I saw him support Aqualung at their Christmas gig in London last year and he was excellent. The two artists I can't seem to keep out of my CD player right now are Tom McRae and Tom Baxter. McRae has to be the best live performer I've ever seen. How he's not a superstar I will never understand. He's had 3 albums out and if anyone feels like checking him out I reccommend his self-titled debut album. If you like Nick Drake or Jeff Buckley then he's the man. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 13 Jul 2005 12:17:09 +0000 From: "Alia Husain" Subject: Re: OV: Recent live gigs? I saw Collective Soul in Atlantic City last month and it truly was a great gig. The band is really tight and knows how to perform and get into the emotion of a song. It was so good, I might actually take a four hour road trip to see them again later this month. I haven't done that in ages! Best find is also Ed Roland, Collective Soul's lead singer, who just released "From the Ground Up" acoustic versions of past and present songs including "Youth", "Perfect to Stay', "Counting the Days' & my new personal favorite ""Under Heavens Skies" --- truly sublime! I downloaded "From the Ground Up" off of iTunes. And 'Will' from Philly, if you're out there, feel free to send me your live musical picks from around the area if you have the time. I so enjoy your taste! Me? I would have de-lurked earlier, but I misplaced my cane and had to put in my teeth. ;) Thanks for starting this thread, Susan. So many great memories have been coming back these last few days. I started on OV in Spring '98, so I think that's about the same time as you. Anyway, I miss the old days of lots of posts and meeting other OVers at the few gigs we had the privilege of seeing. Not to mention the Chicago Dels Fest! That was a special weekend. I wish we could all be back at the Duke of Perth! I wonder what Justin and Iain would think if we all got together again for another Dels Fest? They'd probably think we were insane. It would be fun, though, wouldn't it? I'm glad so many are posting again. I hope we can keep this up a bit. It's been great hearing from my old friends, but it's also been great to see that OV is still attracting so many new members. I hope you all feel at home despite all this talk of the "old days." As for the other current thread - I second Darren's recommendation about Bonepony. I saw them here in Columbia, SC ten years ago when they opened for the Freddy Jones Band. I went out the next day and bought Stomp Revival and have been a fan ever since. I wish they'd come through here again! Anyway, check them out if you get the chance. On a final note, for those of you who collect compilations that feature Dels songs, I found a two-CD collection on Amazon.co.uk called Acoustic 80s that features Nothing Ever Happens. It was only released a few months ago. The CDs have a pretty good collection of great songs. I was hoping these would all be live acoustic versions of the original songs, but these are all originals. I don't know who came up with the title. Most of the songs aren't really acoustic, and a handful of the songs aren't from the 80s! Wow - that's the most I've posted in years! I am hoping not to go directly back into lurk mode - this has been fun. Hello to all my friends out there. I hope all of you are doing well. Even though we haven't spoken/written in a long time, I think about all of you quite often. I miss talking to you and hope we can start back up. I will try my best on this end. There are still quite a few that we haven't heard from yet. Come on - who's out there? My best to you all. We just had the extremely rare treat of seeing Swing Out Sister play here in Philadelphia at the Troc. The only other time I've been to that venue was in 1997 when Del Amitri played there. I've listened to this band for the past 18 years and never thought I'd ever seem them live - they've only been to the U.S. a couple of times and never before to Philadelphia. Three out of their last four albums were not even released in their home country (U.K.) or here in the U.S., only in Japan where they are huge. They've just released a new live cd, Live in Toyko, recently recorded, available through their website only. They seem to have found a way to persevere with their career even in the face of record company troubles not unlike those which have dogged the Dels. Creatively both in the studio and in performance they've never been better. The recent concert was a stunner. I could go on and on but I guess that's what blogs are for. Nice to have OV mail again, and a special hello to my old friends and acquaintances, especially those who haven't posted in the last few years. In a world that seems to have gone completely over the edge in the last five years, simple things like music and friends help hold things together...at least for me, anyway. Cindy, I promise your Sonny Landreth & Marcia Ball show will be great! Sonny and his bass player have been playing together since they were about 12, which speaks volumes for both their musicianship and their personalities. Most recent show: Last Sunday evenng, I attended an ampitheater show for the first time in several years. Generally, I prefer club shows, but a friend convinced me that we should go to this show. The Black Crowes opened for Tom Pety & The Heartbreakers at Verizon Ampitheatre, (formerly Sandstone Ampitheater), in Bonner Springs, Kansas, just west of Kansas City on I-70. I have attended many shows at this venue previously. Both bands were in top form. The Crowes have Mark Ford back on lead guitar, and their original drummer behind the kit. This was the third time I've seen them, and the first time as an opener. Chris was in very good shape vocally, and was as animated as ever. Tom Petty played about two and half hours, one hit after another, including the Traveling Wilbury's "Handle With Care.". Mike Campbell was superb as always, and the rest of the Heatbreakers were wonderful. Original bassist Ron Blair has returned to the band in the wake of Howie Epstein's passing. As always, Tom & Mike brought an absolutely embarrasing array of vintage guitars across the stage during the performance. Very cool amps too, all three guitarists were each using a pair of what I believe were Vox AC 50 or 100 heads with 215 cabinets. The sight of six of those tall amps along with Rons pair of SVTs was very iompressive, and sounded great, especially with their Rickenbacker guitars, as those really bring out the echoes of that Beatle-ish sound. When Tom returned for the encore, he said that he had just been informed that this show was the largest show ever held at the venue. He went on to say that he had had a wonderful time and considered it a priveledge to play for us. I took all of that to be good news, because this show was definitely not "cutting edge," and was really just a good old-fashioned guitar oriented rock and roll show with good singing and playing. Maybe things will be a bit more favorable in the near future for that kind of music. I've noticed that rock music seems to be making a bit of a comeback on the charts here in the US lately, with a few acts even making it to the top ten. It's been all rap and hip hop for so long on the charts, it's been like a bit of fresh air. I think most stateside OVer's will agree that the music scene in the UK seems to have remained much more focused on music that concerns itself with intelligent lyrics, inventive melody and harmony than what what's been going on in the US charts. New discovery: The Sub-Dudes, (thanks, Brock). More wonderful music from New Orleans. I was only slightly acquainted with this band, so their recent release "Miracle Mule," was a really pleasant surprise. Great songs, great melodies and hooks and wonderful harmonies, along with some nice guitar playing, too. Not pop, but wonderful stuff with a certain pop sensibility to it.
