I do think we are a motivated and (myself excluded) fairly well informed about music and the biz that is music. It would be great to see that utilised in some way. But the general feeling is that Justin wants it the traditional way and as I have learned over recent days by those better acquainted with him, he is not starving and therefore maybe isn't as motivated as we would like. All the same, Rebound seems to be moving nearer and maybe we can look forward to a spurt in activity. Their first EP was self produced and released. They signed with a small indie label for their second album. After that, they were signed by Capital Records. Then, they got out of their contract (much like the Dels with Chysalis!), signed with a large indie label, then a medium sized indie label. They've put the band on hiatus for awhile. Chris Trapper (the Justin Currie of the Push Stars) has a new record out and is touring it a bit.. The fan network, would involve, putting up posters that were downloadable, or sent to the fan. Also, making requests to radio stations. Michelle Malone has the same deal going with her fans. Michelle was to play here several years ago. The management company sent me 50 posters, and 50 cd's to put out. Then, the venue she was booked to play, closed. We couldn't find another place for her to play on such short notice. So, it was just cancelled. Anyway, I ramble. I always thought, if Justin wanted to sell cd's, that the team here at OV could've moved a thousand or so units. But, if he's trying to get a recording contract, that would work against him, as, his fanbase would already have the album, and therefore wouldn't buy from the label. Anyway. David Gray was in a similar situation a few years ago. He had been on a label with some early success in the UK. After a few albums, the label started neglecting him and eventually dropped him. He recorded White Ladder on the cheap and self-released it in Ireland only. It did so well that EastWest (Atlantic) licensed it and re-released it all throughout the UK. Then as the record became huge in England, Dave Matthews signed Gray to a US deal on his ATO label. Then it became a big hit in the US. When I say he should self-release it, I don't mean just print up 1000 copies and sell them through his website. I mean he needs to press at least 10000 copies, find a distributor to get them in stores, do some marketing and advertising, get a song on the radio (Get To Me seems like an obvious single, even though it seems to be the only uptempo song on the album!) - in general just WORK the record. All that is gonna take time, money, and effort... which is why I don't think it'll happen. If he did the DIY route and then a label came calling they would likely re-jigger the album anyhow (add a few tracks, add a bonus CD/DVD, etc.) to make it appeal to those who already owned it.
