Just posted on the Dent... http://thedent.com/strangelittlegirls.html#time Another new pic of Tori looking very different n' cool! As with the 'Natalie Imbruglia' pic, it says that Tori has dressed up as a different character for each of the 12 songs on SLG.. so no, these pics are NOT Tori's "new look" (damn!). It also says that Tori does not change any lyrics, and that another of the tracks is a Boomtown Rats cover (Bob Geldof's old band.. sang "I Don't Like Mondays"). Here's the article for those who can't be bothered to click the link above ;) Is This the Real Slim Shady? Can the same words be both offensive and progressive? "The view changes depending on where you're standing," says Tori Amos. For her album "Strange Little Girls", due in September, Amos reveals that she has covered 12 famous male penned songs-including Eminem's "' 97 Bonnie & Clyde"-without changing the lyrics. The point? To expose what she sees as music's pervasive misogyny by animating men's songs from a woman's perspective. Amos says she invented and "befriended" a dozen different women (she has taken publicity photos dressed as all of them), through whom she sings tracks by the Velvet Underground, Neil Young, the Beatles, the Boomtown Rats and more. But it's the Eminem track that will get people talking. "Eminem represents so much right now to a whole group of people. And he's a great poet. But when you kill your wife, you don't get to control whom she becomes friends with when she's dead." Nathan. . Get personalized email addresses from Yahoo! People on that forum, for the most part, are truly neurotic. The kind who splurt, "but HOW could Tori do this to ME" and "She OWES us so much!"... as if Tori was making muzak for their ears only. It's so funny how most of them pride themselves in being so "open-minded", and then chuck hissy-fits left right and centre over a song they've not even heard yet. For all they know, Tori could be chanting "fuck you Eminem mother-fucker!" backwards throughout the entire song ;) > They're > all going on about how > they're not going to buy SLG because royalties will > be going to Eminem, and > they'd rather just dl mp3s than buy the CD. Fucking > ridiculous. It's funny how they had no problem buying a CD with a cover of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" on it though - surely any royalties going to Kurt from that ended up being spent on smack (before he topped himself).. or afterwards, feeding his widow's habit. > There are > about 3 pages of people having the biggest bitch > over something they haven't > even heard. Oh, and they're all (maybe not *all* but > it's definitely a large > perecentage) calling Toz a sellout. *sigh* In a way, I'm glad Tori has pissed them off so much. She doesn't need those type of people as 'fans', I say. If they hear it and don't like it, fine. But to dismiss it already is a bit "premature, she said, and smiled" ;) First Tori was a sell-out for getting a band, even though songs like Crucify, Precious Things, and Cornflake Girl had more instrumentation than just "the girl and her piano". Then she was a sell-out for touring with Alanis (okay, they had a point ;)... Then a sell-out for making 1000 Oceans (ok, they had another point ;)... and now she's a sell-out for doing covers. Hmmmmmmm. The lyric "If you don't like me just a little, well, why do you hang around?" comes to mind. If you're not in it for love, I'm outta here, Nathan. . Actually, I really don't know how well a covers album will do in terms of sales. Sure, there will be the initial curiosity factor making people buy it.. but how much longevity will it have? Probably not a whole lot. Her last 2 albums dropped out of the Top 50 here after 5 and 4 weeks respectively (yes, I'm a charts boffin), and I don't really see this one sticking round for any longer. But then I *am* a pessimist ;) Nathan. . Get personalized email addresses from Yahoo! More likely it will go to their record companies. The original writers will probably get a teeeeeeeeeeensy fraction of 1/12 of royalties - so in effect, probably not much at all. But Tori will get her $$ from performing and producing the songs. Nathan. . Get personalized email addresses from Yahoo! But then I *am* a pessimist ;) i agree entirely, covers never really do make it and well with all the pessimism surrounding the recording at this point in time i think by time its released there will be few who will buy it - unless the first single is a mega hit -but i cant see that happening for some reason, but then you've also got the fact that many will just d/l the album - i hate when people do that , i could go on all day about why you shouldnt burn mp3s but i wont, nathan said - 'If you're not in it for love, I'm outta here,' oh, may god help your poor soul, ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 3 Jul 2001 16:13:41 +1000 From: "Lavenda" Subject: [oztori] covering success The success of covers all depends on what you hear first, for the most part. Invariably, you'll find people are surprised when they find out a song is a cover, because they're of the time of the cover, not the original. I mean, very few people have heard teh original 'Tainted Love', but most people will think they have, that it is Soft Cell's (and right now, I couldn't tell you who the orignal was done by). Anyway, that this is a whole album of songs that already existed (really logn way of saying they're kidna covers) may be to it's detriment. But I also think a huge part of it will be how much Tori makes the songs her own (or at least, the personas own). I also think that because she is touring solo is in our favour, because she won't be looking for the huge venues, so she's more likely to get a full house here, let alone it being cheaper. As for forum people... I do frequent the place, but I actually read very few threads, and respond to even less, because there are those sorts of people there. But there are also gems, so don't blanket statement them all...
