From: Rebecca Payne [mailto:rebeccajpayne@yahoo.co.uk] >Jane - I'm off to the Guilfest too, just for the >Saturday. Make sure you check out Tom Baxter, second >act on the main stage, he's wonderful. :) Hi Rebecca I enjoyed Tom Baxter's set but one or two of his songs were not quite to my taste. Great voice though! On the whole I wasn't impressed with Saturday's Guilfest as I found most of the acts we saw were quite "samey", and Paul Weller's set seemed to be mostly about promoting his new rather too laid back stuff than holding the interest of a festival crowd who were not necessarily big fans - there was a steady stream of people exiting half way through his set, before they all fell asleep. His set would have been fine in a concert venue but just wasn't right for a festival where eveyone wanted a rocking good Saturday night. The Black Velvets are tipped to be the next Big Thing - but to my ears, although they sounded rather the same as most of the bands that are around in the charts at the moment. However we shall have to wait and see. There were a few acts that I thought were pretty wonderful though. Jorane played on the Saturday. She is a Canadian cellist, and although I think she's supposed to be quite big in Canada I'd never heard of her before. Imagine Led Zep's Dazed and Confused played on the cello on a scorchingly hot Summer's afternoon and sung by an attractive young lady with a big instrument between her legs and a haunting voice. It worked for me anyway. Friday's festival for us started with Boo Herwadine - whom I enjoy. I agree with Libby - he's worth checking out. Fave act of the evening was Alabama 3 - - who wrote the theme tune for the Soprano's TV series. Fans of Eileen Rose will know of them as she has recorded with them and vice versa - and they have also performed in her live band too. The Pogues were headliners and we started to watch them but Shane McGowan is so embarrassing so we went to catch Hothouse Flowers and probably made a good choice there. Three of the highlights of the festival for me though were on the Sunday. One was an old 60's band which had us rocking and two played cover songs - but with a twist. The Zombies were fabulous - though Colin Blunstone's very black hair was a bit suspect. Rod Argent threw himself around the keyboards like a man forty years younger than he is. Great stuff. One of their hits was "God Gave Rock'n'Roll To You" and they finished their set with this - but we'd actually heard it already that afternoon by the previous act.... They played a very different version though, as they were the fabulous Ukelele Orchestra of Great Britain. I've seen them a few times already and can't sing their praises enough. Imagine seven people dressed in tuxedos and dicky bows (apart from the women), sitting down playing ukelele's. They plays a very vast range of music, ranging from the Beatles to Bowie to the Sex Pistols and The Clash to Ms Dynamite to The Good The Bad and The Ugly to Nirvana. There's nothing they won't attempt to play!! But it works and they put an amazing slant on things. They are indescribable - but if you get a chance please go and see them. http://www.ukuleleorchestra.com/ The other Sunday band I enjoyed was Hayseed Dixie. They have called themselves "A Hillbilly Tribute to AC/DC" - hence the name. They dress as hillbillies and speak like extras from The Beverley Hillbilllies - playing songs like Highway To Hell and The Ace of Spades on the fiddle, banjos and acousitc guitars in hillbilly style. They were up against festival headliners Status Quo - but once you've heard three or four Quo songs in a row you've heard the whole set - and as several friends have been raving about Hayseed Dixie we wandered over to the other stage to catch their set. They got even our Gameboy fanatic son and his friend to put down their handsets and dance around and were a fabulous way to end the festival. Their songs were about the four most important things in life - Liquour, cheating, killing and hell! You must see them! http://www.hayseed-dixie.com/index.html I also enjoyed Marillion - which had me chilling out and relaxing after a very stressful few weeks.
