Actually this whole smoe thing is getting very annoying, am I the only one finding replies to emails which I haven't even seen appear on the list? I fear it may be the warp necelles creating a sub space flux which is distorting the temporal corona about the list. Lots of people made: >another reference to Br*tn&y Arghghghgh!!! Please Mummy don't put knitting needles in my ears, Mummy please don't... This is the reason I don't listen to Triple J any more, if people see dog crap on the street they simply step around it and ignore it, but if they hear it in the media they all have to have a poke and a sniff. So I propose a list of banned terms, the first of which is Br%$@!y. Instead one may substitute the name "evilfourheaded- boghogfromtheplanetpestilencealpha". The words 'Tori' and 'crap' should be separated by a distance of no less than six words or one grammatical termination. And as for that very familiar noun that many would like to see taken down a notch... well, it wouldn't be my place to ban him. ;) >Oh picky, picky. Fine. Good 'Tori wrote the song' >b-sides: I think Tori writes all her songs really, even her covers. No one previously has made me think deeply on 'This Old Man'. She doesn't just take the 'let's put a snare/bass over the top and sing it like the original' view (or alternatively the 'let's take out everything, leave a piano, and sing it like the original' view) - and that is what is truly unique about her covers. And that, I'm glad to say, is your lot for the day. :) ennui [dickvandykerules-ok?] _ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Aug 2001 01:09:58 -0700 (PDT) From: Natty Subject: [oztori] cover style Well, how's this for a question. Zac, How do you listen to MP3s? Do you listen to them through a computer? Cause if you *do* - there is your problem with their quality. Audio output from computers sucks - it sucks really really really bad. The DAC on sound cards is an ultra cheap DAC, and I am quite certain I could design a better quality one then what is on most sound cards, plus with the internal interference etc etc not to mention the horrid circuitry employed on most sound cards, and you have one terrible sounding, high noise, non flat, restricted frequency range output. Not to mention the terrible quality power supplies, bad circuitry on the bus, higher (and higher bus speeds (and hence more and more interference) and good quality sound output becomes increasing more and more difficult/impossible. (note: you CAN get high quality audio from a computer, i'm assuming 'average' computer here - you might well have (for example) an external DAC - but i'm assuming you don't :) (note2: even the "high quality audio" from a computer is debatable) if that *is* how you listen to MP3s.... - well of course you aren't going to get high quality audio, and you will be able to hear an MP3. I have been a big follower of the LAME project for a considerable time (end of 98/early 99) and the quality increases that virtually each release gets is quite startling. When each LAME release comes out, I rip BFP* and encode it with the release, and then i decode it again and burn it back to CD and listen - - and listen and listen and listen and listen some more. (* i use BFP because it is the one album i know back the front, up side down, sideways and any other way you could know an album... - i really am a tori fan despite what ppl might be thinking as of late due to my anti-SLG comments :) I currently have 13 different BFP cds piled up labeled 'LAME xxx'... (not that i'm saying BFP is lame or anything... :)) Around LAME 3.87 (they are up to 3.9) i couldn't pick any sound quality differences anywhere with in the CD - up till that point, i could always find tiny little places in just a few spots where i could hear artifacts introduced into the recording. I am yet to find anyone who claims 'I can pick any MP3' to be able to pick a recent LAME encoded CD. and i've had a lot of ppl listen... - this topic is something i have an extreme interest in (i major in audio in elec eng, plus its just something i have a big interest in :) If you are interested, I would love to send you a CD with some original and lame encoded tracks from and see if you CAN actually pick which ones are encoded or are still the originals... - not because i don't believe you that you can't pick them - but because i would LOVE to know if you can actually pick them... I seriously doubt you could... (and of course it would be really helpful if you didn't do a frequency analysis of them to work it out - just using your ears :) to me MP3s are a audio transport medium. - and once transported and burnt onto a real CD they *are* serious listening material... they are NOT when played through your average computer though... :) ZA> okay, okay, but unfortunately i've only got a 56k pipe and a 10gb ZA> hdd. that, and i'm lazy ;) I still have my trust old netcomm 28.8..... - i'm just patient.. .and been doing it for a long time ;)) ZA> okay. i retract that comment, i wasn't thinking when i wrote it. Cornflake Girl on Hey Hey It's Saturday), but I've always seen her sing live... or at least she is a convincing mimer ;) Nathan. . Make international calls for as low as $.04/minute with Yahoo! Thanks for the people who suggested their Tori-summer things, I hadn't actually listened carefully to the lyrics of Humpty Dumpty before... As for Bjork, I think I might have been a bit harsh yesterday, but in answer to Dan's question (I never remember which Dan is which.. I hope A dan asked this question.. lol) I was listening to a few tracks from the apparently new album in a CD store. I don't know if it was the album or from the single (which didn't have a visible tracklisting when I picked it up; kind of annoying). "I know people are reading this and thinking can't Nathan have a twinky and get over this?" ~ Tori Amos on the notorious Nathan R bside baggings. My favourite B-sides: - - Here In My Head - - Sugar (although most live versions are better) - - Upside Down - - Butterfly - - Daisy Dead Petals - - Sister Janet - - Hungarian Wedding Song (In the words of Elizabeth Montgomery "WELL?!") - - Bachelorette - - Cooling - - Purple People (Christmas In Space) Actually still this day I think the most beautiful thing I've ever heard is Baker Baker live off the 1,000 Oceans single. I am well Mr Flansburg, it is most amicable of you to enquire. :))) (oh, the Knatty bit.. a joke too, please don't take offence :) Then everyone had a go at me 'bout my terminal CMOS and I went all red and took my Action Man figurines home and sat under my bed and cried. . . . ;;;;;;;) (How does a cyclops wink? It must be annoying for sarcastic cyclopses.) And Daniel H. well.. err.. you know if you really want to go off about standing waves and the like the Yahoogroup 'Aus_Noise' could be your thing, if you don't mind me saying. But while we're at it... even LAME (I hate those damn infinitely looping acronyms) is not lossless encoding, it cannot truly reproduce the original wav (to the ear) - which is itself not a truly lossless reproduction etc. etc. I don't really think BFP is the best test of an encoder, some really complex audio creation which uses subsonic harmonics would be more appropriate methinks. And the whole having 13 copies of BFP from various versions of LAME - wow! you're a creepy psycho too, do you have naked pictures of Richard Alston posted up on your walls like me? ;) Can I just say in parting - group hug! *hghmghmhgmghmghgmghgm* Now, don't we all feel better? Oh, and while in the shower I was trying to think of interesting, non-aggressive, things to talk about on here and I started thinking about my favourite Tori rhyming scheme. And then I couldn't think of one - five songs into Orbiting live and I still hadn't heard a rhyme. Very strange, her songs are so lyrically complex and yet she doesn't go in for the easy rhyme (I thought of an example of the opposite, but then I remember that there are a few Bon Jovi fans on the list ;). That'll do en, that'll do. ennui [goodforyourheartandtastytoo] _ ------------------------------ End of oztori-digest V1 #118 ****************************
