Subject: [oztori] Singer Aaliyah, seven others killed in Bahamas plane crash Aaliyah was in Melbourne recently filming her role in the new Vampire Chronicles film "Queen of the Damned".... MARSH HARBOUR, Bahamas (AP) - R&B singer and actress Aaliyah died when a small plane that was to carry her and eight others back to the United States crashed after takeoff in the Bahamas, authorities said. Eight were killed in Saturday's crash, and one critically injured man was flown to Florida for treatment, officials said. ``We find it devastating and most unfortunate that after having this world-famous star Aaliyah and her crew select the Bahamas as their choice location for her latest video, the project has climaxed on such a tragic note,'' said Minister of Tourism Tommy Turnquest, who happened to be visiting Abaco Island, where the plane went down. Aaliyah's song ``Try Again'' earned her a Grammy nomination for best female R&B vocalist. She made her feature acting debut in the film ``Romeo Must Die.'' Bahamian national television quoted the civil aviation department as saying Aaliyah was among nine Americans on board. The private plane was leaving the Marsh Harbour airport on a trip to Opa-locka, Fla. when it went down Saturday evening, said police spokesman Marvin Dames. Abaco Island Chief Councilor Silbert Mills said those killed included two women and six men. Islander Derek Russell, who worked for the group during the video shoot, said he got the artist's autograph before the accident. ``She's a nice girl, a friendly girl,'' he said. The cause of the crash was unclear. Kathleen Bergen, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration in Atlanta, said the plane was a Cessna 402 owned by Skystream, a company based in Pembroke Pines, Fla. She said the plane crashed at the end of the airport's runway at 6:50 p.m. -AirDisaster.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 26 Aug 2001 04:05:28 -0700 (PDT) From: Nathan R Subject: Re: [oztori] Singer Aaliyah, seven others killed in Bahamas plane crash Yeah that news was shocking... Answer: I do. No, really. A bit of compassion goes a long way. Peace and CHOGM to all. CBF and all that jungk. Apathy tires me, so please don't speak on behalf of everyone when you say 'no one'. Unless YOU actually care and really don't consider yourself to be a someone, which is sad really, but there are more important things to worry about, like the coming revolution. Words are very unnecessary - Tori could sing the phone book and I would have a rollicking good time in my honest opinion. It's about sound, really. Call me a po-mo hippy, but anything can really constitute art. Even if Vespertine *was* Bjork by numbers (I haven't heard enough of it to comment either way, but I'm sure it'll be the album of the year etc.), this wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing, because I think she counts in hexidecimal or something more obscure, not your typical numeric system, so she's always going to be one interesting chickie. She could also sing the phone book. But she would put more interesting beats and string arrangements behind. The Sydney Tori Party was FabyilusH, thanks so much to all who came and made it heaps fun. I'm sure someone's already sent an email with all the gory details but I get digest now which is much easier to digest but means everything comes a bit later. Money was raised for excellent causes and the love flowed like passion pulp. People should not be criticised for correcting others' spelling and grammatical aberrations. Insofar as I can ascertain, it is NEVER intended to condescend in a "oh look how stupid you are, you can't spell" fashion, but is rather more of an educative activity, with a goal of enlightenment and consequential liberation of the human race. PLEASE CONSIDER THE IMPLICATIONS OF REJECTING FREE EDUCATION. Unless ignorance is now being extolled by a value amongst 'the people', in ovine step their democratically elected representatives. Little more have I to say, except that on the topic of SLG, it is a fantastic album, I really like it all, except I must skip track #2 ('97 B&C). Not because I don't like the song - it's very intense and creepy and all that, but I think it's just a little too full on and doesn't fit in. Like you do with God, Dude. Which is also a Track #2, it would seem. Or maybe it would ssem? Any suggestions for Mariah Carey and the like shall be promptly trashed." I think that would depend on what kind of emotional response you were hoping for. Personally I can't think of anything better than "Skeletons" by Rickie Lee Jones. I know people have been threatened for mentiong Mariah.. but there's a Celine song which I won't get into on the death of a relative.. I'm not sure why either but the mere idea of "death music" says "Stay" by Shakespeare's sister for some reason.. but as I said it would all depend on what response you were going for. Indeed Marianne is another good choice (which someone already mentioned). I sang "Salt Water" (one of those lennons.. Julian I think) at a funeral-esque type of affair once as part of a choir, but in that case that song had particular relevance to the deceased. Which isn't much to go on in my opinion. Mikewhy didn't even know, though he suspected, going by something Ana Voog (who did a web chat rhing with Tori, remember her?) posted on her message board or something, saying something abou hoping her pregnancy wasn't making her too sick. The day or so after she posted another message saying that she meant 'pregnant' with songs, since Tori had said she'd been doing a lot of media stuff the day they'd done the chat, and she had song ideas in her head that she couldn't get out. So if indeed she'd had three miscarriages before Natashya, Natashya was probably a surprise baby on accounts that Tori didn't expect to get preggers again so soon after a miscarriage. I would say it was that rather than Tori was surprised she went to term. 'Butcher' an Abba song?? How the fuck could you butcher an Abba song?? They sound enough like they came out of a dog's arse, I really believe it's impossible to make them sound worse.
