Best gigs, best music, best frontman, I'll give you that Pop was a bad moment in their history, but nothing else! The Dels, on the other hand, I was way disappointed with CYDMG, but SOSP was the highlight. Only got to see them live twice, once in York and once in Hull. I was supposed to go to Manchester for the last tour but met my (then) new boyfriend's daughters that day and felt it would be rude to disappear. Never had any friends who liked the Dels so always went on my own. I do remember that the crowd were friendlier than at any other gig I'd been to at Hull - one girl let me know she thought the Devlins' drummer was eyeing me up, ha, ha! You haven't seen me so you wouldn't get the joke! Bought James Blunt after recommendations here but haven't had chance to listen to it yet. Imagine my surprise when I found my boyfriend saying how great You're Beautiful is - he's an Eminem/Snoop/Dre kind of guy! I showed him I'd bought the CD but didn't dare tell him who recommended it cause he thinks the Dels are strictly elevator music! PS Did I get this wrong, or did someone think they were from the UK? Perhaps the Irish wouldn't be too happy with that one... PPS Gosh that was certainly the longest post ever from me, thank your lucky stars I don't post often! ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 15 Jul 2005 12:44:06 +0100 (BST) From: Rebecca Payne Subject: OV: Re: oppositeview-digest V7 #83 Jane - I'm off to the Guilfest too, just for the Saturday. Make sure you check out Tom Baxter, second act on the main stage, he's wonderful. :) - - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jane Armstrong" To: Sent: Thursday, July 14, 2005 2:26 PM Subject: RE: OV: Recent live gigs? > Oh I'm so boring!!! I've got to echo the several posts about U2. I too had become disenchanted with the last few records, also thinking that with their elaborate live concert production they've come dangerously close to self-parody. Unfortunately, I haven't heard much from the latest album, however here in the states, Apple iPod has just about ruined "Vertigo" with incessantly annoying ads featuring that song. That said, I did enjoy their opening set at Live 8. Currently in my player are Tanita Tikaram - Sentimental (1st new album in 7 yrs), Swing Out Sister - Live in Tokyo and Where Our Love Grows, Ivy - In the Clear, Marc Broussard - Carencro, Dido - Live, and Genesis - Archives Volume 1. 1967-1975 Box Set which features two full cds of The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway live - dug this out due an amazing show I recently saw by tribute band The Musical Box which was an amazingly authentic re-creation of Genesis' Lamb tour 1974-75. I'm looking forward to a new cd from Texas, who I just heard were joined onstage last night in Glascow by Paul Buchanan of the Blue Nile who sang a duet with Sharleen - haven't seen/heard it yet, but I understand a webcast is available for a #5.00 fee. Recent live shows in addition to Swing Out Sister (which I already posted about) are Brian Auger's Oblivion Express, sounding as great as they ever did in the 70's, with two of his kids now in the group, the Trashcan Sinatras - how did I miss these guys for the last 10 yrs? - just got into them as a result of sister Eddi Reader's version of "Wild Mountainside," Mark Knopfler, Rebecca Martin (once of Once Blue), Holly Palmer sounding awesome with Mojo Mancini (a band of studio session pros led by John Leventhal), Hall & Oates in a WXPN live broadcast concert, Nellie McKay, Keren Ann, A Girl Called Eddy, Vance Gilbert, AWB & Tower of Power, both of whom also sounding as great as they ever did. I have been a fan of theirs since 1990's release of Cake. I was lucky enough to snag their latest Weightlifting with the bonus DVD which is awesome! It is also an autographed copy (friend in radio) so I cherish it. Personally, I love Cake and I think A Happy Pocket is one of my favorites. Although I've Seen Everything is quite solid as well. I have a CD of B-sides and covers, too, and I just think that Francis Reader can do anything! I have not been able to see them in concert, but the next time they are anywhere near here, I am going to suck it up and go! I wish they'd go to St. Louis or Kansas City, but unfortunately the closest they have been to me in recent years has been Chicago. Funny, they do not like Cake and do not like to play songs from it....I think it is a gem! If you do not have it, you should purchase a copy. There is also a Japanese import of Cake with bonus tracks which was released in 1999. Glad there's another TCS fan on here!
