Since I've been so verbose these past few days I thought I might just put forward a little discussion topic, and in the process assimilate some new knowledge. My thinking concerns choirs, I've only ever seen a primary school choir from the inside and so I'm wondering: when one sees the members of a symphonic choir flicking through a score as they sing, what exactly is written on that page - is it simply "sing this bit high" "sing this bit low" or do they actually have to know how to sing notes? (I'm not talking about soprano, baritone etc. I know they *do* have to learn to sing notes etc. I'm talking about the en masse choir.) The reason I put this question here is chiefly because I'm sure there is amongst our number the types who would know such things (in fact, someone here is in a choir I'm sure, I'm sure I've read it here somewhere, or on someone's homepage {oops, don't let slip about the secret database ennui..}) err.. so people here might know, and secondly I've always sort of wondered why Tori has never written anything for a full orchestra, or choir. I may be wrong but hasn't Tori had (essentially) a classical training in music? And I'm sure the quotemeisters upon the list will be able to elucidate, but is there a Tori quote where she says she was kicked out of music school because she preferred The Beatles over Beethoven - sure I hate Beethoven too, but there must be one classical composer she admires..? I can hear it now, a full orchestration of "Yes, Anastasia" - and while we're at it, would Tori be considered a soprano or mezzo-soprano? (I don't even know what the difference is so if you're a full bottle on this please don't laugh at my stupidity :) Bjork too should write fully orchestrated pieces, now I know she has had a really rigorous training in classical music, but she didn't compose the strings for 'Homogenic' did she? Perhaps on the next album.. That's all I really had to say, really. Getting a few friends together to toodleoodle on "Little Earthquakes" just isn't gonna float my boat, I think she needs a whole stadium of voices, and strings, and french horns (oo la la) (no really, that's the sound they make ;) ,and those great big 'Tahoma' are they called?, and a glockenspiel, and those big tubular bells that dangle down, and a cow bell, and and and and I would be a little more excited about the ides of September... Oh, and xylene is like benzene, toluene (paint thinner) - you know, smelly stuff ('aromatic hydrocarbons' I suppose would be the correct term.) Apparently they are a dead-set way to pick yourself up a nasty cancer (as is living past the age of thirty and eating burnt toast ;) so next time you're refuelling your car (or jerry can, as the case may be ;) make sure you don't have a sniff of the lovely fumes. You see, when the oil companies did the responsible thing and stopped adding lead to fuel it was decided to add xylene instead, so don't inhale the stuff - for some of us though it is too late, already we have overdosed on burnt toast with vegemite, oh wonderful vegemite, spread so thick one can't tell where the vegemite ends and the charcoal begins. Rejoice! for if no one is looking we can eat it from the jar! ennui [cherubim, composed of head and plumes] _ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 6 Jul 2001 16:14:14 -0700 (PDT) From: Nathan R Subject: [oztori] Got a pig, hiding her truffles ennui wrote: > Ello, piglets! When we were doing Chemistry in Year 9, we were actually put into groups, and had to come up with a song on atoms! Anyway, my group came up with "Atomica", sung to the tune of Madonna's "Erotica".. It went like this: (chorus) "Atomic, atomic Atoms run all through my body. Atomic, atomic Atoms run all through my body." I can't remember the verses, but I do remember: "I'd like to split you and see the reaction!" as being one of its sleazy lines. Ive been thinking about the virtues of digest vs. individual mails; individual mail you get moment by moment, like news breaking, whereas with digest you get a bit of a narrative happening (eg: conversation re: angelina vs. angelica, of which more later.) first of all...qc :) I think Becc and dylan both mentioned something about attending. me too, me too. I went last year and had a fabulous time; one night we commandeered the Bathurst bowling alley, and 50 queer people of all denominations performed the choreography to "nutbush city limits" in formation. this year I can only go two days, wednesday nite to friday morning, so maybe us ears with feet should meet :) Dylan, then Jason: > And Thorpie!!! He is str8 unfortunately...with his > shoe size he must be ahem > quite large....in the ear department....and I have > the him being str8 on > very good authority...sorry guys! >I have two good authorities saying otherwise but I much rather prefer your version, not that it matters... and I think it's ridiculous outing people >who are still in the closet - it breeds homophobia :P I would love to compare sources, because I also have two so called authorities confirming that thorpie flies the rainbow flag. these stories always make me laugh; they are so patently untrustworthy, always a friend of a friend :) my favourite is the one about a friend of a friend having sex with jeff buckley in a graveyard in hunters hill when he toured in the early nineties. while were on the subject of outing, rachael wrote: >actually when i was in England in January, there was this thing on the >sports channel about "a well known australian swimmer who is about > to >come out of the closest"... i dont think anyone actually did though. The brits are *always* doing this. It happened also to toby (the blonde one with an eyebrow ring) from human nature (o.k., I realise it is not a good thing I can differentiate members of human nature. I actually performed on the same stage once, as part of a massed choir, but thats another story...) q magazine, the brit rolling stone, described him as "out and proud", when he is really not out and proud at all. Jason is right though, outing is not something to be encouraged. re: the whole rights debate... >On Tue, 03 July 2001, Daniel wrote: > > else wrote the bit that Tori is actually using. And Zac said: > not really -- didn't michael jackson buy the rights to the > entire beatles catalogue? (assuming said song is a beatles > track - i wouldn't have a clue.) I might be wrong, but arent the rights to the recording and the rights to the song itself two different things. tori, for example, publishes her songs with sword and stone (lyrics by permission of, etc), whereas atlantic owns the rights to the recording? I would love for someone 2 correct me :)1 Nathan wrote: >4. Lots of people dont know what molasses means, so > I always feel really smart when I get to explain it > 2 them ;) I think my first exposure to the word 'molasses' was through Tina Turner's "Nutbush City Limits" - "salt pork and molasses is all you get in jail". ah...one more reason 2 love the word. And whoever was dissing molasses; talk to the hand is all I can say ;) I loved the responses to the words I hold dear question...
