Hey all, found this on the Dent: http://www.thedent.com/citylife01.html I've taken a few interesting bits out Blatant ripoffs of reliable brands only go so far. If you're going to nick material from artists who did all the grunt work back in the day, at least put your own stamp on it. Better yet, steal it, and try to make it your own. Tori Amos has done just that, on what may be the mostambitious album of her career. The Cornflake Girl's Strange Little Girls is, on the surface, an album of cover songs. Now, before you can say The Spaghetti Incident, keep the following in mind: Amos has taken 12 songs, all written by men, and performs them from the perspective of a female, as a way of understanding the male point of view. The Beatles' "Happiness is a Warm Gun," for instance, is transformed from the Fab Four's blues-pop stomper,to a 10-minute, soundbite-sampling journey into Second Amendment dementia. So what's the chick angle? According toAmos, Mark David Chapman allegedly conversed with a call girl before murdering John Lennon; "Happiness" is that escort's vision. "Heart of Gold" (the only song voiced from the viewpoints of twins) "I Don't Like Mondays," almost belies the song's original meaning: The real-life, pre-Columbine account of aSan Diego girl who open fired at school. But, in fact, it's almost more heartbreaking the way Amos delicately delivers it--as an officer discovering the slain high schoolers. Here, she not only progresses as an artist, with her vast instrumental tinkerings, but reshapes pop tradition as well. Done by another artist, the project would have likely failed. With Amos at the helm, it's the most daring and intriguing album of the year so far. ===== The STRANGE LITTLE GIRL net50 voting Campaign... Simply go to the following url and fill in the details. I'd love to know!! How can any one tori fan be a nasty person? I don't get it... enlighten me. A little while ago, Mr Horan was a member of the list, and of the #ozTOri chat channel. After being removed from the list for abusing people et al, and after, I believe all of his email addresses were removed, he still wouldnt take the hint. #OzTOri was originally registered, I believe. The channel management moved from I believe Dan, to Celeste (raspsugar), and because of Mr Horan's actions, Celeste handed the channel over to myself. After just about everyone on the channel at the time copped abuse from Mr Horan, the channel all but died. Then, in his infinite wisdom, Mr Horan decided to have one of his IRCop friends deregister the channel from my name, and register it in his own. This really did kill the channel, because after all his bullshit, nobody wanted to chat there again. I dont know, and cant quote what he said, but I do remember the stuff being particularly nasty, and hurtful. So, as far as having him back... I think you'll find that a lot of the original members of the list/channel, dont want him here. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 24 Sep 2001 18:52:27 +1000 From: "nina riddel" Subject: [oztori] is the new garbage song crap or what? can someone with extensive ben folds knowledge (dan H?) tell me - is Rocking the Suburbs any good? also - did anyone in brisbane tape letterman? i'm seeing jason and zac (?) tomorrow - if either of you have it, please bring a copy, i'll buy you a tape - and anyone else in brissy, call/text me 0438782625! ta (tata) ninaR _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 24 Sep 2001 01:59:40 -0700 (PDT) From: Nathan R Subject: [oztori] Good vibrations Zac "honest I'm not trying to get you in the sack" (it rhymes, okay?)
