I hope there aren't loads of people out there who feel like you that they can't jump in. Many of us have been here for 8 or 9 years now and a lot of us have met up at gigs - both in the US and the UK, and even if we've not met in the flesh, we've become good friends over the years. But you can never have enough Delfriends so we're always keen to meet new people. We don't bite - well not often (though we have had some spectacular fights over the years - but we always kiss and make up!) We've even had two inter-continental marriages between British and American OV'ers! Tours are generally great fun - we've had loads of people coming over from the US to stay with UK OV'ers for the last two tours here. Libby is particularly famous for her hospitality! We've even met up for gigs of other artists as many of us find that we share similar musical tastes across the board, and I've been introdced to some great bands by other OV'ers. So please everyone, don't be shy! Jane (Bracknell, England) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 21 Jan 2006 09:36:15 EST From: SensOfWndr@aol.com Subject: OV: new old fan Hello everyone, I've just joined the OV digest and the bulletin board at the site... I think I may have been a mostly lurking list member for a brief time in the late 90s... but once upon a time I was one of Del Amitri's very first fans in the US... back when their name started with a lowercase d!!! Someday soon I'll write up and post my whole "dels story" including early personal correspondence with the band, attending their very first American show in 1986, and other memorable adventures. I'd love to hear about any other memories or mementoes of those early days and especially that first scrappy US tour. This summer's the 20th anniversary! In the meantime, I come with the very good news that I'm in posession of what I believe to be a heretofore uncirculated tape from that period, of the original del Amitri foursome performing and chatting live on a Detroit radio station during that first "Whistle Stop Tour" of the States. I've already communicated with the redoubtable Darren about starting a CD tree of this material, which I'm simply del-ighted to share with other lovers of the band, especially those from way back when. The entire tape including conversation, some album tracks, and four songs performed live in the studio, lasts about 72 minutes, though the circulated copy should have the album tracks excised for copyright reasons, not to mention that they're readily available elsewhere in vastly superior sound quality! Speaking of sound quality, the tape is very clear but by no means pristine, and there are a few audible tape flubs, but it's one of those things that just makes you glad it even exists in whatever condition it is. We'll certainly do the best we can mastering it for broad consumption! I'm also really looking forward to getting to hear some other rare early material I've never heard in exchange, especially the tape of that US debut show at Maxwell's in Hoboken, which I only just learned existed and which will certainly bring back some lovely memories. Anyway, I'm going to work out the particulars of getting the tree started with Darren as soon as possible, but given yesterday's discussion of de-lurkers and new trees and the like, I just thought I'd introduce myself and share the good news about the existence of this exciting "new old" tape. As far as the "introducing myself" part, my name's Jeff Rosenberg and I'm a journalist and singer-songwriter and radio DJ, among other things, living in Portland, Oregon (where, shortly after I moved here several years ago, Darren once very kindly attended a gig of mine), born and raised in the Washington, DC area. Like I said, I'll write more soon regarding my personal tale of an innocent lad hopelessly corrupted by the helplessly romantic cynicism (or is that cynical romanticism) of a brilliant and terminally obscure debut album made, as it turned out, by kids barely older than I was at the time -- and ohh so much younger than we all are now! Cheers, Jeff ------------------------------ End of oppositeview-digest V8 #16 *********************************
