Ive always loved the idea of being the man with the latest; one of of the reasons i love journalism, I get to hear lots o' rumours (e.g. the ongoing debate re: is ian thorpe gay... Id like to think so hehe :) But this news is probably so passe, common knowledge already. here goes anyway. you guys know, obviously, about the release of the new tori album, "strange little girls", on September 18th, later this year. well, it is, apparently, to be a album of covers, all songs originally written by men. they include, 10cc, "Im not in love" and bob Geldof, "I dont like mondays", (both of which seem like banal choices to me; I mean, come one, deni hines covered "Im not in love"). Neil Young, "heart of gold", which was originally a real guitar strummy song, so interesting to see how it translates to piano. the beatles, "happiness is a Warm gun". And, most intriguingly, eminem, "97 Bonnie and clyde", which we can only hope is better than elton john performing "stan" at the grammies. the concept is supposed to be all about gender roles. anyway peoples, love you and leave you, john. _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 3 Jul 2001 00:50:42 -0700 (PDT) From: Nathan R Subject: [oztori] when Janie was arrested, they found it was a HEAP OF TRASH (lol.. to quote Aerosmith & one of the lines in my spiffing new e-mail) John Spencer Blues Explosion wrote: > Ive always loved the idea of being the man with the > latest; one of of the > reasons i love journalism, I get to hear lots o' > rumours If I was a journalist, the reasons I would love it would be: 1) get paid to write a heap of trash on people I don't like; 2) ever so-SLIGHT possibility of meeting/chatting to some cool celebs - eg. Well, being a Trek fan - and on the 'net I can understand these sorts of reactions. I've noticed in the last 3 years the numbers of people denouncing new episodes, even before they've seen them - in some cases, as soon as they hear the early script out-line! Often, these episodes end up being the best episodes. (well not all the time, cause I feel the people who make it get on the net and go 'oops maybe we shouldn't do that' - when they should really just stick to their guns.) > It's so funny >how most of them pride themselves in being so >"open-minded", and then chuck hissy-fits left right >and centre over a song they've not even heard yet. >For all they know, Tori could be chanting "fuck you >Eminem mother-fucker!" backwards throughout the entire >song ;) Now that would be funny. Have the days of backwards recording gone from our CDs!?! Tori could start a new trend. I have one track which is entirely backwards. For those Enya fans out there, who might have a single with 'Eclipse' on it. (namely the Oiche Chuin (Silent Night) single) Enya has a track on there called 'Eclipse' which is in actual fact just a reverse version of her first Solo Album 'Enya' (later rereleased as 'The Celts') I think the track is Dan y Dwr. :o) >> They're >> all going on about how >> they're not going to buy SLG because royalties will >> be going to Eminem, and >> they'd rather just dl mp3s than buy the CD. Fucking >> ridiculous. > This is true, who is going to get a majority of the money for these recordings? I'm sure Tori would, other wise what is the point in re-doing them - apart from the artistic esscence of the album. Look at all the covers that are out there that are just Top 40 fodder, at least Tori isn't doing this to get a 'quick single' up the charts. Look at other bands... what the fuck are they doing combining Queen and that boy-band... with We Will Rock You. Then what about Geri Halliwell with Its Raining Men. There are a few more out there in the recent months, which were just totally unnecessary rehash of past popular songs. Cashing in on nostalgia. *Waiting for 'We built this city on Rock and Roll' to be 'covered'. Then we do get Gywnny doing her version of 'Bette Davis Eyes' Which *ducks* I don't mind - and my ears pricked up when I first saw her doing it in the actual movie. At least there was an excuse there - a movie about Karaoke. >It's funny how they had no problem buying a CD with a >cover of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" on it though - >surely any royalties going to Kurt from that ended up >being spent on smack (before he topped himself).. or >afterwards, feeding his widow's habit. > > >> There are >> about 3 pages of people having the biggest bitch >> over something they haven't >> even heard. Oh - BTW, 'sellout' give me a proper definition for that term - I remember when 'Pop' came out by U2 - and it is one FANTASTIC album. I think I like it more than 'What you can't leave behind'. >In a way, I'm glad Tori has pissed them off so much. >She doesn't need those type of people as 'fans', I >say. Just on this, I may have misunderstood the whole thing, but tori isn't using the majority of the lyrics is she, she's replacing them with her own. The only thing she's keeping is the music, more or less. So if Eminem only wrote the lyrics [I don't know if this is the case or not, I'm only hypothesising] then he wouldn't be getting a cent, would he, because someone else wrote the bit that Tori is actually using. Like for her cover of "Happiness is a Warm Gun" is written by Lennon/McCartney...so Ringo and George won't be getting anything. Is that right? More or less? Not that it bothers me...I just think it'd be funny to go on the dent forum is totally prove everyone wrong. They will probably be not as interesting as an album of new material, but the early news releases said she had been influenced by a number of things inc the birth of her daughter. So it is more than likely that this album will be one of her more ambitious ones to date. And speaking of Strange Little Girls, I had this really weird dream about it last nite! I dreamt that the cover was green (fluoro green), she changed the name to Strange Little Children (which sorta describes this list really! However, the songs are still done in such a way as "to expose what she sees as music's pervasive misogyny by animating men's songs from a woman's perspective." " and: " The article says that Tori is taking "songs written and originally sung by men and, without substantial rewriting, created a female character for each." So to those people saying, "How can Tori cover Eninem?," I say that Tori is reacting in a productive way to what Eminem has said. Instead of simply complaining about him, Tori is responding to him and proving a point about taking responsibility for your lyrics. " so how i interpret this is: if you actually look at the number of words etc being changed there isn't many, however, the way she is changing the lyrics will provide a different slant to the interpretation of the song. perhaps in eminem's case, she has planned to 'use' his own lyrics against him. sounds pretty juicy. well, i guess we'll find out soon. angela ------------------------------ End of oztori-digest V1 #61 ***************************
