her only mailing list in Oz! I hope I didn't leave anything out... Anyway chickens, I better sign off/out but thanks so much for reading and I hope I can post again soon. I love reading everyone's mails, but unfortunately I've missed a few cos Hotmail just goes ahead and deletes half my account! :*( Take care of yourselves and remember Ghandi: 'An eye for and eye only makes the world go blind'. sayonara for now, Hels xoxoxoxox _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Sep 2001 00:30:39 -0700 (PDT) From: Natty Subject: Re: [oztori] World's Biggest Hug for Peace LOL!!! Once you get used to it (well, I had to get used to it) SLG is a GREAT album. I spend this afternoon working out guitar chords for "Rattlesnakes" and "Heart of Gold". RATTLESNAKES : Verse - G / Am-C (one or other or both, not sure) Chorus - G / Am / F / Am-C (probably C here) HEART OF GOLD : G / D / Em just repeated all the way through over and over again...it doesn't sound all that crash hot playing solo...I need another guitar and four arms to play the other bit (which is, incidentally (note picking i mean, not chords): G A B D/E (slide up D to E) G A B G/E (slide down to E) just repeated over and over. Titled "utopia", the song is "shared in the spirit of wanting to offer comfort to everyone who is grieving, with my experiencing my own grief alongside them." UTOPIA will be available as a free stream via a link at her website www.alanismorissette.com, as well as at Maverick Recording Company's website www.maverickrc.com/alanis. "I wanted to offer as much love as I possibly could in the form of music, which is one of my favourite ways of expressing myself." Alanis is quick to add that "a four minute song cannot possibly touch on everything I'm feeling right now, and certainly not cover the broad scope of everyone else's feelings. Knowing that it may provide four minutes of comfort to anyone at this point inspired me to share this song. I believe this song shines light on both the willingness to understand as well as the passionate desire to stand up and show a self-care and self-respect in the face of something many strongly don't believe in." Alanis adds, "I believe this is a hugely defining time for us as human beings. This is the most intense version of adversity that I have ever experienced in my short lifetime. I believe we live in a relative realm and that it is in the face of what some are calling "evil" that we are able to know ourselves as peaceful, transcendent and willing to contemplate the motivations for doing what happened on Tuesday. We have been given the opportunity to define ourselves in accordance in any way we choose. It is my hope that the people who are making the decisions about how to respond to Tuesday's events will take both self-care and compassion into account with consciousness and awareness of our interconnectedness as beings." Well, the credits on SLG read: "music arranged and played by John Philip Shanale (strings guy), military drum: Matt Chamberlain, vocals: Tori." NO mention of a Bose at all. From the credits, it reads as if Tori had nothing at all to do with the song musically - she just 'sang' it. As for the harmonium in HJ LP version - I find that easy as pie to hear, so I don't know what you're talking about... "As usual" ;) Nathan.
