Chrissie was on the same plane up as I was (co-incidentally) so the fun started at Stansted. It was wonderful to meet up with so many new people too - people I've been chatting with on OV and the forum for donkeys' years but never met before. Especially pleased to finally meet Laura as we've been OV'ers for 10 years now and this is the first time we've met up. Hilary and Jackie were the only two others from our little group from the last two tours, and we kept up the tradition of being at the front of the queue and first in the venue so we could get our places in the front. Sadly I couldn't stand in my usual place because there was no Iain for me to stand in front of - but I suppose standing right in slap bang in front of Justin is not a bad position to be in. :-) I had great company in the front row - really nice to meet Steve and Jane (JEB on the forums) and like Steve said, my enjoyment was very much enhanced by their company. Cristina was over from Spain, and it was lovely to see Birgit too. I don't know if Mary (The Last to Know) and Leah (Abre La Boca) are on OV as well as the forum, but they came over from the US too. The gig was a sell out - I think the venue holds 1200 which isn't bad for someone who's not really played for several years! Must have been very encouraging for Justy. I really can't remember the whole set-list, but there was a fine mix of Delsongs and new material. Hilary provided a list of the Delsongs he played from the Manchester gig on Alison's forum. Justin was quite nervous playing to a home crowd and by all accounts the venue was about four times larger than the gigs he played earlier in the week. However he didn't need to be nervous because the crowd loved him. We were all singing along to the Delsongs and also to the tunes from MySpace. I loved the song Gold Dust - I did manage to catch some of it on my camera (accidentally actually, I pressed the wrong button) but the very nice security guy saw me and politely asked me not to. If it had been London I would have had the camera taken away and the memory wiped. I will see if I can get it on YouTube. I know there are some snippets already up there from Birmingham. The band are very competent. Jim McDermott (Kevin;s brother and UDS's Terrence) is on drums, I didn't really catch the names of the others, The bassist was good. The guitarist also played pedal steel. He was good but no Iain. A lot of the Delsongs sounded very different because he didn't try to copy Iain's riffs - just played his own thing - or the keyboardist played the solos. I'm An Unbeliever was one song where I particularly missed Iain and Kris playing off against each other at the end, and others like Here And Now started completely differently. I need to try to remember that it's not Del Amitri and move on - not to make comparisons. But it is hard when he plays their songs!! Buttons On Your Clothes, Be My Downfall and As Soon As The Tide Comes In were particularly good. Justin was in good voice - he did well with the high notes and lots of falsetto.During NEH Justin started singing the accordion part and soon everyone else was joining in. Andy Alston was in the audience - I wonder what he made of that! I'm hoping that Justin will be encouraged by the reception he got at all the gigs this week, realise how much he misses playing, and get off his arse and do more gigs. He may find he will be playing smaller venues than before - but by gigging he will pick up more fans and gather in old ones back into the fold. Justin didn't mention anything about having a recording contract - but the article Chris posted does seem to imply a release before the end of March (before the clocks change...). If he hasn't an official contract he would do well to release it himself - so many people do that these days - and sell the tracks on-line for download and have CD's for sale at future gigs. These days I feel a major record deal is more of a hindrance than a help. Based on that article, it seems he's quite content puttering around Glasgow, hanging out in the pub and writing a song whenever the mood strikes him. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 Jan 2007 20:57:08 -0000 From: "Steve Wilson" Subject: RE: OV: Glasgow I was steered towards The Push Stars by Radio Free Del Amitri and I seem to remember from their website that they had a network of fans who undertook some sort of role (can't remember what it was now and too busy/lazy to look it up now!). I'm sure they released their albums independently (or did I dream all this?) Nowadays it doesn't seem much more difficult than My Space. Get a chain going, pyramid selling, anything! Whether the label ever put much effort into it is another matter (much like Del Amitri and CYDMG). Their first EP was self produced and released. They signed with a small indie label for their second album. After that, they were signed by Capital Records. Then, they got out of their contract (much like the Dels with Chysalis!), signed with a large indie label, then a medium sized indie label. They've put the band on hiatus for awhile. Chris Trapper (the Justin Currie of the Push Stars) has a new record out and is touring it a bit.. The fan network, would involve, putting up posters that were downloadable, or sent to the fan. Also, making requests to radio stations. Michelle Malone has the same deal going with her fans. Michelle was to play here several years ago. The management company sent me 50 posters, and 50 cd's to put out. Then, the venue she was booked to play, closed. We couldn't find another place for her to play on such short notice. So, it was just cancelled. Anyway, I ramble. I always thought, if Justin wanted to sell cd's, that the team here at OV could've moved a thousand or so units. But, if he's trying to get a recording contract, that would work against him, as, his fanbase would already have the album, and therefore wouldn't buy from the label. Anyway.
