Jean and I made the trek from Tempe up to the PacNW to see Justin and meet some other OV'ers! What a fabulous treat all around. We arrived at the Jupiter Hotel (colocated with the Doug Fir Lounge) in the afternoon and guess who was checking in with us at the counter in the lobby? Mr. Currie himself. He related a short story of a trip to AZ when backstage at the Tostitos Block Party (1996? memory is short) the big news was that Bill Clinton's brother was there and how excited everyone was to meet him... After the show, JC and his girl friend drove to the Grand Canyon (about 5 hours from Tempe) only to arrive to the thickest fog he'd ever seen. He had to reassure his girl friend that the view really was fantastic! Before the show we met Darren Holmquist, Christine, Gregor, Ivy, Jeff, Sara, Ben, and some other long-time fans. We chatted and had a great dialog waiting over 2 hours before the show finally got started. After a technical hiccup with the equipment, Justin finally got started. Fortunately his annoyance with the delay was short lived. Also unfortunately, the show was pretty short lived too. They played just more than an hour or so. I think an eager fan requesting Nothing Ever Happens may have prematurely ended the show... Alas, it may have been at the venue's request to start winding down. If I had half a brain I'd give a set list, but it would likely be in error. He opened with What Is Love For, played a few things from the new album, took a few requests, when back to a prepared list for a couple, and then off before a (three?) songs as an encoure including As Long As I Don't Come Back. Darren and I toughed it out and drank guiness in the bar until the seats next to Justin freed up. We had a great conversation about the Dels, past, future, etc. until the bar kicked us out at 2 am. I'm completely thrilled we made the effort to come up to Portland and experience the whole day. It was truly awesome to finally meet some of you from the list in person. I can't wait until the next chance. FYI - though he had no specific plans, Justin seemed genuinely intent on wanting to keep writing, publishing, and performing. I think we'll get that chance. I'm afraid the synching leaves more than a little to be desired, but I don't know how I would go about improving that - at least you should get the idea. Hope it's not too annoying! http://rapidshare.de/files/39420061/justincurrie_acousticduo_tripledoor_20080514_pt1.MP4.html http://rapidshare.de/files/39420739/justincurrie_acousticduo_tripledoor_20080514_pt2.MP4.html http://rapidshare.de/files/39421080/justincurrie_acousticduo_tripledoor_20080514_pt3.MP4.html I note that although the show page on the synclive site itself just says "unavailable show", the box on Justin's MySpace page says that it's waiting for the artist to make it available, so perhaps it will ultimately become available again through that site after all...
