One of my friends from another list, whom some of you may have come across (certainly Susan and Lori), Mimi Heitzmann comes from Bay St Louis. Her children and their families had evacuated - but her 90 year old parents refused to leave, so she and her brother felt compelled to stay with them. Bay St Louis has been completely flattened and apparently there are bodies floating around everywhere and because of lack of power etc it is unlikely we'll hear from her for up to a month. It's terrible. We obviously won't hear from those on this list who live in the area - - but I hope they are all OK anyway. He was just on TV talking about his family who are also in Bay St. Louis. I think that's a very small place, so it is quite a coincidence that is where your friend is from also. His mom and grandma were trapped in the attic for two days. Apparently the house is gone, but they got out okay. His wife and kids are in Hattiesburg, Miss. and even 60 miles from the gulf, they are pretty much trapped because there is no food, electricity, generators, or gas, etc. He said one of the couple times he was able to get thru to her on the cell phone, she told him there were 50 people (neighbors and relatives who've fled the gulfcoast) living in their house and one loaf of bread was all that was left. He is so frustrated being up here and wanting to drive down there with supplies, but there is no getting through. It really does just keep getting worse with every time you turn on the news. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone there. I heard yesterday that people are using "Craig's List" (that's an online advertising/selling site for regional things) in the Lost and Found section to request info on loved ones they can't find. So sad. Have any other countries offered to lend a hand in this tragedy? I find it odd that the US is always "right there" when these things happen in other areas of the world (not that I always AGREE with that) and I have not seen anything on the news at least that indicates we've been extended a helping hand by anyone. There's so many people here in germany who seem to think: It's the USA this time, not some 3rd-world-country like India or so. THEY are the biggest and wealthiest nation in the world and want to be the world-police - so why do WE have to help THEM? It's sad, but so it is. Most of the germans don't understand that all those poor people without water, without food, without a house anymore, are not the USA or George Bush. They are just people in trouble and they need help from everywhere they can get some. But I beg you not to be upset with the germans who think this way. It's a fact that "Big brother" is supposed to get along on its own. Please don't be angry at these people and don't think: "OK, you didn't help us now, we won't help you next time". That wouldn't be right, either. You just have to be strong now in many ways. sincerely yours, Dirk ------------------------------ End of oppositeview-digest V7 #93 *********************************
