The president declared the gulf coast a disaster area one to one and a half days *prior* to Katrina even hitting land, for the express purpose of having all the country's resources (National Guard, FEMA, etc.) available to these states immediately following the disaster we all assumed was going to happen. Governor Blanco (of Louisiana) did not do this for three days, even though her citizens were dying, and she could/should have. Let's take a lesson from Guiliani's superior actions after 9/11. Again, a hurricane should *not* be a political issue in the first place, and it's very sad that this is what the media circus is turning it into. But if you all continue to need to point fingers, let's put the blame where blame is due. The governor of Louisiana and mayor of New Orleans dropped the ball big time here. First, when you declare a "mandatory" emergency, why are you then allowing people to stay? If you can have all these busses bussing people out AFTER the disaster, why weren't they there BEFORE the disaster to bus out people who were unable to leave and when the roads were still passable? To further delay the rescue, once the guard got there, they were getting shot at by snipers, who were New Orleans citizens. This governor should be completely ashamed of herself. Sorry Darren, but I am very tired of people from outside the US bashing our country when they know nothing about it and are obviously getting all their "facts" (ha-ha) from CNN and the NY Times. (This is my last post on this hurricane in deference to Darren only. If non-citizens are bashing the USA on this list day after day, it seems someone should be sticking up for it. Pretty poor showing for all you American citizens out there, no matter *who* our president is and whether you agree with him or not.) We tried to convice people not to vote for Bush; unfortunately there are a lot of misled people in the country at the moment. We do know that other countries have offered assistance, but unfortunately for us, Bush is a moron and does not know when to allow others to provide assistance. Some of us realize that the US is not the only country in the world and the world would be a much better place if the US government would lose some of its arrogance. This will entail providing a coordinated, comprehensive federal response to any large-scale crisis and mounting a swift and effective recovery effort." seems like there is plenty of blame to go around.......
