Hi everyone! Books....ahhh books.... I've just read over the 40 odd subject headings in my inbox of unread messages, and I see the word 'books' appears in heaps of them - woo hoo! Being a manager of a quality large bookselling chain bookshop, books are my thang, big time : - ) Rennee said: >I LOVE Isobel Carmody! Obernewtyn, Farseekers, Ashling, were all fantastic! wow. never thought i'd see another person knew who she was :) Well as it turns out she's one of Australia's most popular young adult authors. Daniel said >but "A Cage OF Butterflies" was absolutely brilliant. I couldn't agree more. That book is so...just...wonderfully deep and moving. Very captivating. At the same time it's an easy read (being young adult fiction and all). Jasmina said >i've been listening to UTP a lot lately Funny you mentioned, because so have I!! I don't know why, but spontaneously I just threw it in (gently of course) and started blurting out tunes in my lounge room. It was great fun : - ) I love reminiscing on old Tori times, and about how some songs remind me of times etc etc. 15 emails later, Daniel said >so I'm making one where you've gotta find >Tori with help from other famous musicians and >characters from tori songs Ohhh!!! ohhh!! Can we make Britney Spears the evil musician holding Tori captive or something, where Tori's tied up in leather and being forced to listen to Britney's lyrics over and over again....now that would surely get me going knowing Tori was in such a terrible predicament. Speaking of Britney Spears, there was so much fuss made in the media about the book she and her mother wrote together (they wrote it together as a bonding exercise). I remember driving along listening to Fox FM (must have been flicking and accidentally locked into it...*cough*) and heard them all exclaiming "wow the sales have gone through the roof for this book!!". Well, like I said I'm the boss of the game in a bookshop, and I checked our sales figures the other day of the book. 0. Zero. None. I laughed so hard. It was good to see that my customers have real taste, and know what not to buy. This email had a purpose, I know it did. Oh yes, so the books that I read in the last couple of weeks were - Sudden Wealth - Robert Llwellyn. A really funny book, a twisting tale about multi gazillionaires bored with life so they all decide to undertake radical therapy and to cure themselves they commit serious crime - they rob the Eurotunnel train. A great read. Flying - Someone Sutton. A dragging but entertaining read about sexually frustrated flight attendants. Tuesdays With Morrie - Mitch Albom. OMG. This biography is fucking amazing. Capturing the last year or however long it was of a terminally ill man, Morrie, it gives us great insight into death and how to deal with death and how to lead your life knowing that you too will die someday. Sounds morbid I know but I bet anyone else that has read it was equally touched and moved. Buried Alive - Someone Dutch. I think. true history of premature burial. It's fascinating and sickening and frightful all at the same time. So that's what I have been reading lately. Has anyone ever read any of the Tori biographies??? What are they like???? I mean perhaps some of the unauthorised ones...?? Part of my "day job" involves showing pictures to young impressionable minds (read: Primary-school children), and getting them to talk about what's in the pictures.. in order to assess their sentence structure/use of grammar/etc. ANYWAY, I secretly would LOVE to bring in some of Tori's more "out-there" pictures, and show it to some 5-6 year olds, and ask them to tell me what's going on in the pictures. eg - the pic of Tori kneeling on a mattress in a paddock of cows. I don't think I'd be game enough to try the breastfeeding piglet picture - as if word gets out, I could (rightly) get 'investigated' for doing so ;) Anyway.. I'm thinking of conducting my own little 'study', just to see if they come up with any interesting responses. (You know I have CD amnesia when ever I enter a music store) I heard the person go to another person behind the counter... this is a good CD... and I thought yeah it was - and asked what it was. It was Mississipi Hill Country Blues. by R.L. Burnside... It was JUST what I felt like listening to at the moment. Anyway I bought the other CD and left the store - and then turned around and when back and on the spur of the moment GOT that R.L. Burnside (exchanged it with the other CD) they were about the SAME price... So that is what I'm listening too now! This week is Sexuality Week at my Uni, and as a part of this we (queer students) get to choose the music that gets spun up at the bar on Friday afternoon from 4 'til 7pm or so. So that means 3 hours. Now, here's the rub: it's been advertised as a "celebration of queer musicianship" or some such, which means our job is to come up with songs which are either written or sung by non-straight people (lesbian gay bi etc.) or have content about (or even just make mention of) these and related issues. Promise I won't tell him. ;) Jodie wrote: My favourite books right now are Stardust by Neil Gaiman....if you haven't read this book you must! It was amazing, as soon as I finished it I wanted to read it again. Yes! She's right - definitely go and read this book. Awesome. It was my first Gaiman book, and I went out after finishing it to look for other stuff by him, and all I could find was Neverwhere. Which was still good, but not the same as Stardust... more gritty or something, which is fine when gritty is what you're wanting, but yeah. I had to force a total mind shift. Has anyone read Stardust and can make any suggestions on similar books? Gaiman or not.... ~Becc :) - -- witnessed: www.barbaric-yawp.com/journal ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 May 2001 20:42:57 -0700 From: "Hill, Renee" Subject: [oztori] sessions i just checked this weeks tv guide - tori is definitely Sunday 28th, 3:50am. I have been working (paid work for ISP) programming in perl & c since yr 10 at high school, so i've been programming in them for quite some time, plus i've done a 6month course of 'programming skills' at USYD for 6 months entirely in C. I know c (and c++ for that matter) quite well :) Oh, and i've even had the joy of doing an entire years worth of programming in Blue... ahhh.. now that is a fun experience :-\ Compile -> crash -> compile -> crash -> compile -> run -> compile -> crash... > For the international solitude of sufferers of CompSci > degrees, oh, and Tori.
