If you've already ordered then don't worry, you'll get one too. Justin Currie was still in his teens when he co-founded Del Amitri in his hometown of Glasgow. From 1982 to 2002, the band evolved from resourceful D.I.Y. indie combo to international hitmakers, releasing six much-loved studio albums before amicably parting ways. In 2007, Currie released his solo debut, What Is Love For? on Rykodisc, which was acclaimed for its superb songcraft and somber brilliance. On The Great War, Currie returns with a fresh collection of infectious melodies and ingenious wordplay - a combination of dark lyrical themes melded with a newfound optimism. The first single, 'A Man With Nothing To Do', captures Currie's signature songwriting technique, evoking a sense of vivacity with harmonious hooks and upbeat tempos while simultaneously unveiling multiple meanings through playful, provocative lyrics. Forgive me if it's old news. Late last year, a compilation was released entitled Park Lane Archives: Exclusive & Unreleased Tracks from Glasgow's Top Recording Studio. One of said tracks is a fine, fine, previously unreleased del Amitri tune, entitled "Hammer and Peach". I use the small-d formation advisedly, as the song would seem to have been recorded somewhere between the debut album and Waking Hours, in the same period as what we know as the "Waking Hours demos". Anyone (Darren?) with more info please share. I don't know whether the liner notes provide a specific recording date, as I downloaded the track individually from iTunes. The good news is, you can download the track individually from iTunes! http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/park-lane-archives/id337405806 The album also features songs by Texas, Primal Scream, The Bluebells (a nearly unlistenable demo of "Young at Heart" which mainly reveals how much work the song would require to become the pop gem it went on to be), and others. The disc is available on Amazon (as an import for US buyers). I already had this track on the bootleg comp called "Missing Links", but the officially released version not only sounds miles better, but is 11 seconds longer as well (I think because it runs slower than the boot). Makes me wonder how many other pristine dels demos reside in the Park Lane Archives! Peachily yours, Jeff Rosenberg ------------------------------ End of oppositeview-digest V11 #15 **********************************
