This is not intended at all to dis, or to be argumentative but Neris comments were a trigger for a few thoughts. What triggered them was the mention of Wyoming, which for me leads to thoughts of laramie, wyoming, and Matthew shepard. (Small informative bit, just in case: Matthew Shepard was a gay boy beaten half to death and then crucified by two rednecks in Laramie, wyoming. Tori content: she dedicated "Merman" to him on several occasions live.) I think small towns are only safer than cities if you can conform, fit in, so if you are non-Anglo or queer that counts you out. In my experience the small town environment only serves to magnify violence, or the threat of violence, to those who do not fit in. One of my friends, for example, was actually asked by the police in his hometown to leave because he was too obviously gay. OK... Now I'm going to write a few more words on this topic... I like most Tori covers... but as b-sides. Was listening to "Real Men" yesterday (naughty me downloading it and burning onto CD), and as fine as it is... one can't help but wonder.. "okay, what MORE is there to this"? Someone somewhere said this, and I think it's very true - most of Tori's appeal is in her uniqueness, with HER words, HER songs, etc. With a whole album of material written by somebody else, it loses the whole, "I wonder what Tori could mean by THAT?" lyrics-deciphering fun of her other albums, which you always seem to discover new meaning in, etc. I fear that one listen to SLGs and it will be like.. "is that ALL there is?" *gulp* > one possibility is that Tori just wants to get out > of > her contract w/ Atlantic, and she sees this as the > easiest way. We haven't had any new stuff since > Venus > (no new B-Sides, just 'secretime' - WOOfuckingHOO), ***WARNING... CONTENTIOUS STATEMENT TO BE MADE IN NEXT SENTENCE*** Tori hasn't made any consistently decent b-sides since Under The Pink. The majority of the Boys For Pele b-sides sucked IMHO - - particularly in comparison to the Little Earthquakes and Under the Pink ones. Who could possibly say that the likes of "Amazing Grace" or "Samurai" compare to "Here. In My Head" or "Sister Janet", f'rinstance? Yeah, most of the Choirgirl b-sides were good, but there weren't as many of them; and even then a good number were originally recorded during the Pele sessions (Cooling, Never Seen Blue, Beulah Land) - ironic since they were better than ALL of the original BFP b-sides. To Venus and Back had NO b-sides... and SLGs looks like it's going to have more covers as b-sides. It's just.. disappointing. > so > maybe she's saving up her new stuff for some amazing > career comeback. or maybe, although i dearly hope > this > isn't the case, she's lost her muse for a while. or > maybe for good. she got pretty obtuse w/ Venus - a > group of spontaneous, seemingly rushed songs which > she > admits just kinda got plonked down on tape - and > maybe > she's not the same tori we used to know *sniff* lol ***WARNING - POSSIBLY EVEN *MORE* CONTENTIOUS A STATEMENT APPEARS IN THE SENTENCE BELOW*** Without sounding too cynical, she needs another major tragedy to happen in her life for her to write something truly inspiring again... Whether you like it or not, Tori is renouned for singing about depressing/tragic things. Now that things seem to be in place in her life, what has she got left to write about? (okay, this is being more than a tad 'tongue in cheek', but it does have a *smidgeon* of truth in it). I don't really want to admit this, but I think she is making a series of bad career choices. Boys for Pele alienated a few... then people didn't like the idea of a band for From the Choirgirl Hotel and the Plugged 98... then To Venus and Back many felt was rushed (*I wonder if "they" would have felt this way had they not known what a short period it was recorded in?) and unlike a Tori album... and now the covers record. It's like.. if SLGs was the only Tori album you had heard, would you still be a fan? *exit 'being-overly-critical-of-Tori' mode* Nathan. . I really don't like it! Her voice is way to breathy. But guess what? she's releasing a single in a month or so (got the release dates at work...) I'm really really hoping it doesn't sell. She sung the Waikiki song Frail earlier in the episode and ugh ugh ugh. that's about it really. ugh - i just had a brief online conversation with my best friend little sister - she's such a little bitch! Never met the girl before but she hates me because i see her sister all the time and she doesn't. She has tried so many times to make us fight (first couple of times it worked until we realised what she was doing...) and she pisses me off. just had to vent. tori content - not bloody much except i listened to the album several times again today. I've decided it's a great tori album to listen to when you want to listen to tori but don't want to deal with all the emotional stuff attached with it. Is that all there is? NOTE TO PEOPLE: After a situation like this I would not at all be averse to breaking out the booze and having a ball. > Tori hasn't made any consistently decent b-sides > since > Under The Pink. I agree with this. [Apart from Cooling, which is unarguably wonderful.] BFP B-sides are more curiosities, interesting/uninteresting improvs I think, rather than coherent contenders for album space [Apart from Cooling, we all know the story behind that]. But you've got to admit Graveyard is pretty cool. > Whether you like > it or not, Tori is renouned for singing about > depressing/tragic things. Yes, this is true. Although, if she wrote an album full of songs like "Happy Workers" I don't think I'd be complaining /too/ much. > I don't really want to admit this, but I think she > is > making a series of bad career choices. Keep in mind that she was signed to a contract that I'm sure Atlantic wouldn't let her break, so she kinda had no choice in the matter. > It's like.. if SLGs was the only > Tori > album you had heard, would you still be a fan? I'd be of the state of mind "Oh yeah she's pretty good, I might consider it if I see something in the bargain bin but I'll stick to my other faves". Of course, having said all that, the album is thorougly enjoyable, just don't think of it as "the new tori album". Think of it as a collection of covers done by this woman named Tori Amos whos got quite a good voice and some good arrangement techniques. xoxo Dan ;) ===== one false move, and you're dead, ah...
