I was thinking exactly the same thing after seeing the nyc show; I was expecting the sour/self-centered/drunk that the web image has fostered these past few years and was most pleasantly suprised to find a sort of sweet sort of old-fashioned guy with a really pleasant and self-deprecating sense of humour, friendly and gracious to the audience, just about the complete opposite to the image. I'm seriously looking forward to receiving my copy of the CD from lala.com. Thanks Rachel. Oh, and thanks Justin! Interestingly Justin came on stage with a Del Amitri number and not one off the solo album. Did you notice how he hid behind his long hair for the the first couple of songs? He gauged quickly how much the audience were up for it and became more open. I don't know the exact track listing but it appeared to be about fifty fifty, new album and Del Amitri songs. I noticed that Ian Harvey, Andy Alston, Kris Dollimore and Mark Price all got some sort of credit on the new album. I know that this is a solo album by J.C., but with the setup last night of a drummer, base player ,lead guitar, and keyboards, with Justin on acoustic guitar and key boards, could there not have been a more Del Amitri orientated line up. The lead guitarist was full of energy and early on tried to upstage J.C. with his enthusiasm. He was excellent but lacked the experience and fertility of I.H. on the Del songs. (e.g. on the guitar solo in Here And Now.) Strange to see Justin do an entire show without him playing base once. The teddy-boy base player bid his job well, he did come over though as slightly disinterested and bored. (CHEER UP MAN!) The drummer was satisfactory but no Mark Price and Andy the keyboard player wasn't Andy. The highlight of the evening was how well the new songs came over live. 'Gold Dust' and 'If I Ever Loved You' in particular. J.C's attempt at 'The Verb To Do' was also appreciated by many. Justin's album was selling well after the gig. With all the mad J.C. and Del fans having bought the new album on the week of release, I was wondering what these people thought they were buying. Regards Robert. Amazing version of "Sleep Instead Of Teardrops", and love the new tracks one of which I can't remember, and the other the "Tonight I'm Gonna Hurt Everyone I Love" which is a bit of a stormer!!!! Also got me a nice T-Shirt with the "No, Surrender" lyrics plastered all over the front. Nice, especially for a tenner. You can't get T-Shirts these days for a tenner, should have got some more, if only to use for dusters.....Bargain!! Anyone else go?
