I mean, if they've had unprotected sex they should NOT be allowed to donate (neither should straight people) because they are at risk (higher than straight people, yes), but just because you have "male to male sex" doesn't mean you have unprotected sex! If the question was "have you had unprotected sex in last however long" that would not be discriminatory. But you CANNOT get AIDS from having anal sex with a condomn on! (if i'm wrong about this, let me know). that's why it seems homophobic. Gay men are denied the opportunity to help others even if they take every precaution str8s take! It does have one major flaw, wherein homophobia is expressed. FACT: Gay men who have unprotected sex are in a high-risk category for AIDS and other diseases. This much we concur. It is undisputable scientific fact. CONCLUSION: Gay men should be prohibited from donating blood. WRONG! Not all gay men engage in unprotected sex. Even you seemed to agree with this when you said: "I do, however, believe that the policy should be changed to allow gay men to be able to donate who haven't had UNPROTECTED sex in, say 2 years or so, as the current policy is harsh, and, unfair." (my emphasis) But the rules are that gay men who have had any sort of sexual contact cannot give. Whereas a straight person who has slept around with a different person each night for the past 15 years of their life would still be allowed to donate. Gay men who engage in protected sex are at lower risk than straight people who have had unprotected sex. Therefore the questions should NOT be based on sexuality, but rather on sexual conduct. i.e. rather than "Gay men cannot give blood", the rule should be "People who have had unprotected sex cannot give blood". The reason that this is a manifestation of homophobia is that it makes it appear that gay men are on the whole more casual and careless about their sexual encounters, as well as being more promiscuous. Just like black people are stupid. It breeds a negative attitude, which despite having its origins in some supposed 'truth', is really quite offensive to us honest, hard-working, monogamous, safe-sex-practising gayboys. That's all. You know nothing about me. But here's my two cents on Tori and her new album. This might help y'all get to know where I stand and what I feel. I really like the album. Sure she didn't write the album but I think it's in many ways her most accessibly personal album. Previously I've found she makes her lyrics deliberately obscure to hide certain things and confuse people (eg. Mr Zebra, "ice-cream assassin" - love them but you've gotta admit, at first you went what the ****?) So I really like the fact she's put her stamp on songs that have made HER sit up and take notice and have in some way effected her. So I think it's very emotive and touching. I love the artwork! I love its simplicity and I love her different looks. I love the simple Neil Gaiman quotes. They're so enigmatic, leaving you wanting more but are so perfectly independent in their own right and sum up the characters beautifully. Track by track: 1. NEW AGE - I love this! It's so chilling (especially with the whole NY thing... going to NY to pursue your dreams). I especially love the second chorus where you expect it to build and get louder but it doesn't. Instead it gets softer and you just her singing really high in the background. 2. BONNIE & CLYDE - Sexy and spooky! PJ Harvey's The Wind meets Psycho. She really brings the song to life in all its disturbing glory and I think in many ways, this song works best on the album in what she was trying to achieve. It really sounds terrifying to hear a woman saying these things about herself. 3. STRANGE LITTLE GIRL - Nice. Bit like Bliss. Nice. Won't change your life but it's good to listen to. 4. ENJOY THE SILENCE - Love it! Never realised how horrible this song was. It perfectly sums up those relationships where the words just get in the way. 5. I'M NOT IN LOVE - Great! I love the way its stripped back and almost a mantra. The Neil quote for this one rocks totally. 6. RATTLESNAKES - My highlight. Just perfectly done. 7. TIME - Love Tom Waits and I think it suits her voice perfectly. I'd almost love to hear them do it as a duet. The bit where sings about the dish filling up with rain really gets me. 8. HEART OF GOLD - A much needed rocky number. I love the way it just screeches and goes off. Though I can't quite get what she's trying to do in terms of character with this song. 9. I DON'T LIKE MONDAYS - I like this though I love the original so much more. It's a nice simple arrangement and the lyrics really resonate being sung the way she sings them, especially now more than ever. 10. HAPPINESS IS A WARM GUN - I find it hard to get through this. It's a fantastic idea! Great use of samples! But it's way too long and boring. I do love the bit where she moans "gun" and a very typical bit of Chamberlain drum work comes in. 11. RAINING BLOOD - Like HIAWG, love what she's trying to do but don't like listening to it. 12. REAL MEN - This is such a nice surprise! Just when you think the album's over, she produces a real gem! I really saw this as being a song attacking men though so I'm not sure why she's singing it but hey, it's Tori. So there you have it. Love the album. I'll list my fave Tozza albums in order (which will probably incur the wrath of everyone on this sight but at least I'm being honest, right?) 