Dan: Sorry not to get back to you sooner, but I was overwhelmed with your enthusiasm and good will. Also, we wanted to set the right tone for our neighbors who live so far away. I have seen some of your emails and suggestions and offer to really work on this and for this we are all grateful. Of course, you already that this is an American charity and is tax-deductible according to US law. Tax laws may differ in othe countries. We have rec'd a response from one of your countryman named Bec Humhreys also. (Bechumphreys@aol.com). Below is memo we are sending out. However, some of the numbers have changed. We have now received over 225 responses and it is a tribute to Tori. Our prizes and trinkets apply to out-of-US parties, and we'll help with what we can. Again, sorry for the delay in getting back to you. Dear Toriphile: Thank you very much for your quick response to our Happy Birthday, Tori announcement and your offer to help make this event a huge success. I apologize that this reply isn't as personal as I would like, but we've been overwhelmed by the response. In the first 24 hours, more than 75 people have signed up to host house parties and help organize big-city bashes. With our minimum goal of $1,085 per house party and $25,000 per big city, Happy Birthday, Tori could be RAINN's biggest fundraiser ever. In about a week, we will send you a preliminary host kit to get you started. The folder will include some more information about the parties, a sample flier you can personalize and distribute, and tips on raising money. We will also give you a call to answer any questions you might have. While you're waiting for us to finish this host kit, please don't wait for to start planning. Here are some things you can do now. First, pick a date. You can hold the party on Tori's actual birthday-August 22- or another day that week or weekend. Second, make and organize your lists-friends, coworkers, family, employers- anybody who might help by buying tickets, selling tickets, or volunteering time or in another way. Third, start contacting your friends and others. Tell them to mark the date on their calendar, and ask for their help raising money. Give them specific goals- whether you want them to buy one ticket or sell five, be clear about what you want from them. While not everybody will live up to every commitment (so it goes), they'll come a lot closer if they've committed to something specific. Each and every Happy Birthday, Tori party is important to RAINN. Almost all of our donations are small-the average is less than $50- and we rely on them to keep the hotline running. These parties are also very important to Tori herself. Early next week we plan to give her the first list of people who have responded. I know she will be touched and amazed-though not surprised- at the support you and dozens of others have offered. We'll send your host kit shortly. If you have any questions in the meantime, please email me at rainnmail@aol.com or call 1-800-656-HOPE, extension three. If you haven't already, please email me with your full name and mailing address, phone number, and the best time to reach you. Thanks again. Together, we are going to throw some amazing parties. While I was asleep earlier (actually I lie - I was lying there awake, trying to *get* back to sleep after he'd woken me up asking if I had "anything decent" on minidisc. Of course I said no. Jesus man, I was asleep!) he ate practically all that was left of the potato salad in the fridge. He ate his share of it earlier and it was to be my lunch tomorrow, and all he's left is enough that he can say, "I left you some." About half a cup. He does this *all* the time. Everything in the fridge that I don't want him to eat, I have to stick post-it notes on it with my name on them, but he eats it all anyway. Just more slyly. I had chocolate quik hidden in my room once, but he got a key to my door cut when I left my keys lying around one time, and started breaking in, stealing the quik, and stirring powdered milk in instead. Food was disappearing all the time, but I thought I was miscalculating cuz I didn't realise anyone else had a key to my room. When I first packed to move out of home I had two milk crates of food sitting outside my door and he was robbing them the whole time they sat there. He calls Mum in the day time from work to tell her what he wants for dinner and when he wants it. And she pretends to be irritated by all this, but she really just finds it *cute*!! If you want to talk about wet stuff left on the bathroom floor, why stop at bathmats? My brother doesn't hang up his towels. At all. They just get tossed on the floor, and Mum threatens that she won't do his washing unless he picks them up (did I mention he's 20? And his mummy still does his washing?), but she always gives in. The one time I remember her not giving in for a week, you had to wade through an ankle-high pile of wet towels covering the whole bathroom floor, every time you want to go in there. He drops toothpaste in the sink and leaves it there, pees on the toilet seat and leaves it there, steals my CDs and doesn't return them until they're scratched to the point of being unplayable... argh!! Why am I living in my parents' house again??? Oh yeah, to save money for four weeks. At the expense of my sanity. Hi everyone! Well this Tori Party thing is just taking off. I really do hope that they pass on our interest of hosting one to Tori herself, maybe she'll feel sudden pangs of guilt for having not visited at all and jump on a plane straight away and come over to say hi? Hey, better still, why don't we invite Tori to our BBQ/Pissup/Fundraiser? She can have her birthday here, amongst a hundred or so strangers! *cough* I'm in bad form today, nothing else to say really. I still don't have a job, and this joblessness thing is really getting to me, it's nearly 1pm and I'm still in my pyjamas (well I do have an agency out there looking for employment for me?). In smelly sleepiness. ~Andrew~ PS- Any Melbournians heading out to Melbourne UnEarthed tomorrow or whenever the hell it is? ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 21 Jun 2001 05:03:50 +0100 (BST) From: =?iso-8859-1?q?Daniel?= Subject: Re: [oztori] The Tori Party brilliant idea! but first we need to fix a date and location! argh! lol once we get that part sorted the rest is [relatively] easy! dan ;) - --- Rala wrote: > hey as well as putting up posters and flyers...how > about ringing up JJJ for a plug? But will be more than happy to organise all the p.r. stuff when it comes to it! Oh and hey is there anyone out there in Canberra that is interested in going to a party? Cause my friend is down there at Uni and is bummed she cant come to the sydney party so is thinking of kicking one off down there.... Let me know! Rala ;oD ===== 'I started to accept the mess I'm in. I have been having a good day today. I travelled for free to uni (Hooray for those striking unions!), did well in my practical exam, the canteen had beef and bacon pasta- beef and bacon! We never get beef and bacon! I got a free chocolate bar, a new pair of earrings, and travelled home for free again... So as a result I am unhealthily cheery and will probably irritate the crap out of you within the next five seconds (if I haven't done so already). Tori Party- I'm willing to make the trek into Sydney to par-tay with all you lovely people. If we're going to advertise with flyers, radio etc., a hall would probably be a safer bet than someone's house. I can help with organising up here- I'll see if I can drag some more Novacastrians along. Siblings- I don't live with my sister anymore. Whee!
