I'm listening to Beautiful Freak by Eels, discovered them listening to music from Scrubs (the Dels track featured didn't make it unfortunately) which always seems to feature music I love, but being from Blighty and the product of a sheltered upbringing, I have never heard before. 'Fresh Feeling' was the actual track featured, but The Shins 'New Slang' features too, and must be a favourite of Zach Braff cause he gives it a prominent plug in Garden State. I love it! Listening to Artic Monkeys, bit predicatable being the biggest thing snice walking upright caught on, but you gotta love 'em. Not sure how it would translate across the pond though. The Push Stars feature highly (thanks RFDA for the intoduction). Still hooked on James Blunt, just as it was starting to grind the teeth a little along comes the live album to save the day. Nice Crowded House cover was a bonus. Ben Folds old and new, Jack Johnson, The Revenants have all had regular spins. Looking forward to the new Snow Patrol album, been a long wait. OK, let me start by saying it doesn't compare to the original, but that being said I would love to hear Dels songs being covered just to get them out there. Songwriting that good doesn't belong in some dusty archive or the preserve of of a dwindling band of diehards. So I liked hearing it just to remind me to dig out my CH albums and give them a spin again. On the other hand I think James Blunt may be a rare talent, only time will tell. Oh, that is funny! I read this after the first post "praising" James Blunt. As much as it pains me, everyone really IS entitled to their own opinion! The argument I started on the Crowded House list was this...and it's probably stupid but it also applies to this list...and it is only MY opinion! Okay...I get a little grin on my face when I hear Don't Dream it's Over on the overhead in some store or whatever...even if I hear Something So Strong. Likewise with Del's Roll to Me or Kiss This Thing Goodbye. BUT if I heard Driving With the Brakes on or an obscure, not released as a single, song from the Dels, from CH, from anyone...hell, I'd probably freak out if I heard Terry Hall or Roddy Frame...yee-gads! Okay, I am getting carried away. But you get the gist. I guess basically I just hate my little gems (and yours) being put out there for people who don't appreciate it. Yes, I know, some will say if it is out there that maybe more fans will buy the music and become fans, but I think that some know how I feel. Please let me hear from you! Oh, and I just bought a bunch of CD's and finally got the Cardigans First Band on the Moon (it is ONLY ten years old???) and love it! I have Emmerdale and Life and didn't buy this one only because I thought it would be awful but I love it. I also bought Summerteeth by Wilco (huge fan) and I really like it, too. Their last two are great. Love Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. Okay...done for now! In the book the character was a terrible person who was having an affair with the husband of the main character (though obviously not so terrible as the husband). I am sure, though, that your fiance is a lovely wonderful person. So here is what I am listening to, and what I recommend: I bought the new Philosopher Kings album last Tuesday and although it is not that good it just reminded me that their previous album, released almost ten years ago, called Famous, Rich and Beautiful, is possibly the best musical effort of any band ever in the history of all time. I know that is a bold statement but I absolutely stand by it. And the song "Hurts to Love You" is of such musical perfection that if you listen to it it will change your life so profoudnly that you will instantly become a better person. I promise you. Another person I recommend, who is also featured very prominently on the Scrubs soundtrack, is Josh Radin. He does quiet reflective songs and while we are on the topic of covers his album also includes a cover of The Smiths song "Girlfriend in a Coma", which incidentally, was turned into a book by the Vancouver-based Douglas Coupland which I did not understand at all. If someone did, perhaps they could email me off-list and explain it? Really, I would like to know. Lastly, I am going to recommend a band I always recommend to everyone everywhere because they are lyrically brilliant and thought-provoking. They are called Ted Leo and the Pharmacists, and I particularly recommend his song Me and Mia, which is about eating disorders, and Shake the Sheets which (at the risk of stirring up further political controversy), prominently features the brilliant line, "I want to take it to the president, him and all his cabinet, with a broom". That's all for now, kids!