1. Strange Little Girls (this may change... it's new but I really really like it) 2. FTCH (It was the first one I bought so...) 3. BFP 4. UTP 5. TVAB 6. LE Probably way different to the rest of ya but it's just me. TK http://travel.yahoo.com.au - Yahoo! Travel - - Got Itchy feet? It is an aid organisation - their symbol is the Red Cross in predominantly Christian countries. It's sister organisation is the Red Crescent in Predominatntly Muslim countries. You would have to be registered/have permission otherwise anyone could go around and collect money in the name of 'the Red Cross'. Reminds me of those callous fuckwits in the US, scamming elderly people via telemarketing to send money for the Terrorist attacks relief effort! What fucking few sodding shits are out there just to make a quick buck. I think the police are ARRESTING these letches. Yes, I do agree. I think the problem stems from the fact that the policy has never been reviewed since it was first put in place. I am sure i did mention in an email that those that have had protected sex should be allowed to donate... - or at the very least, those that have not had male-male sex in the last couple of years. dan dan@danhirning.com www.danhirning.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Sep 2001 00:25:28 +1000 From: Daniel Hirning Subject: Re: [oztori] homophobia Sunday, September 16, 2001, 7:24:58 PM, Jason wrote: JC> Just to clear things up: to be honest, i didn't even read past the first paragraph... whatever. dan dan@danhirning.com www.danhirning.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Sep 2001 00:32:09 +1000 From: AndrewR Subject: [oztori] Has this happened to anyone before!?! Hmmm.. I must admit I thought most of the Tori videos were crap. lol. All this bizarre (essentially stupid) imagery. The only ones I really liked were the choirgirl videos. Even though we discussed the COrnflake vids (UK or US versions) as to which one was better, I think at the end of the day they were both kind of crap. I used to imagine what the Tori videos would be like because I hadn't really seen any prior to buying the video collection, and I must say I was very disappointed. I like them because I like the music and I like Tori, but at the end of the day.. eek. I thought Talula was particularly disappointing, it had so much possibility. [Actually in all fairness I think "Hey Jupiter" is good. Not as good as "Spark", but good none-the-less] I still really like the Professional Widow (remix) video - and it was just a heap of the other videos thrown together kind of recklessly. It still worked better than the average "premediated" Tori video. I mean who sits down and says "Oh I know.. let's have Tori in a suit rolling around on the beach"? LOL And as for the Venus videos.. hehehe.. someone no doubt pulled in with their videocam and said "we have half an hour and 50 cents to shoot this video!" >Care to send me an mp3 of this? ;) I have the >Butterfly/Hyperballad (well, it features about TWO >lines of Hyperballad right near the end - *hardly* a >"medley") one, but not the one with Blue Skies in it.. >unless I just haven't spotted Blue Skies within said >"medley" (sic). Perhaps "medley" (sic.. lol. I can't spell, give me a break) is not the right word. But she just goes: "Pretty pretty garden, pretty garden yeah And so I go through the years so I could be happy happier to be.. blue skies, blue skies in my mind, blueeee skies Pretty pretty garden, pretty garden" towards the end. Ok well this is what I hear, it could be wrong. It is a pretty bad bootleg. But it has potential. Another thing I'd love to hear is God solo on the piano. Like in the aptly named "All things considered" Medley. >> One wonders if you were an Arab in America right now >> if you wouldn't >> hope to be included on a Phil Collins sampler... Hmmm.. has no one heard the Rosie O'Donnell interview? That was my bit of humour for the day. >A> What about Tori's interview Last Year?? With Caroline Tran... I loved that interview. Actually at the time I was sort of wondering why they were letting Caroline Tran talk to Tori.. hehe.. she just didn't seem competent enough. Bring in Kingsmill already! Is he still on the J's? I never listen to it anymore. But yeah I liked that interview, where Tori spoke about how the "quality of the wine doesn't change". And just for the record, I do like Caroline. I just thought she wasn't quite music guru-enough to be talking to Tori. >Apparently it's also on the 'Party of Five' >soundtrack. I love the way Nathan says "apparently". Like he doesn't own it. Like it doesn't sit proudly in his collection with his "Songs From Dawson's Creek" volumes one and two. :P Well I'll be jiggered. This email is full of Tori content. I'm tempted to include a Siobhan quote just to break it up a bit. lol Non-Tori content: My headphones have a strange buzz coming from the left hand side and it's getting on my nerves.
